Cantin, Ariane January 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Diffuser Operations at Spring Hollow Reservoir

Gantzer, Paul Anthony 28 May 2002 (has links)
Stratification is a natural occurrence in deep lakes and reservoirs. This phenomenon results in two distinct layers, the warmer, less dense epilimnion on top and the colder, denser, hypolimnion on the bottom. The epilimnion remains saturated with dissolved oxygen (DO) from mass transfer with the atmosphere, while the hypolimnion continues to undergo oxygen-depleting processes. During seasons of high oxygen demand the hypolimnion often becomes anoxic and results in the release of compounds, such as Iron, Manganese, Hydrogen Sulfide, and Phosphorous from the sediment. Iron, Manganese, and Hydrogen Sulfide can require addition Chlorine for water treatment plants, thus increasing cost and the potential production of DBP's, while the release of phosphorous results in algal blooms the following year. Spring Hollow Reservoir, located in Roanoke County, Virginia is a deep reservoir that undergoes stratification during the summer months. During 1997 Roanoke County purchased a bubble-plume diffuser from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to oxygenate the hypolimnion to maintain long-term water quality. Spring Hollow currently operates the diffuser, with compressed air, during late summer months when DO levels in the hypolimnion reach approximately 4 mg/L. Observations during oxygenation have identified changing DO addition rates during diffuser operation and changing DO depletion rates following termination of oxygenation. Future research should focus on developing a quantitative understanding of the changing rates as they are related to diffuser induced oxygen demand. / Master of Science

Drivers of thermocline shear in seasonally stratified shelf seas

Li, Jingnan January 2017 (has links)
Shelf seas occupy only 7% in area and less than 0.5% in volume of the entire ocean, but they play an important role in the carbon cycle by taking about 20% - 50% of all the CO2 absorbed by the ocean. Diapycnal mixing is a key process in transporting nutrients, carbon, water mass etc. between the surface and the lower mixed layers in a seasonally stratified shelf sea. The identification and quantification of the processes responsible for driving diapycnal mixing in seasonally stratified seas are the subjects worth study. Early researchers have examined the correlation between enhanced bulk shear and the wind. The bulk shear is defined as the average of the shear in two defined layers which are either side of the thermocline. However the contribution from the barotropic tide has generally been neglected. This study examines two stages of the evolution of water column stratification: the spring development stage and the autumn break down stage. Rotary spectral analysis shows that the shear across thermocline corresponds to different drivers when the water stratification is different. At the spring development stage, the shear across the thermocline corresponds to near-inertial oscillations, which are related to wind. Whilst at the autumn break down stage, the shear across thermocline relates to both the near-inertial oscillations and the barotropic tide. Thus, in contraction to earlier research, our research suggests that the barotropic tide is another dominant driver in the generation of shear. However not all observations can be explained by the wind or barotropic tide. The additional consideration of the baroclinic tide helps explain the signal of an odd shear spike observed in the northern North Sea, which occurred during a period of weak shear production by the wind and barotropic tide. A 1D two-layer vertical dynamic numerical model and a 1D turbulence closure numerical model were applied to investigate the impact of wind and barotropic tide on shear, respectively. In addition, the impacts of hydrographic conditions on the driver of shear were considered. Coherence analysis was applied to examine the similarity of constituents (in frequency domain) between the modelled shear production and the observations. The model sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the switch of driver of shear is highly related to the depth ratio, which is the ratio of thermocline depth over water depth.

