Development of a climate-based forage growth model for a Peace River community pasture

Wallis, Charles Hubert January 1981 (has links)
Based on periodic clipping of a fertilized pasture plot in the Peace River region in 1977 and 1979, accumulated dry matter production of a timothy, red fescue and alsike clover mix was found to be linearly related to accumulated transpiration during the active growing season, with a growth/transpiration ratio of 0.026 t ha⁻¹ /(mm H₂O)-The effect of fertilizer level and cutting management on dry matter production is discussed. Energy balance/Bowen ratio measurements of evapo-transpiration (E) in 1977, 1978 and 1979 showed that daytime E can be calculated for energy limiting conditions using the Priestley-Taylor formula with α = 1.26 ± 0.05. Daytime net radiation required in this formula was estimated to within 15%, using the Idso-Jackson longwave radiation equation and daily solar radiation data from a regional climate station 50 km away. During water supply limiting conditions E was found to be linearly related to root zone water storage. Root zone drainage was found to be negligible in this soil, which has a high bulk density subsoil. A simple model for calculating the course of pasture growth during the growing season at Sunset Prairie Community Pasture is described. The model is composed of a single-layer root zone water balance submodel and a relationship between dry matter production and transpiration. The water balance submodel estimates daily transpiration and requires daily values of rainfall, solar radiation and maximum and minimum air temperature. It also requires crop albedo and an estimate of the initial root zone water storage. Estimates of root zone water storage during the three growing seasons agreed well with gravimetric and neutron moisture probe measurements. The model, using the above growth/transpiration ratio, was found to estimate hay growth during the droughty growing season in 1978 to within 15% of measured values. An effective growth/transpiration ratio of 0.013 t ha ⁻¹/mm was required to account for the growth of pasture subjected to a simulated monthly grazing rotation. / Land and Food Systems, Faculty of / Graduate

Sunset magazine : in search of a house for western living / In search of a house for western living

Gonzalez, Robert Alexander January 1993 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1993. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 125-126). / This thesis inquires into Sunset's activity as a home magazine in the 1930s and 1940s. In viewing this period, this study draws from Sunset's entire history: from its inception in 1898 as a travel brochure for Southern Pacific Railroad, through a period as a literary magazine, through the late 1940s when it was already recognized as a leading western home magazine. In the 50th Anniversary issue, the editors reflected on the magazine's accomplishments and concluded that Sunset had been a "constructive and helpful influence in the development of Western homes and Western home life." This thesis investigates the extent of Sunset's interaction within this development. Three separate enterprises that reveal the magazine's attempt to define domesticity for the 'westerner' will be outlined in this thesis. First, spanning Sunset's first fifty years, a construction of a concept called Western Living is revealed by following the development of the magazine's departments and subtitles. Second, focusing on a period that begins with the Great Depression and ends with the postwar migration to the suburbs, Sunset's involvement in a search for the appropriate 'western' home unfolds through a study of a series of articles. This endeavor deemed the Ranch Style house as the 'western' house, and with that, the magazine's Western Living construct was completed. Finally, a study of Sunset's exploration of the 'backyard' and the relationship between the house and the constrained and ubiquitous lot ends this investigation. The author of this thesis presents the first comprehensive study of Sunset's mode of operation as a home magazine. It is the intent that this inquiry will initiate a discussion regarding the role of the popular home magazine as an operative variant of architectural discourse. / by Robert Alexander Gonzalez. / M.S.

Human Response to Environmental Hazards: Sunset Crater as a Case Study

May, Elizabeth Marie January 2008 (has links)
Natural disasters and rapid environmental changes have resulted in a continuum of responses by human societies throughout history. A model is proposed that incorporates cultural and environmental aspects of human response to natural disasters. The 11th century eruption of Sunset Crater volcano in northern Arizona is used as a case study in which the archaeological record and dendrochronological and geomorphological evidence are combined to characterize the nature of the human response. The model predicts that the population at Sunset Crater would have been pressured to move, or to move and make cultural or technological adaptations following the eruption. The model has utility in diverse conditions and can be used to interpret archaeological remains and facilitate modern disaster response.

