Software-based gradient nonlinearity distortion correction

The primary purpose of the thesis is to discuss the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in functional proton radiosurgery. The methods presented in this thesis were specifically designed to correct gradient nonlinearity distortion, the single greatest hurdle that limits the deployment of MRI-based functional proton radiosurgery systems. The new system central in the thesis fully utilized MRI to provide localization of anatomical targets with submillimeter accuracy. The thesis provides analysis and solutions to the problems related to gradient nonlinearity distortion. The characteristics of proton radiosurgery are introduced, in addition to a discussion of its advantages over other current methods of radiation oncology. A historical background for proton radiosurgery is also presented, along with a description of its implementation at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), where a new system for functional proton radiosurgery has been proposed and is currently under development.

Design of a microcomputer-based open heart surgery patient monitor

A patient monitor device for use during open heart surgery has been designed and constructed. The device uses a VIC 20 microcomputer along with some additional circuitry to monitor 3 separate functions. The first patient variable monitored is the blood flow rate through the extracorporeal blood circuit during surgery. The device also continuously monitors and displays 6 separate temperatures. Finally, 3 individual timers are monitored and displayed with the device. Both the hardware and the software used in the design are fully described. / Master of Science

Modélisation d'un système de navigation chirurgicale pour le traitement par radio-fréquences des tumeurs du foie / Development of a Computer Assisted System aimed at RFA Liver Surgery

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment for either hepatocellular carcinoma or metastasis liver carcinoma. In order to resect large lesions, the surgeon has to perform multiple time-consuming destruction cycles and reposition the RFA needle for each of them. The critical step in handling a successful ablation and preventing local recurrence is the correct positioning of the needle. For small tumors, the surgeon places the middle of the active needle tip in the center of the tumor under intra-operative ultrasound guidance. When one application is not enough to cover the entire tumor, the surgeon needs to repeat the treatment after repositioning of the needle, but US guidance is obstructed by the opacity stemming from the first RFA application. In this case the surgeon can only rely on anatomical knowledge and the repositioning of the RFA needle becomes a subjective task limiting the treatment accuracy. We have developed a computer assisted surgery guidance application for this repositioning procedure. Our software application handles the complete process from preoperative image analysis to tool tracking in the operating room.
