Ben Mustapha, Sélima January 2014 (has links)
// Abstract : The Arctic Ocean ecosystem is experiencing significant changes such as a drastic reduction in seasonal sea-ice cover linked to global warming. These changes are likely to modify the physics, biogeochemistry and ecology of this unique environment in ways that are yet to be understood. In this context, we processed satellite data and in situ measurements in the southeastern Beaufort Sea to explore the spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton biomass and link it to existing physical processes in this region. The optical properties of the Beaufort Sea being under the influence of the Mackenzie River plume, it was likely that operational ocean color algorithms did not allow an accurate estimate of chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) that is a key indicator of phytoplankton biomass and marine productivity. Analysis of bio-optical data confirmed this hypothesis showing an overestimation of Chl-a in situ by a factor of three to five. High contribution of colored dissolved organic matter and non algal particles to the blue light absorption appears as the source of that poor performance. We propose regionally adapted and new algorithms using ratio of two spectral bands allowing better accuracy estimation of Chl-a in the southeastern Beaufort Sea. A match-up analysis of coincident in situ data and satellite overpass showed that the normalized water-leaving reflectance and the blue-to-green ratio retrieval were more accurate for SeaWiFS data than for MODIS and MERIS data. We investigated temporal and spatial linkages between physical and biological parameters to infer the boundaries of biophysical areas in the Canadian Beaufort Sea. Monthly sea surface temperature (AVHRR) data and chlorophyll a data from SeaWiFS were collected over seven years in five geographical sub-regions in the Beaufort Sea (1998-2004). Results showed that the spatial, temporal and inter-annual variability of phytoplankton biomass are driven by several environmental factors affecting the stratification of the water column : wind forcing, ice dynamics, air temperature, irradiance and currents. A cluster analysis based on the concept of non-static provinces was used to define four biophysical provinces in this sea. Positive temporal trends were detected for Chl-a over two regions of the Beaufort Sea : the Mackenzie Shelf and the southern portion of Amundsen Gulf. Finally, an analysis of spatial gradients, using 11 years of sea surface temperature images, allowed the detection of recurrent thermal fronts. These spatial structures play a major role in the marine ecosystem, particularly because of their impact on the development of phytoplankton biomass. We highlighted new frontal structures on the Mackenzie Shelf and in the Cape Bathurst polynya area. These identified new fronts are mainly related to bathymetric features of the region, the presence of the Mackenzie River plume and the Beaufort Gyre. In conclusion, this study has generated new information on the interactions between physical and biological processes to better understand the biogeochemical and ecological consequences of climate change in the Beaufort Sea.

Rozvoj inverzních úloh vedení tepla řešených s využitím optimalizačních postupů a vysokého stupně paralelizace / Development of inverse tasks solved by using the optimizing procedures and large number of parallel threads

Ondroušková, Jana Unknown Date (has links)
In metallurgy it is important to know a cooling efficiency of a product as well as cooling efficiency of working rolls to maximize the quality of the product and to achieve the long life of working rolls. It is possible to examine this cooling efficiency by heat transfer coefficients and surface temperatures. The surface temperature is hardly measured during the cooling. It is better to compute it together with heat transfer coefficient by inverse heat conduction problem. The computation is not easy and it uses estimated values which are verified by direct heat conduction problem. The time-consuming of this task can be several days or weeks, depends on the complexity of the model. Thus there are tendencies to shorten the computational time. This doctoral thesis considers the possible way of the computing time shortening of inverse heat conduction problem, which is the parallelization of this task and its transfer to a graphic card. It has greater computing power than the central processing unit (CPU). One computer can have more compute devices. That is why the computing time on different types of devices is compared in this thesis. Next this thesis deals with obtaining of surface temperatures for the computation by infrared line scanner and using of inverse heat conduction problem for the computing of the surface temperature and heat transfer coefficient during passing of a test sample under cooling section and cooling by high pressure nozzles.

