Previous issue date: 2012 / Resumo: A otimização do desempenho das cadeias de ofertas é um processo importante para promover o desenvolvimento sustentável, uma vez que as atividades de produção e seus fluxos de distribuição de produtos estão intimamente ligadas às mudanças ambientais. Neste contexto, o conceito gestão sustentável da cadeia de oferta é entendido como a gestão dos serviços, produtos e matérias-primas ao longo da cadeia com melhorias para os objetivos ambientais e sociais. Este estudo analisa a cadeia de oferta de biomassa florestal com a finalidade de propor uma estratégia de avaliação de desempenho. A Suécia foi usada como área de pesquisa e forneceu informação para a construção da estratégia para a avaliação do conceito de sustentabilidade no desempenho da cadeia de oferta. É importante abordar que este estudo é o resultado da parceria entre Brasil e Suécia representados pela UNICAMP, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, e KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, dentro do Programa de Cooperação Externa Erasmus Mundus entre a União Européia e Brasil / Abstract: The performance optimization of supply chains is an important process to promote sustainable development, since production activities and products distributions flows are closely linked to environmental changes. In this context, the sustainable supply chain management concept is understood as the management of services, products and raw materials along the chain with improvements to the environmental and social goals. This study analyzes the forest-based biomass supply chains with the purpose of proposing a performance assessment strategy. Sweden provided a framework that was used to design a strategy to guide supply chain performance evaluation. M.Cur. / This study addressed the shortage of qualified nursing staff by means of an empirical research questionnaire according to the principles of the Delphi method. The study has as its objective the design of a marketing strategy for a nursing college, and also determines the contribution of marketing staff and formulates guidelines for a marketing programme and the implementation of a marketing strategy. The research consisted of three phases, being a literature survey and analysis of existing marketing models for service careers; the use of the Delphi method In three rounds, as well as critical Interviews with members Included In the sample to verify results; and the final validation with a marketing consultant and three respondents who are experienced marketing staff members. Marketing was regarded as a total system of Interactional activities, and the potential contribution of all involved persons was addressed in compiling a strategic marketing formula. A possible framework for a marketing strategy was determined with specific emphasis on the elements of such a formula, namely marketing staff, target market, products, price, promotional activities, venue and marketing research. It became clear from the research results that a marketing strategy and the guidelines for implementing such a strategy could enable marketing staff to enhance the Image of this career in an organised and planned manner, thereby contributing to the recruitment of nursing students who could resolve the shortage of qualified nursing staff.

Reflections of South African nurses migrating to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia a framework for supportTelford-Smith, Colette January 2006 (has links)
The last decade has seen an exodus of South African nurses migrating to "greener pastures". As a result of this migration, the South African Healthcare Service has been drained of one of its most essential resources – nurses. Subsequently, the crippling flight of nurses has thrown the nursing profession into a state of crisis. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the more popular destinations for South African nurses, the main reason being the attractive financial rewards. One agency reports that they send an average of thirty nurses a month to various hospitals within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country. Due to the uniqueness of the enforcement of the Islamic faith and the Saudi culture, many restrictions are imposed, particularly on women. The challenges and problems facing the South African nurses were, therefore, unique compared to elsewhere in the world. This research study had a primary and a secondary objective: The primary objective of this study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of South African nurses related to living and working in Saudi Arabia; The secondary objective of this study was to develop orientation guidelines to support South African nurses working and living in Saudi Arabia. The researcher utilized a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design based on a phenomenological approach to inquiry, in an attempt to answer the question: "What are the professional and personal experiences of the South African registered nurses working and living in Saudi Arabia?" Eleven registered nurses were selected to participate by means of purposive sampling. These nurses had been living in Saudi Arabia between three and six months. Consent was obtained from participants and the ethics committee of both the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. The central theme emanating from the study was recognized as being 'Cultural Diversity'. The sub-themes identified related to the registered nurses’: - Religious/spiritual adaptation - Environmental adaptation - Emotional/psychological adaptation - Professional adaptation Based on the identified themes, guidelines were formulated to assist South African registered nurses when migrating to Saudi Arabia. Utilization of these should assist the South African registered nurse in assimilating into both the cultural and working environment. However, in reality, the outcome showed that no one can be prepared fully for what awaits them in Saudi Arabia.

