The effect of saccades on visual sensitivity and time perception

Considerable evidence indicates that visual sensitivity is reduced during saccadic eye movement. A central question has been whether saccadic suppression results from a non-visual central signal, or whether the obligate image motion that accompanies saccades is itself sufficient to mask vision. In the first of a series of experiments described here, the visual and non-visual effects of saccades were distinguished by measuring contrast sensitivity to luminance modulated low spatial frequency gratings, at 17 cd·m¯² and 0.17 cd·m¯², in saccade conditions and in conditions in which saccade-like image motion was produced by the rotation of a mirror but when observers’ eyes were kept still. The time course of suppression was examined by making measurements from well before image motion began until well after it had ended. A tenfold decrease in contrast sensitivity was found for luminance-modulated gratings with saccades, but little suppression was found with simulated saccades. Adding high contrast noise to the visual display increased the magnitude and the duration of the suppression during simulated saccades but had little effect on suppression produced by real saccades. At lower luminance, suppression was found to be reduced, and its course shallower than at higher luminance. Simulated saccades produced shallower suppression over a longer time course at both higher and lower luminance. In a second experiment the time course of contrast sensitivity to chromatically modulated gratings, at 17 cd·m¯², was examined. No suppression was found; rather there was some evidence of an enhancement of sensitivity, both before and after saccades, relative to fixation conditions. Differences in the effects of real and simulated saccades in the magnitude and time course of sensitivity loss with luminance modulated gratings suggest that saccadic suppression has an extraretinal component that acts on the magnocellular system; the pattern of enhancement found in the later experiment suggests a selective favouring of the parvocellular system both immediately prior to and immediately after saccades. The possibility that the degree of enhancement in sensitivity varies across the visual field was examined using spatially localized stimuli (either high spatial frequency chromatically modulated gratings or letter combinations). Sensitivity was found to decrease at the initial fixation point during the 75 ms prior to saccadic onset and simultaneously to improve at the saccadic target. In the immediate post-saccadic period, sensitivity at the saccadic target was found to exceed that which had been manifest at the initial fixation point prior to saccades, suggesting that post-saccadic enhancement may improve the temporal contrast between one fixation and the next. The final experiments investigated the possibility that our sense of continuity across saccades (as opposed to stability) is influenced by saccade-induced errors in locating events in time. The results of these experiments suggest that saccades can result in errors in judging (a) the time at which external events occur relative to saccadic onset, (b) the temporal order of visual events, and (c) the magnitude of temporal intervals. It is concluded that apparent time is generally foreshortened prior to saccades. This might be due to selective suppression of magnocellular activity and might function to hide saccades and their effects from our awareness. A speculative synthesis is presented based on the idea that recurrent feedback between the neocortical and cortical structures on the one hand, and the thalamic nuclei on the other, has special importance for perception around the time of saccades

Evaluation of Changes in Speech Production Induced by Conventional and Level-Dependent Hearing Protectors and Noise Characteristics

The use of personal hearing protection devices (HPDs) is often recommended to protect workers' hearing from noise-induced damage when no other means of reducing noise levels at the source is effective. The effects of HPDs on speech communication cannot be neglected in spite of their benefit in reducing the risk of hearing loss. While much research has been directed at speech perception, much less is known on how HPDs affect speech production. The tendency of talkers to raise their vocal effort in noise, known as the Lombard effect, is often disrupted by HPDs due to their occlusion effect and the lower noise at the ears as well as the attenuated feedback from one’s own voice. Three main knowledge gaps are addressed in this thesis. The first gap is to characterize speech produced by talkers with or without HPDs under realistic acoustic conditions while immersed in an external noise field. The second gap is to evaluate more comprehensively speech production under protected and unprotected talker and listener ear conditions in different types of fluctuating and continous noises. The third gap is to assess the alterations in the characteristics of speech produced by talkers wearing level-dependent HPDs set at different transmission gain settings and in comparison with passive HPDs. This thesis extends methods used to recover Lombard speech elicited in an external noise field. For this purpose, two noise suppression methods, direct waveform subtraction (DWS) and adaptive noise cancellation (ANC), were found to adequately remove noise from speech recorded for SNRs as low as −10 dB. Moreover, this work contributes new knowledge on the effects of conventional passive HPDs on speech production. When talker wears HPD in noise then speech level were found to decrease by up to 9 dB in continuous noises and by 7 dB in fluctuating noises compared to open ears, while speech levels were found to increase by about 5 dB in all noises when the listener wears HPD. Furthermore, changes in pitch and spectral levels were consistent with changes in speech levels. The effects of level-dependent HPD on speech production, depending on the chosen transmission gain setting, revealed that it led to smaller decrease in talkers’ speech levels in noise compared to conventional passive HPD. These findings indicate that the level-dependent HPDs may impede communication less than conventional passive HPDs, while providing protection against high levels of noise.