Etude de l'habitat épipélagique du Golfe de Tadjourah (Djibouti) : structures de variabilité et processus qui les gouvernent / Study of the epipelagic habitat of the Gulf of Tadjourah (Djibouti) : structures of variability and processes that govern them

Omar Youssouf, Moussa 23 March 2016 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to study the physical and biogeochemical characteristics of the pelagic habitat (0-200m), its spatio-temporal variability and the processes that govern them in the Gulf of Tadjourah (Djibouti).Singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) were applied to two data sets derived from AVHRR_MetopA radiometry and sea colour sensors (Modis and Meris). These statistical analysis shows that the variability of sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a concentration (CHLa) are mainly explained by annual and semi-annual cycles. The annual cycle of SST consists of an alternation between warmer (April to October) and cooler (November to March) surface water. The semi-annual cycle shows a slight drop of SST between July and August, particularly in the west of the gulf. For the CHLa, the variability is fully dominated by the annual cycle indicating summer enrichment of seashore water (July-November) with a strong seaward gradient which is reversed from October to May. Multichannel spectrum analysis (M-SSA) and cross correlation function analysis applied to the oceanic (SST, CHL-a) and atmospheric parameters (wind speed, air temperature and humidity) showed that the annual cycle of SST is connected to heat flux at the air-sea interface, while the summer drop of SST and its associated CHL-a increase were attributed to upwelling. In the second part, in order to elucidate this oceanic influence on SST and CHL-a, the vertical thermohaline and biogeochemical structures of the upper layer (0-200 m) were studied using high-resolution hydrographic data collected in July-August 2013, September 2013 and February 2014. During summer, the superficial layer consisted of the mixed layer (ML) extending to a depth of about 20-30 m, followed by the thermocline located between 30 and 50 m depth. The ML was thicker in the west and the southeast where the thermal gradient and chlorophyll a concentrations were particularly high. During September, this stratification persisted but the ML became warmer and saltier and the thermocline moved slightly deeper. In February, the ML extended to about 120 m, and the thermocline was less pronounced. A comparison of the directly measured currents to the wind induced Ekman currents and to geostrophic current profiles revealed that the thermohaline and the biogeochemical features were related to the southeast and northeast monsoon winds (SWM & NEM). Between June and August, the SWM drives surface water from the Gulf of Tadjourah to the Gulf of Aden and thus induces the westward intrusion of high salinity thermocline water from the Gulf of Aden. This near surface flow mixes surface waters in the extreme west of the Gulf of Tadjourah. In contrast, the NEM which blow from September to May, bring cold water toward the Gulf of Tadjourah and thickens the ML through convective mixing. Our thesis shows that the monsoon winds and their seasonal reversal play a crucial role in the stratification of the water column, but that their effects are additionally influenced by basin topography. During summer the bowl-shape of the basin and its elongated slope in the west enhance the upwelling in this area where negative sea surface temperature anomalies and high chlorophyll a concentrations were observed.

Désagrégation spatiale de températures Météosat par une méthode d'assimilation de données (lisseur particulaire) dans un modèle de surface continentale / Spatial downscaling of Meteosat temperatures based on a data assimilation approach (Particle Smoother) to constrain a land surface model

Mechri, Rihab 04 December 2014 (has links)
Land surface temperature (LST) is one of the most important meteorologicalvariables giving access to water and energy budgets governing the Biosphere-Atmosphere continuum. To better monitor vegetation and energy states, we need hightemporal and spatial resolution measures of LST because its high variability in spaceand time.Despite the growing availability of Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) remote sensing LSTproducts, at different spatial and temporal resolutions, both high spatial resolution(HSR) and high temporal resolution (HTR) TIR data is still not possible because ofsatellite resolutions trade-off : the most frequent LST products being low spatial resolution(LSR) ones.It is therefore necessary to develop methods to estimate HSR/HTR LST from availableTIR LSR/HTR ones. This solution is known as "downscaling" and the presentthesis proposes a new approach for downscaling LST based on Data Assimilation (DA)methods. The basic idea is to constrain HSR/HTR LST dynamics, simulated by a dynamicalmodel, through the minimization of their respective aggregated LSTs discrepancytoward LSR observations, assuming that LST is homogeneous at the land cover typescale inside the LSR pixel. Our method uses a particle smoother DA method implemented in a land surfacemodel : SETHYS model (Suivie de l’Etat Hydrique de Sol). The proposed approach hasbeen firstly evaluated in a synthetic framework then validated using actual TIR LSTover a small area in South-East of France. Meteosat LST time series were downscaledfrom 5km to 90m and validated with ASTER HSR LST over one day. The encouragingresults conducted us to expand the study area and consider a larger assimilation periodof seven months. The downscaled Meteosat LSTs were quantitatively validated at1km of spatial resolution (SR) with MODIS data and qualitatively at 30m of SR withLandsat7 data. The results demonstrated good performances with downscaling errorsless than 2.5K at MODIS scale (1km of SR).