To investigate and evaluate the implementation of the supply chain management in service delivery with specific focus on procurement processes of goods and services in the head office of the Eastern Cape department of healthMnguni, Nombuyiselo January 2012 (has links)
Supply Chain Management is a well recognized managerial tool and government initiative, primarily aimed at improving all the aspects of the procurement activities in government organizations or any type of the sector. It focuses on meeting the needs of the service providers as well as of the customers. In 1994, South African Government came up with new initiatives to manage its budget and finance resources to meet the needs of the people. One of the new initiatives that the new Government introduced was the Supply Chain Management (SCM). The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act No.108 of 1996, as amended regulates procurement through Section 217. The statutes states that “217(1) when an Organ of State in the national, provincial or local sphere of government, or any institution identified in national legislation, contracts for goods or services, it must do so in accordance with a system which is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective The procurement reform processes were supported by the introduction of a number of legislative measures, including the adoption of the Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) and the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act (PPPFA). Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) is a financial act that was developed in 1999 to reform the public financial management of South Africa. The Act promotes the objective of good financial management in order to maximise delivery through the efficient and effective use of limited resources. Public Financial Management Act (PFMA) emphasizes on efficiency, transparency and economic utilization of public funds. The Treasury Regulations 16.5.3 states that, ‘when procuring goods and services, the procurement procedures must be in accordance with a system that is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective. Even though government departments have started implementing the Supply Chain Management strategies, there are still some challenges and deficiencies that hinder appropriate implementation. There are some deficiencies in tender award systems, ineffectiveness of SCM training materials, lack of communication between management and SCM or implementing staff as a result the implementing staff is not aware of the organization’s goals regarding supply chain management activities. Lack of monitoring, evaluation and reporting is also another challenge. Due to these challenges, the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health had incurred some expenses in trying to address these yet the Supply Chain Management has little impact in improving the service delivery. The key research objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the implementation of Supply Chain Management in service delivery with specific focus in procurement processes of goods and services in Head Office of Eastern Cape Department of Health. The study intends to establish and highlight the challenges that the Head Office of the Eastern Cape Department of Health is presently faced with in regard to implementation of the Supply Chain Management and the impact it has in service delivery. Data gathering techniques which include interviews and questionnaires had been used. The objectives, methodology and results of the study are presented. The conclusions and recommendations had been made with the basis that they will assist the department in improving the implementation of the Supply Chain Management which will have a positive impact in the service delivery. Further steps needs to be taken by the Provincial Treasuries in assisting department to improve in the implementation of the Supply Chain Management. Further research conduct is recommended for all the institutions of the department of Health as this study was focusing on Head Office only.

Implications of physician manpower planning in Canada for the family physicians of British ColumbiaVarley, John Charles January 1980 (has links)
The work content and style of practice of family physicians in British Columbia has been evolving since the second world war. Since the late sixties, a reassessment of the role of family physicians has been underway, both in Canada and the United States. Primary health care has recently been given greater recognition in North America. The development of family practitioners’ tasks in the last twenty years is reviewed from the point of view of a practitioner.
In Canada, the health care system has been changing since the forties, as a result of a series of federal-provincial agreements. It had become apparent that, despite constitutional deeding of health care to the provinces, federal incentives and funding were required to develop an appropriate nationwide system of health care. What was a joint private enterprise and local community sponsored health care system in the thirties, has now become a complex government-funded operation. Government involvement in third party payment schemes, for doctors particularly (the last of a series of national health insurance programs), has changed the relationship of doctors to their patients, because both became subject to the new rules of the
Medical Care Act of 1967.
Government involvement in payment for services has led to questions about accountability for spending. Subsequently, this led to the need for better planning, especially health manpower planning, which began to be considered very important in the early sixties. At that time, the Royal Commission on Health Services examined the prospects of bringing physicians’ services and allied health manpower services to all Canadians.
The attempts to plan physician manpower in Canada and British Columbia in the sixties and seventies are considered and criticized. M.Cur. / A staffing programme does not exist in a private hospital that compiles with the criteria cost effectiveness and quality nursing care. For this reason a study was undertaken to develop a staffing programme that would facilitate cost-effectiveness as well as quality nursing care. The nursing managers' role is not only to maintain cost-effectiveness but also to facilitate wholeness in patients and nursing staff. To achieve wholeness an exploratory. descriptive instrumental study was conducted and the Nursing Theory of Wholeness was used as a foundation for this study. Various research techniques were used such as scheduled observation, a structured questionnaire, nursing audit and a semi structured interviewing technique to quantify results. An analysis was conducted retrospectively to verify the statistical significance of a cost effective staffing programme. A staffing programme was designed consisting of seven steps to provide a basis for validity and reliability of the programme. The staffing programme proved to be cost-effective and proved to be statistically significant and shows a significant difference on a I% significance level (p = <0,003). The most important conclusion made is that valid, reliable staffing programme was designed for a nursing service in the private hospital. The staffing programme proved to be easily comprehended, useful, and relevant to its purpose. Cost-effectiveness was proved. A patient questionnaire was implemented to test the construct quality nursing. Partial validity of the construct quality nursing was confirmed.

Ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes : A study on farming and farmers in South Africa and SwedenMalinga, Rebecka January 2016 (has links)
Humanity is facing challenges of sustainably producing enough food for a growing population without further eroding the world’s ecosystems. Transformation of natural habitats into agriculture has resulted in opportunities for civilization, but has also led to land degradation and loss of biodiversity, threatening the generation of ecosystem services. A better understanding of interlinkages and trade-offs among ecosystem services, and the spatial scales at which services are generated, used and interact, is needed in order to successfully inform land use policies. This includes the need to develop transdisciplinary tools that can disentangle the relationships between the supply of and demand for ecosystem services. This thesis investigates agricultural landscapes as complex social-ecological systems, and uses a multi-method approach to assess ecosystem service generation from different types of agricultural landscapes and to examine the social-ecological nature of these services. More specifically, the thesis discusses the importance of appropriate spatial scales, explores landscape change, integrates stakeholder knowledge and develops tools to investigate supply and demand of multiple ecosystem services. Paper I reviews the literature on ecosystem service mapping, revealing that services were mostly mapped at intermediate spatial scales (municipality and province), and rarely at local scales (farm/village). Although most of the reviewed studies used a resolution of 1 hectare or less, more case-specific local scale mapping is required to unravel the fine-scale dynamics of ecosystem service generation that are needed to inform landscape planning. To explore future uncertainties and identify relevant ecosystem services in a study area, paper II builds alternative scenarios using participatory scenario planning in the Upper Thukela region, South Africa. The paper compares methods to select services for an ecosystem service assessment showing that scenario planning added limited value for identifying ecosystem services, although it improved knowledge of the study area and availed useful discussions with stakeholders. Papers III and IV combines social and biophysical data to study the supply and demand of ecosystem services at farm- and landscape level, through participatory mapping and expert assessments in the Upper Thukela region, South Africa (paper III), and through in-depth interviews and biophysical surveys in Uppsala County, Sweden (paper IV), including small-scale and large-scale farmers. Both papers find apparent differences between the farmer groups in terms of the supply and the demand of services, and also the capacity of the farmers to influence the generation of services (paper III). Paper IV further establishes the importance of using multiple indicators combining social and biophysical data to quantify and investigate the complex social-ecological nature of ecosystem services. A cross-case comparison of ecosystem service bundles, using data from papers III and IV, finds similarities in bundles generated in the large-scale systems, while the small-scale agriculture bundles varied. This thesis provides new insights into the social-ecological generation of ecosystem services at fine scales such as farm and landscape levels, and shows the importance of including the knowledge of various stakeholders, combining different methods and tools to increase the understanding of supply and demand of ecosystem services. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: Manuscript.</p>

Cette thèse est consacrée à l'étude de la formation des prix sur les marchés financiers, en particulier lorsque ceux-ci se composent d'un grand nombre d'agents. On commence par l'étude empirique d'un marché émergent -- le bitcoin -- de manière à mieux comprendre comment les actions individuelles affectent les prix -- ce que l'on appelle « l'impact de marché ». On développe ensuite un modèle théorique d'impact basé sur le concept d'agent hétérogène, qui parvient à reproduire les observations empiriques d'un impact concave dans un marché non manipulable. Le cadre de l'agent hétérogène nous permet de revisiter les concepts d'offre et de demande dans un cadre dynamique, de mieux comprendre l'impact du mécanisme de marché sur la liquidité, ou encore de poser les bases d'un simulateur de marché réaliste. On montre enfin, à travers l'étude empirique de plusieurs bulles et crashs sur le marché du bitcoin, le rôle crucial de la micro-structure dans la compréhension des phénomènes extrêmes. / This thesis is devoted to the study of price formation on financial markets, in particular when these are composed of a large number of agents. We start by the empirical study of an emergent market -- the bitcoin -- in order to better understand how individual actions impact prices -- a phenomenon known as « market impact ». We then develop a theoretical model based on the concept of heterogeneous agents, that allows to reproduce the empirical observations of a concave impact in a market that remains non-manipulable. The heterogeneous agents framework allows us to revisit the concepts of supply and demand in a dynamic context, to better understand how the choice of a particular market mechanism can impact liquidity, and to lay some grounds for a realistic market simulator. By studying several bubbles and crashes that happened on the bitcoin market, we finally show how relevant microstructure effects can be, in particular for understanding the occurrence of extreme phenomena.