500 feet of Sunset

Sridhar, Vidusha 15 September 2020 (has links)
The Sunset is a natural phenomenon that occurs every single day. Arguably, the sunset is one of the most romanticized natural event in all forms of art. In this wider context, the hypothesis posits architecture as an instrument to amplify specific visible aspects of the setting sun. The guidance for development relies on deconstructing and intensifying a specific spatial condition that interacts with effect the rays of the evening sun. Set in focus are three particular elements of the sunset, color, light, view and the subsequent darkness. In this architectural array, the chosen aspects of sunset are awarded a specific presence in their dedicated spaces. The spaces presenting those specific aspects of the sunset are organized as a sequence in the architectural construct of a long tunnel-like pathway. A culminating moment of totality emerges after the encounter of the specific aspects. / Master of Architecture / The Sunset is a natural phenomenon that occurs every single day. Estimativa de ingestão do corante artificial amarelo crepúsculo e quantificação em alimentos consumidos pela população brasileira

Feitosa, Luana Carolina Alves January 2016 (has links)
To evaluate the possible effects that artificial dyes can cause health is very important to have data on exposure to these substances. The fact that several studies suggest health problems related to the consumption of artificial dye Sunset Yellow (SY) justifies the need to verify that the ingestion of this substance through consumption of processed foods, exceeds the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI). The aim of this study was to evaluate and characterize the SY intake by the Brazilian population. For this, they were first checked which foods marketed by one of the country's largest supermarket chains containing SY in its formulation. the average intake of these foods using the Household Budget Surveys were evaluated (HBS 2008-2009) and determined the Theory Maximum Daily Intake (TMDI) SY, through the values set by the Brazilian legislation for the maximum permitted concentration of the dye in the different groups of food. Later analyzes were performed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to evaluate the Yellow Twilight content in powdered drinks, soft drinks, isotonic drinks, gelatins and candy, and check the use of bands of this dye and the adequacy of legislation current. Through the data, it was found that the TMDI for SY, considering the average per capita consumption of food does not exceed the ADI for any of the studied population distributions. However, when considering the prevalence of food consumption, the TMDI is higher than the ADI for adolescents 10-18 years (277% of ADI), adults (181% of ADI) and the elderly (140% ADI) in urban areas and rural and in five regions of the country. Regarding the samples, it can be seen that, considering the averages, the products that contain SY are in order: Soft drinks (7.91 mg/100 mL); Isotonic drinks (6.22 mg/100 mL); powdered drinks (5.96 mg/100 mL); Gelatins (5.92 mg/100 mL) and candy (below 1,25 mg/100 g) Through this work, it is concluded that considering the average consumption per capita daily intake is between 14 and 31% of ADI and do not represent a health risk. However, it was found that some individuals of all population groups may be ingesting the dye in amounts greater than those recommended. It should be noted that the HBS (2008-2009), used as a data source in this research, interviewed children from 10 years old. Since in this study the use of SY increased by reducing the age, it is likely that this trend will apply to children under 10 years. Given the above, it is necessary a greater rigor in applying and monitoring the use of Sunset Yellow in food products, as the high consumption of this dye can cause adverse reactions to their consumers.

Noble souls

Heineman, Margaret Mae 01 May 2015 (has links)
Sunset Iridescence is a one of a kind sculptural bookwork which reflects the essence of the wings of the Madagascar Sunset Moth. My work is very much about the physical qualities of the materials I use. The papers, inks and gilding supplies used to recreate the colors and iridescence of the moth are described. A comparison of color created by pigment and color created by the refraction of light rays is discussed. Parallels are drawn between the structure of the codex and the behavioral patterns of the moths. The local name for the Madagascar Sunset Moth is Lolonandriana - lolo for `spirit or soul,' andriana for `noble.' I was inspired by this concept of the soul to publish a letterpress printed chapbook. Unlike Flying in an Airplane is a short memoir of one of my experiences as a flight nurse. It recalls the first moments of lifting off in a helicopter as I prepared to stabilize and transport a critically ill child.
