Factors of trust and trust deterioration in supplier-buyer relationships : A view of the German automotive and aerospace industry

Hemberger, Torben Michael, Hildebrandt, Torben January 2017 (has links)
Trust is an integral part in a supplier-buyer relationship. Especially in highly technological industries like the automotive- and aerospace industry this topic is of great importance. However, in contrast to the factors affecting the trust building process, which are researched very well, trust deterioration, its indicators, and counteractions to prevent trust deterioration were overlooked so far. The purpose of this study is to categorize different factors for trust as well as to contribute knowledge to trust deterioration by finding indicators and counteractions to prevent this. The study is partly based on the model of perceived trustworthiness and its three dimensions by Mayer, Davis and Schoorman (1995). One aim of this thesis is to proof if all three dimensions still fit within both industries. Furthermore, a deductive research approach was used in order to research the suppliers’ perspective in both industries regarding trust and indicators as well as counteractions of trust deterioration. Our findings show that the dimensions’ ability and integrity from Mayer, Davis and Schoorman (1995) are still important to build trust. Furthermore, the study contributes to the not existing research by exploring several indicators of trust deterioration as well as highlighting three counteractions to prevent trust deterioration. Consequently, a trust deterioration framework is given to show the general connection between trust and indicators as well as counteraction of trust deterioration.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcio Venancio Da Silva.pdf: 1612176 bytes, checksum: f4a65a67c6e926bca48180e5eff07fe1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-29 / Due to the globalization, the numbers of international companies are in continuous expansion, along with logistics service providers which offer abilities to deal with relevant complexities to international trade. Freight Forwarders are considered the main international trade intermediaries. They are responsible for all functions involved in transport after the cargo is available. Therefore, selecting a freight forwarder and the criteria considered in this selection are important elements in the success of a company. This work’s purpose is to identify and classify the utilization degree of the criteria considered in international transport selection process of less than a container load (LCL), maritime modal, from the perspective of the Brazilian freight forwarders. After the literature review, 52 sub-criteria were identified, which were analyzed and organized into 13 criteria. The study was conducted with 6 freight forwarders, 2 small-sized, 2 medium-sized and 2 large-sized. This research concludes that the utilization degree of the criteria considered in the international transport of LCL, maritime modal, is influenced by the size of the companies studied. The price is the most widely used criterion for small-sized freight forwarders while delivery is the most widely used criterion for medium-sized and large-sized freight forwarders. This research concludes further that the environmental criterion is not used by importers and exporters in the selection process a freight forwarder.

Firm Environmental and Social Sustainability in Supply Chains

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Firms have increasingly taken on the commitment to sustainability due to environmental and social concerns. Environmental and social sustainability can create firm value and social welfare through cost reduction and revenue growth. While indicating a desire to do more, firms face challenges while engaging with stakeholders in their supply chains – suppliers and consumers. Suppliers are key partners to achieve cost reduction while customers can be the driver for revenue growth. If firms do not overcome the challenges properly, such a win-win situation of both firms and their supply chain stakeholders may not exist. This dissertation aims to understand and suggest ways to overcome the challenges which firms and their supply chain stakeholders face while collaboratively pursuing sustainability. In the first essay, I investigate the financial impact of a buyer-initiated supplier-focused sustainability improvement program on suppliers’ profitability. The results indicate that a supplier sustainability program may lead to short-term financial loss but long-term financial gain for suppliers, and this effect is contingent on supplier slack resources. The second essay of this dissertation focuses on the consumers and investigates their reactions to two types of firm environmental sustainability claims – sustainable production versus sustainable consumption. The results indicate that firm sustainable consumption claims increase consumers’ purchase, thus leads to larger firm sales, whereas firm sustainable production claims decrease consumers’ buying intention, then result in smaller firm sales. Therefore, I show that, contrary to extant belief, firm environmental sustainability can decrease consumers’ intention to buy. Finally, a firm may be impacted when some of its upstream or downstream stakeholders, or its own operations, are impacted by a natural disaster, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. In the third essay I study the joint effect of market attention and donation timing on firm stock returns based on the experiences of firms who donated to the 2017 Hurricane Harvey. I conclude that neither the first donors nor the followers can mitigate the negative stock returns due to disasters. However, firms who match their donation timing with market attention experience less negative stock market returns compared to other counterparts. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2020

Strategies for Reducing Supplier Risk: Inputs into the Supply Chain

Greene, Christopher A 23 March 2016 (has links)
There are many aspects to consider when managing an entire supply chain from procurement to fulfillment. Complex assemblies require hundreds of components, sourced from all corners of the globe, to come together in a synchronized fashion. Given the magnitude of the supply chain, high quality standards, and significantly increased outsourcing, there is a strong need to monitor supplier risk and quickly identify and mitigate potential problems. Moreover, the continuous pressure to reduce resources and pressure to cut costs, further increases the need for the development of procedures and tools that can quickly and efficiently address these potential supply chain risks. This thesis focuses on two unique problems brought to our attention by supply chain managers in the field. The first is the analysis of the robustness of advanced ordering strategies (AOS). AOS have been proposed in previous research to coordinate the delivery of components for complex assemblies with long and highly variable lead times. They have been shown to be highly successful to synchronize the supply chain under on-going conditions. It is not clear; however, their effect as the underlying performance of suppliers evolves over time. The second topic covers the methodological foundation and development of a tool to accurately classify suppliers based off risk, and provides a method to calculate final assembly risk, in addition to guiding the deployment of scarce supplier development teams and resources.