Étude et modélisation des systèmes de stockage thermique de type régénératif solide/fluide / Study and modeling of regenerative solid/fluid heat storage systems

Esence, Thibaut 07 November 2017 (has links)
This study deals with regenerative heat storage systems which aim to store sensible heat in a packed bed. The system is charged and discharged thanks to a heat transfer fluid which circulates through the packed bed. This kind of system is promising to reduce the cost of heat storage facilities, for example in concentrated solar power plants. However, the operation of these systems is relatively complex because their thermal behavior is governed by several phenomena and heat transfer modes. Thanks to the identification of these mechanisms, a one-dimensional numerical model consisting of one continuity equation and three energy conservation equations has been developed. There is one energy equation for the heat transfer fluid, one for the packed bed and one for the walls of the tank. The experimental studies carried out on three different systems (an oil/rock+sand system, a gas/rock system and a structured gas/ceramic system) and experimental results from the literature have enabled to validate the model in various configurations. The model is able to deal with liquid or gaseous heat transfer fluids and with structured packed beds with channels or granular packed beds with uniformly sized particles or particles of two different sizes.

Reconstructions of Hydrography of the Western Pacific Warm Pool and the Linkage to the Global Climate System over the Past 2.2 Ma

Lin, Pin-chuan 12 September 2012 (has links)
The Region of Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) is closely related to Global climate system. Previous studies indicate that the region of WPWP is affected by Walker circulation (WC) and Hadley cell (HC). WPWP expands when WC becomes stronger or when HC becomes weaker, and contracts when WC becomes weaker or when HC becomes stronger. In this study, records derived from core ODP1115B, including stable oxygen and carbon isotopes are used to reconstruct the long-term hydrological variations of WPWP over the past 2.2 Ma. We compared two species of foraminifera: Neogloboquadrina dutertrei and Globigerinoides sacculifer, for the reconstruction of differences between surface water and oceanic subsurface water. We try to find out the relationships between the thermocline depth in southern WPWP, the region of WPWP, HC and WC. However, our records indicate that the depth of thermocline in southern WPWP may be effected by the region of WPWP and the hydrology of southern WPWP. According to the Paleothermometry records of ODP806, ODP847, ODP1115 and MD063018, we can explain the relationship between WC, HC and the region of WPWP. Before 1.8 Ma, southern WPWP may not be affected by weak WC. During 1.8~1.2 Ma, WC becomes stronger and effect the region of WPWP. At the period of 1.2~0.9 Ma, southward migration of WPWP enhanced the influence of WC on the region of south WPWP and the depth of thermocline, then weakened HC in the southern hemisphere. After 0.9 Ma, the variation of hydrology in southern WPWP may be affected by stronge WC, not HC. We suggest that the influence of HC in southern WPWP is resulted in the southern region of WPWP.

Gauthier, Joanna 11 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Diversité cryptique du zooplancton carbonaté et réponse aux changements globaux du pléistocène à l'anthropocène / Carbonate zooplankton cryptic diversity and response to climate changes from pleistocene to anthropocène

Regoli, Fabienne 10 July 2014 (has links)
The Equatorial West Pacific thermocline dynamic is strongly modulated by climatic phenomenon as the ENSO and the Indo Asiatic monsoon. Here we use fossils of two morphotypes of the same planktonic foraminifera species, Globigerinoides ruber, from the Southern edge of the Western Equatorial Pacific as proxy of paleostratification, in order to track climate changes since the last 800 000 years. Our results show a regular beating of the Equatorial Pacific thermocline in response to Glacial/ Interglacial changes connected to the high latitudes. During glacials, the reinforced South subtropical gyre increases the advection of cold waters from the Antarctic to the West Pacific. This mechanism was progressively intensified by the increasing obliquity amplitude since 800 000 years. The morphometric study of the two morphotypes of Globigerinoides ruber indicates that the test shape responses to environmental changes at Glacial/Interglacial time scale. Furthermore these results suggest that those two populations have distinct environmental requirements, allowing to uses them as proxy of stratification. The mono-morphotypic calibration for Mg/Ca derived-paleotemperatures indicates that there is no specific thermodependance of magnesium between the two morphotypes.

