The present dissertation develops a reflection on the functioning of language in a set of stories produced by Guimarães Rosa, from the perspective of a potential subversion of what is real. For this approach, we considered that the mode of expression of the tales under analysis transgresses and questions the logic of the real, to an extent that they establish new laws for the flow of activities in the narratives in question. The tales selected for analysis are “O burrinho pedrês” (The Brindled Donkey) from “Sagarana” (1946), “O Espelho” (The Mirror) from “Primeiras Estórias” (First Stories) (1962), and “Meu Tio o Iauaretê” (My Uncle, the Iauaretê) from “Estas Estórias” (These Stories) (1969). As a theoretical apparatus to enhance the reflection, we will discuss the classical theory about the fantastic, mainly proposed by Tzvetan Todorov (1970), and the considerations of David Roas in his study “The Threat of the Fantastic” (2014), in which he questions and problematizes Todorov’s propositions. In addition, to address the production of Rosa, we will consider Antonio Candido’s critique of super-regionalism in the works of Guimarães Rosa (1987).