Observação da Variação Espectral e Posicional da Frente Brasil-Malvinas por Sensoriamento Remoto / Observation of the Brazil-Malvinas front spectral variability and positional variation by remote sensing

The Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) is formed by the encounter of the Brazil Current (BC) with the Malvinas Current (MC) at the South Atlantic ocean. This is one of the most energetic regions of the world oceans and it is characterized by intense meridional sea surface temperature gradients. Satellite data and in situ observations often reveal the presence of cyclonic and anticyclonic meanders and vortices at the BMC region. The sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) and the sea surface temperature (SST) fields of the Brazil-Malvinas Frontal (BMF) region can be used to determine the energy variations associated with the annual and bi-annual Rossby waves that occur at its surroundings and to detect the position of the thermal front. Our study involved the determination of the BMF meridional displacement on an interannual scale, the spectral variations of the Rossby wave field at the BMC region, and the variability associated to the mean absolute geostrophic velocities. The Rossby wave spectra at the BMC for 2001-2008 show an increase of the energy associated with both the annual and bi--annual periods relative to the 1993-2000 interval. These spectral changes are not directly related to the mean changes in the thermal front region, however we detected a significant meridional variability of the mean position of the front most probably due to an increase in the BC flux. Large variations were also observed in the geostrophic velocity field for the 2001-2008 period. These maps exhibited a farther south location of the BC. This corroborates the variability increase due to a greater instability introduced by the planetary waves at the BMC region.

Modelling of directional thermal radiation and angular correction on land surface temperature from space / Modélisation du rayonnement thermique directionnel et corrections angulaires de la température de surface mesurée à distance

Ren, Huazhong 24 May 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is the modeling of surface directional thermal radiation and angular correction on the LST by using empirical and physical methods as well as the analysis of field validation. The work has conducted to some conclusions. The directional emissivity of natural surfaces was obtained from MODIS emissivity product and then used in the split-window algorithm for angular correction on LST. The parameterization models of directional emissivity and thermal radiation were developed. As for the non-isothermal pixels, the daytime-TISI method was proposed to retrieve directional emissivity and effective temperature from multi-angular middle and thermal infrared data. This was validated using an airborne dataset. The kernel-driven BRDF model was checked in the thermal infrared domain and its extension was used to make angular normalization on the LST. A new model, namely FovMod that concerns on the footprint of ground sensor, was developed to simulate directional brightness temperature of row crop canopy. Based on simulation result of the FovMod, an optimal footprintfor field validation of LST was obtained. This thesis has systematically investigated the topic of directional thermal radiation and angular correction on surface temperature and its findings will improve the retrieval accuracy of temperature and emissivity from remotely sensed data and will also provide suggestion for the future design of airborne or spaceborne multi-angular thermal infrared sensors and also for the ground measurement of surface parameters.

Reconstituição paleoceanográfica e inferências paleoclimáticas na margem equatorial Brasileira no Holoceno Médio e Tardio / Paleoceanography reconstruction and paleoclimate inferences on Brazilian equatorial margin in Mid- and Late Holocene