Imagerie sismique et océanographique des masses d'eau sur le plateau continental breton / Seismic and oceanographic imaging of water bodies on the continental shelf of Brittany

Piété, Helen 17 December 2012 (has links)
This work is a preliminary study for the development of a new tool, marine seismic reflection, for the observation of the seasonal thermocline of the Iroise Sea. It is the first application of this technique to the observation of shallow oceanographic structures (z < 50 m). In order to define general requirements for the design of a seismic acquisition system suited to the imaging of such targets, the theory of the seismic measurement was first investigated. Four multi-channel seismic reflection profiles from the GO, Carambar and Sigolo cruises were then reprocessed and analyzed in order to assess the potential of conventional seismic systems. They were found ill suited to the imaging of shallow oceanographic structures, because of a high antenna filter induced by large offsets and seismic trace lengths, and sources that do not reconcile with the high level of emission and fine vertical resolution. New oceanographic data acquired in the Iroise Sea during the Fromvar 2010 cruise allowed simulation of the seismic acquisition, and the definition of optimal acquisition parameters for the imaging of the seasonal thermocline. Sea trials of this specifically designed system were performed during the ASPEX survey, conducted in early summer 2012. The seismic device featured: four seismic streamers, each consisting of 6 traces of 1.80 m.; a 1000 J SIG Sparker source, providing a 400 Hz signal with a level of emission of 210 dB re 1 μPa @1m. This survey captured the 15 m thick, 30 m deep seasonal thermocline in unprecedented detail, showing images of vertical displacements of horizontal wavelength of a several hundreds m to a few km , most probably induced by internal waves.

Combinaisons huiles/solides pour le stockage thermocline : De l’étude des matériaux au modèle de stockage thermique / Oils/solids combinations for thermocline storage : From materials to storage modelling

Molina, Sophie 19 September 2018 (has links)
These last decades, stronger constraints on the energy sector and fossil sources depletion have pushed towards an increased development of storage technologies, which benefited from a renewed interest from researchers and industrialists. These technologies can be implemented in various applications, for example in combination with renewable energy sources or for waste heat recovery in industrial processes. Several concepts have been developed so far, and among them the dual-media thermocline, which consists in storing thermal energy in a single tank, containing a fluid in direct contact with a solid matrix.Therm’Stock project, led by the CNIM group and supported by the “Investissements d’Avenir” program from ADEME, has focused on this dual-media thermocline system. This project started in 2015, gathering the leading company and three laboratories, including the Laboratory for Thermal, Energy and Process engineering (LaTEP) from the University of Pau (UPPA). LaTEP contribution to the project has been focused on storage material selection and characterization, and more particularly on thermal oils as heat transfer fluids. The study began with a screening of commercial thermal oils, in order to select the ones that could match the constraints linked to Therm’Stock project, and especially the temperature range chosen, between 100 and 350°C. The identified oils have then been characterized using the devices available at LaTEP, to define a priority order for their evaluation for thermal storage. Jarytherm® DBT oil showed promising properties, and this fluid was chosen for the following analyses. These analyses focused on two main aspects, of interest for dual-media thermocline systems: oil ageing, and its compatibility with solid storage medium. The influence of temperature and time on oil ageing has been evaluated, along with the importance of the solid in direct contact with the fluid. In total, 15 oils/solids combinations have been considered, with 18 test campaigns. Two solids have shown promising compatibility with Jarytherm® DBT oil: steel and soda-lime glass. In order to complete the laboratory-scale tests, these two combinations have been introduced and tested in a pilot-scale dual-media thermocline, developed and exploited by Bertin Technologies, a CNIM group affiliate. Some of these experimental data have been shared with LaTEP, and allowed for a pilot-scale study of storage performance with the selected materials. This analysis was then complemented by a numerical study, through the development of a specific one-dimensional storage model. Using this model, experimental data generated on Bertin Technologies pilot could be confirmed and extended. Integrating data from laboratory-scale ageing tests, the influence of heat transfer fluid degradation on storage performance has also been evaluated.