Passive coherent location (PCL) radars employ illuminators of opportunity to detect and track targets. This silent operating mode provides many advantages such as low cost and interception immunity. Many radiation sources have been exploited as illumination sources such as broadcasting and telecommunication transmitters. The classical architecture of the bistatic PCL radars involves two receiving channels: a reference channel and a surveillance channel. The reference channel captures the direct-path signal from the transmitter, and the surveillancesignal collects the possible target echoes. The two major challenges for the PCL radars are the reference signal noise and the surveillance signal static clutter. A noisy reference signal degrades the detection probability by increasing the noise-floor level of the detection filter output. And the static clutter presence in the surveillance signal reduces the detector dynamic range and buries low magnitude echoes.In this thesis, we consider a PCL radar based on the digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T) signals, and we propose a set of improved methods to deal with the reference signal noise and the static clutter in the surveillance signal. The DVB-T signals constitute an excellentcandidate as an illumination source for PCL radars; they are characterized by a wide bandwidth and a high radiated power. In addition, they provide the possibility of reconstructing the reference signal to enhance its quality, and they allow a straightforward static clutter suppressionin the frequency domain. This thesis proposes an optimum method for the reference signal reconstruction and an improved method for the static clutter suppression.The optimum reference signal reconstruction minimizes the mean square error between the reconstructed signal and the exact one. And the improved static clutter suppression method exploits the possibility of estimating the propagation channel. Bats, insects and pecans: habitat use and ecosystem services of insectivorous bats in a pecan agroecosystem in central Texas

Comprehensive wildlife conservation strategies must include consideration of the agricultural matrix and its integration into the greater landscape. Bats are postulated to provide critical pest suppression services, but the effects of agricultural intensification on insectivorous bats are not clear. Few studies have thoroughly investigated the ecosystem services provided by bats due, in part, to limited understanding of species-specific habitat use in agricultural landscapes, difficulties in prey identification, and the challenge of quantifying the impact of bats on pest populations and crops. My dissertation integrates these components to describe ecological relationships between the insects and bats associated with a pecan agroecosystem in central Texas. Specifically, I focus on the predator-prey relationship between bats and the pecan nut casebearer moth (PNC), a devastating pest of pecans. I begin with a literature review of the ecosystem services of insectivorous bats and the data necessary to thoroughly evaluate these services. I then assess the potential factors influencing species composition and spatio-temporal distributions of bats within the pecan agroecosystem. My results demonstrate higher activity and diversity of bats within the pecan agroecosystem than in the surrounding landscape likely due to roosting opportunities, but species-specific and seasonal differences exist in the effects of management intensity. Next, I investigate direct interactions between bats and PNC by measuring prey consumption patterns. I found that five species of bats prey upon PNC moths during all three critical population peaks prior to insecticide application, but there is variability in consumption among species. Finally, I assess indirect interactions between bats and pecans, by evaluating the effect of bat predation risk on pecan damage by PNC larvae. A negative relationship between foraging activity by bats and both PNC moths and PNC larval damage to pecans provides evidence that bat predation has quantitative downstream effects. My results highlight the conservation value of the agricultural matrix for bats and the complexities of accurately documenting ecosystem services provided by free-ranging mobile organisms.