Nancy Kazumi Taniguchi 05 August 2015 (has links)
O terceiro período (2500 anos cal A.P. / Sedimentological and geochemical analyzes on sedimentary record GeoB 16204-2 (01°9.75 \'S, 42°20:30\'W, 1210 m depth) allowed to recognize three periods with different paleoceanographic settings and paleoclimatic over the last 8100 years for the Brazilian equatorial margin . The first period (8100 - 5000 cal yr BP) was characterized by more intense hydrodynamic conditions, lower marine influence and greater continental contribution, evidenced by lower values of sortable silt, higher percentage of sand fraction, lower CaCO3 content and higher values of the Ti / Ca and Fe / Ca ratios. The second period (5000 - 2500 cal yr BP) showed greater fluctuations in the intensity of bottom currents and decreased continental contribution indicated by variations of sortable silt, poorly defined mode in the particle size distribution (PSD) and decrease trend of the Ti / Ca and Fe / Ca ratios. The third period (2500 cal yr BP - present), was dominated by less intense hydrodynamic conditions and less continental contribution indicated by for mode PSD about 7 Φ and lower values of Fe/Ca and Ti/Ca ratios. Over the 8100 years there has been a weakening of North Brazilian Current, probably associated with a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and also the southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Besides influencing ocean currents the migration of the ITCZ also contributed to changes atmospheric conditions, favoring drier conditions in the study area during the Late Holocene. Sea surface temperature ans salinity show little change in the last 5000 years, with values close to the current climatological average, 26.4 ° C and 36.5.

Pareamento bacia-lagoa usando modelagem hidrológica-hidrodinâmica e sensoriamento remoto

Munar Samboní, Andrés Mauricio January 2017 (has links)
The last decade, the water resource management is being complex due to the rapid socioeconomic development and environmental changes in river basins. Computations models are important support tools in water resource management and make decision providing important information and allowing a better comprehension of the physical, chemical and biologic processes, which occur in di erent temporal/spatial scales. In this thesis, the objective was to understand the hydrological functioning of the integrated basin- lake system and its e ects on hydrodynamics, using hydrodynamic - hydrodynamic modeling and water quality monitoring (e.g., chlorophyll-a, water surface temperature and water levels) from remote sensing techniques. The study area is the Lake Mirim basin, located between Brazil and Uruguay (basin total area 58.000 km2). Empirical models were proposed and tested to chlorophyll-a estimation in a shallow subtropical lake, based on MODIS imagery and statistics techniques. In addition, we developed and assessed the coupling of large scale hydrological/hydrodynamic modeling and remote sensing techniques. The large-scale distributed hydrological model MGB-IPH coupled with the hydrodynamic model IPHECO were used to simulate the river basin and the hydrodynamic components of the Lake Mirim. The coupled model showed good performance when compared to in-situ measurements and satellite altimetry data. The simulations showed important aspects relate to flow structure, velocity fields and lake water levels, as well as the influence of large rivers, external forcing as such the wind (intensity and direction), and the impact of anthropogenic stressors (irrigation withdrawals) in the system. The simulations allowed assessing the spatial and temporal variations (diurnal, monthly, seasonal and inter-annual) in the water surface temperature, heat fluxes dynamics (sensible and latent) and the e ects of short time-scale events, as such cold fronts passages over the lake, which cause strong impacts on the water surface temperature and heat fluxes in the lake. Regarding the empirical models developed to chlorophyll-a estimation from MODIS imagery, the results showed that a simple and e cient model developed from multiple regression analysis, performed best in comparison with artificial neural network models, non-parametric multiplicative models, and empirical models (e.g., Appel, Kahru, FAI and O14a) common used in the Chl-a estimation in aquatics environments. Results also indicated that is inappropriate to generalize a single model developed from the total datasets to estimates Chl-a in the lake, which corroborates the spatial heterogeneity (Chl-a distribution) and the di erences among regions (littoral and pelagic). The synergy between large-scale hydrological-hydrodynamic modeling, in situ measurements and remote sensing techniques provided a promising approach to improve the comprehension of the structure and ecosystem functioning of large shallow lakes in long-term time scale, useful to water resources management.

Reconstituição paleoceanográfica e inferências paleoclimáticas na margem equatorial Brasileira no Holoceno Médio e Tardio / Paleoceanography reconstruction and paleoclimate inferences on Brazilian equatorial margin in Mid- and Late Holocene

Taniguchi, Nancy Kazumi 05 August 2015 (has links)
O terceiro período (2500 anos cal A.P. / Sedimentological and geochemical analyzes on sedimentary record GeoB 16204-2 (01°9.75 \'S, 42°20:30\'W, 1210 m depth) allowed to recognize three periods with different paleoceanographic settings and paleoclimatic over the last 8100 years for the Brazilian equatorial margin .
