Spatiotemporal Composition of Pest Ant Species in the Residential Environments of Santa Isabel, Puerto RicoBrown, Preston Hunter 15 June 2009 (has links)
Few studies have evaluated the community dynamics of pest ant species in tropical urban environments. Pest ant community dynamics were examined within three Puerto Rican housing developments. Housing developments (one, four, and eight years old), representing different stages of urban succession were sampled to determine which species were present and the relative species abundance. Eight trips were made to Puerto Rico over a one-year period, and more than 1,000 samples were collected during each trip. The ants collected in each sample were counted and identified. A total of 25 different species were identified from the developments, with the major pest species being big-headed, rover, and red imported fire ants (RIFA). Fourteen different species were identified from the one-year-old site. However, RIFA and rover ants were the most abundant, accounting for >75% of ants collected. In the four-year-old site, 20 species were identified. However, three species (RIFA, big-headed, and destructive trailing ants) were dominant, accounting for >75% of ants collected. Sampling data from the eight-year-old site indicated that out of 21 species identified, four species were dominant (RIFA, crazy, and two species of big-headed ants) and accounted for >75% of the ants collected. The dominant species within each site were different, indicating that the pest ant community changed during the stages of succession. However, these dominant species did not specifically impact the distribution of other species within the same site. Spatial analysis indicated that the number of species coexisting within a site increased as the age of the development increased. / Master of Science in Life Sciences

The objective of this study is to investigate management succession in black–owned
family businesses in South Africa. The study was conducted in two Provinces,
namely Limpopo and the North–West. In the Limpopo province, the study was
conducted in the Vhembe District. The Vhembe district is consists of four
municipalities, i.e. Thulamela, Mutale, Musina and Makhado. In the North–West
province, the study was conducted in the Bojanala District. The Bojanala district has
three municipalities, namely Phokeng, Marikana and Tlhabane.
Family businesses are one of the driving forces behind economic growth in the
developed and developing countries. Their general lack of longevity is a cause for
concern. Their lack of longevity has mostly been attributed to poor succession
management processes which hinder the transfer of the family businesses from one
generation to the next generation. It is because of this concern that the research was
undertaken in order to provide possible suggestions that the family businesses can
adopt and implement in order to ensure a successful transfer of the family business
to the next generation family members.
The research was conducted by means of a literature and empirical study. The
purpose of the literature study was to attain in–dept knowledge of family businesses
and management succession. The literature study formed the basis of understanding
family businesses and the unique challenges facing such businesses.
The literature review has focused on issues such as: the definition of a family
business, unique characteristics of family businesses, the advantages and
disadvantages of family businesses, challenges to the continuity of family
businesses, the definition of succession and succession planning, the importance of
management succession, the nature of the succession process, the selection of a
successor, mentoring and preparing a successor as well as the complete transfer of
management to the successor. The empirical study indicated that successful management succession in family
businesses is hindered by a lack of or poor management succession planning, estate
and retirement planning, the selection of the successor, the prevention and
management of conflict as well as the establishment of family forums which enable
effective communication within the family business.
Therefore, an investigation of management succession in black–owned family
businesses was undertaken due to their lack of longevity as presented in findings
from the empirical study.
Practical recommendations were suggested to support the family and the business to

This research is an investigation into Succession planning initiatives in government
agencies in Botswana, a case of the Botswana National Archives and Records
Services. The Botswana National Archives and Records Services has been
experiencing a significant loss of employees over the years. When people leave the
organisation in most cases the vacant position will take too long to fill, especially for
those positions that require the technical qualification and experience in Archives and
Records Management. This state of affairs according to the researcher may be
addressed by implementing a succession planning strategy. Succession planning has
the potential to uplift government agencies in terms of increased productivity,
motivation, efficiency and retention of staff. Succession planning can help organisations
to invest more on developing their staff for future key positions to ensure business
continuity. It is important for organisations to have a strong pipeline so that key positions
are easily filled as they become vacant.
This study sought to establish if the Botswana National Archives and Records Services
has any initiatives on succession planning and how well the employees understand the
concept of succession planning. A questionnaire was designed and administered to the
staff of the National Archives. The findings from the study reveal that most of the
employees do not understand the concept of succession planning and the organisation
has no initiative on succession planning. These findings led to the conclusion that the
National Archives should include succession planning in its business strategy and teach

Does Size and Industry Affect CEO Performance? The Effect of CEO Succession Announcements on Firm ValueRamirez, Eduardo A 01 January 2016 (has links)
This study expands on previous research regarding the effect of CEO performance on firm value. An event study is conducted using a market model of CEO successions and daily returns in order to generate predicted returns. Two separate regressions are run using a 3 day and 5 day event window respectively. The results of the regressions are using to compare abnormal returns between industries and market capitalization. While some daily abnormal returns are statistically significant, cross-sectional analysis of CAR are for the most part not significant. Further study is needed in order to come to a stronger conclusion.

Transformations biogéochimiques et transfert du silicium dans la zone de transition fleuve-mer : le rôle des diatomées planctoniques.Roubeix, Vincent 21 November 2007 (has links)
Le silicium (Si) sous forme dissoute (DSi) est indispensable à la croissance des diatomées, (microalgues) qui sont un élément clé des réseaux trophiques aquatiques terrestres et océaniques et qui jouent un rôle majeur dans le cycle global du carbone.
La construction d’un modèle global du cycle de Si le long du continuum aquatique continent-océan a permis de mettre en évidence l’importance de la zone de transition fleuve-mer pour le transfert du silicium continental vers les océans. Ce transfert est influencé par les diatomées planctoniques qui fixent le DSi et, en sédimentant, retiennent une partie du silicium continental dans les sédiments des estuaires.
Les modifications des flux de Si continentaux par les diatomées planctoniques dans les estuaires ont été clarifiées par :
1) des expériences sur l’écophysiologie d’une diatomée d’eau douce euryhaline (Cyclotella meneghiniana) particulièrement peu affectée par l’augmentation de salinité subi par le plancton lors de son transport des fleuves à la mer,
2) l’étude de la dissolution de la silice biogénique (bSiO2) qui constitue la coque externe des diatomées, et notamment l’effet de la salinité et des bactéries sur ce processus de recyclage du DSi,
3) la reconstitution du mélange des eaux et des diatomées dans un estuaire par l’expérimentation (3 espèces de diatomées dans un gradient salin artificiel) et par la construction et l’utilisation d’un modèle de Si dans la zone de mélange estuarienne.
Les résultats soulignent notamment l’importance des variations de salinité, de la turbidité de l’eau, de la nature des diatomées de rivière (sténohalines versus euryhalines) et de la viabilité des cellules sur les transformations et la rétention du silicium dans la zone de transition fleuve-mer.