Behavioral characterization of an operant model of binge-like eating in rats

Binge eating disorder is characterized by excessive consumption of highly palatable food within short periods of time accompanied by loss of control over eating. Extensive evidence provides support for the consideration of binge eating disorder as an addiction-like disorder. In this study, we wanted to determine whether rats undergoing an operant binge-like eating procedure could develop maladaptive forms of conditioned feeding behaviors. For this purpose, we trained male rats to self-administer either a sugary, highly palatable diet (Palatable rats) or a chow diet (Chow rats) for 1 hour/day. Following escalation and stabilization of palatable food intake, we tested both Chow and Palatable rats in a i) conditioned place preference, a ii) second-order schedule of reinforcement and, finally, a iii) cue-induced suppression of feeding. In the conditioned place preference task, Palatable rats spent significantly more time in the compartment which was paired with the palatable food when compared to Chow controls. Furthermore, in the second-order schedule of reinforcement task, Palatable rats exhibited active lever responding 4- to 6-fold higher than Chow control rats. Finally, in the conditioned suppression of feeding test, while Chow control subjects reduced responding by one-third in the presence of the conditioned punishment, Palatable rats persevered in responding despite the aversive cue. These results further characterize our animal model of binge-like eating and provide additional evidence for the addictive properties of highly palatable food.

Traitement spatial des interférences pour les radiotélescopes de nouvelle génération / Radio Frequency Interference spatial processing for modern radio telescopes

La radio astronomie étudie les sources cosmiques au travers de leur rayonnement dans le domaine radio. Les astronomes, utilisateurs passifs du spectre électromagnétique, ont à faire face à une pollution radio de plus en plus importante. Cette thèse s’intéresse particulièrement aux interférences radio d’origine humaine (RFI), et comment les observations radio astronomiques peuvent être réalisées en bandes de fréquences non-protégées. Les approches classiques consistent à contrôler les paramètres statistiques d’une observation. Une fois détectées, les données polluées sont retirées avant post-traitement. En plus d’autres avantages techniques par rapport aux radiotélescopes paraboliques classiques, les réseaux d’antennes offrent une information spatiale lors d’une observation astronomique. La diversité spatiale entre source cosmique d’intérêt (SCOI) et RFI peut être exploitée pour développer des traitements spatiaux d’interférences. Après la formulation d’un module de données multidimensionnel, une technique de soustraction de sous espace RFI est introduite. Cette technique consiste à soustraire la contribution des RFI aux données d’une observation. La projection orthogonale a déjà été considérée auparavant. Cependant, l’orthogonalité requise entre CSOI et RFI pour retrouver une source d’intérêt non biaisée ne peut vraisemblablement pas être satisfaite. Une approche basée sur une projection oblique est introduite afin de pallier à cette condition. Les techniques de projections sont comparées aux techniques classiques de beamforming en termes de réjection de l’interférence et de récupération de la source d’intérêt. Le sous-espace RFI est inconnu de manière générale et se doit d’être estimé. Plusieurs techniques permettant cette estimation, basées sur des propriétés statistiques des RFI et sources cosmiques, sont également présentées et comparées. Les différentes techniques ont été appliquées à des données astronomiques délivrées par le radio télescope Européen LOFAR. Enfin, une implémentation d’un algorithme de traitement spatial d’interférences sur le démonstrateur EMBRACE est présenté. / Radio astronomy studies cosmic sources through their radio emissions. As passive users, astronomers have to deal with an increasingly corrupted radio spectrum. The research presented here focuses on man-made Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), and how astronomical observations can be performed in non-protected frequency bands. Traditional approaches consist in monitoring radio telescopes output data through statistical parameters. Once detected, the corrupted data is removed before further processing. Besides other technical advantages compared to single dish radio telescopes, antenna arrays provide spatial information about astronomical observations. The spatial diversity between cosmic sources-of-interest (CSOI) and RFI can be exploited to develop spatial RFI processing. After formulating a multidimensional radio astronomical data model, an interference subspace subtraction technique is introduced. This approach consists in subtracting RFI contributions from antenna array radio telescopes data. Orthogonal projection applied to astronomical observation vector spaces has already been considered by the past. The orthogonality between RFI and CSOI subspaces is required to recover the CSOI without bias. In order to avoid this latter requirement, an oblique projection approach is here proposed. The projection techniques are compared to classic beamforming techniques in term of interference rejection and CSOI recovering. Being usually unknown, the RFI subspace has to be estimated. Several techniques allowing this estimation, based on statistical properties of RFI and cosmic sources (whiteness and cyclostationarity), are also presented and compared. The different techniques have been applied to real astronomical data, provided by the European radio telescope LOFAR. A last section presents an RFI mitigation algorithm implemented on the demonstrator EMBRACE.
