Tradição, inovação e sustentabilidade : desafios e perspectivas do projeto sustentável em arquitetura e construção

Isoldi, Rosilaine André January 2007 (has links)
Considering the assumption that the design act should respond to social and conceptual contemporary changes and the new requirements of achieving sustainability, this work studied characteristics and principles of sustainable design in architecture and construction. The hypothesis established by this study was that the combination between tradition and innovation (looking for an alternative technology) can contribute for sustainable design. This was a qualitative and multidisciplinary study and presented a panorama on sustainability in architecture and construction knowledge fields, with updated from the literature added with contributions from the anthropologic sciences and including a case study. The thesis showed that sustainable architecture and construction requires the consideration of many dimensions and the process for their materialization is differentiated, incorporating new variables and presenting many challenges and perspectives. Both, tradition (old knowledge) and innovation (new knowledge) can contribute with lessons and references that break up with the usual practices in architecture and construction and make possible the election of more sustainable alternatives for buildings and human environments, since they are more suited to value social and cultural aspects and the environment, to better exploit local potentialities and supply user’s needs. The thesis findings intend to integrate the accumulated knowledge on the theme, in the expectation that the conclusions, even if restricted to a specific point of view, can be a useful addition to the theory and the practice of sustainable architecture and construction, thus contributing for the creation of more human habitats.

A Comparative Study of Climate Based Design of Building Enclosures

McGlohn, Emily, McGlohn, Emily January 2012 (has links)
This thesis attempts to determine if misconception about vapor retarders and air barrier systems affects building enclosure design and construction. Literature on this subject is continually evolving and often contradictory, supporting confusion. A survey of designers and builders representing four climate zones within the United States was done. Respondents disclosed where they learned about building enclosures and shared how clear or confusing they think the resources are on this subject and also weighed in on a few basic principles about enclosure design. Results show that most building professionals learn about enclosures through experience or a colleague. The internet is the first written resource they use when questions arise. The most significant misconceptions identified are that in some cases vapor retarder placement does not follow accepted building science or code requirements and that a portion of respondents only consider the air barrier system the vertical surfaces of an enclosure.

Arquitetura e sustentabilidade: considerações sobre o desmonte das edificações / Architecture and sustainability: considerations about disassembly of buildings

Letícia França Mattaraia 01 November 2013 (has links)
This paper aims at discussing two important phases of the building: the project design and the end of his life, focusing on sustainable architecture. In the first few idealizations of the building, when it starts the concept and design, it is important to consider the entire life cycle, even dismantling stage or the demolition, as is more common today. Through many demolition waste are generated, most times, are dumped in nature or in landfills without proper treatment, which consequently brings great environmental pollution and waste. Thus this work aims to analyze and evaluate processes demolition or dismantling of buildings to propose guidelines aimed at reducing waste and environmental impact, through a streamlined disassemble, instead of demolition. Initially literature review was performed in order to analyze what is being studied on the subject in Brazil and worldwide. A major theme was the Design for the Disassembly because it is a new subject in the field and of great importance that is being addressed in countries concerned with sustainable development. The literature review is mainly based on Design for Disassembly, Design for \"X\", sustainable development, sustainable architecture, analysis of the life cycle and the cycle of some materials, reuse and recycling, and demolition. For practical analysis, studies were performed in order to evaluate different methods of construction and demolition or dismantling processes, beyond the possibilities of reuse and recycling after the useful life of the buildings. These studies were conducted through direct observation, monitoring of some processes demolition or dismantling works visits, interviews with architects and other professionals involved, and document analysis. Thus it was possible to get various processes and guidelines to assist the application of Design for Disassembly and reduce environmental impacts.

This research analyses the application of the guidelines of industrial ecology and architecture of industrial buildings through its environmental certification. The theoretical-conceptual review focuses on the evolution of this architecture over the industrial revolutions, especially with regard to the design process, to building technologies and the relationship of the building with its surroundings. It also exposes the concept of industrial ecology, its principles, guidelines and application in urban areas, culminating in the performance indicators of buildings present in the process of environmental certification of industrial buildings - Environmental Building Establishment (BREEAM). On the assumption that industrial ecology is a broader concept of sustainability, the method of analysis is based on preparing correlation table between their guidelines, the architectural guidelines and the BREEAM certification. The main objective of this research is to establish guidelines that add the most ecology to industrial building's architecture, contributing to increase sustainability / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Investigating the responses of architectural programmes in South African universitites of technology curricula to sustainable building practices

Ekpo, Christiana Okobi 14 July 2015 (has links)
M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) / Curricular changes in architectural studies are necessary to allow for the incorporation of newer concepts and ideas which will equip graduates with the skills required for contemporary professional practice. This study was carried out to investigate the incorporation of sustainable building (SB) knowledge into the undergraduate curricula of Departments of Architecture at Universities of Technology in South Africa. The study rationale, current status of sustainable building teaching to diploma students, levels of awareness and training in sustainability as well as obstacles to the incorporation of SB into teaching curricula were investigated. A sample size of 8 architecture lecturers and 17 architecture students from three universities of technology, at third year and BTech levels were surveyed using a questionnaire. The third year and BTech classes were chosen for this survey because the researcher assumed that they have more knowledge about curricular structure and content than the junior classes (first and second year). Results showed that architecture departments in all the universities investigated currently teach sustainable building concepts (theory, design and technology) and that there appears to be a fair awareness of sustainability and green building practices among the lecturers and students. However, curricula in these universities were either inadequate or poorly conceptualised. General comments from respondents indicated that much more needs to be done to improve the teaching and learning of SB in the universities surveyed. The study showed that students are not adequately exposed to regular and affordable sustainability-related workshops, seminars, symposiums, excursions and field trips, possibly because of cost implications as these tend to be generally expensive. The findings also revealed among others, that the level of study at which SB is formally introduced to students, the number of lecturers involved, as well as the number of lecture hours for teaching SB, all varied considerably between the institutions. A benchmark exercise with the University of Maryland (UMD) in the USA revealed that structural and conceptual changes have to be made in the curricula and behavioural adjustments among students and lecturers in South African Universities of Technology are necessary to measure up with global trends.

Sustainable Planning and Design for Ecotourism: Ecotecture Embraced by the Essence of Nature on Amboro National Park, Santa Cruz-Bolivia

Gil, Claudia P 01 November 2009 (has links)
The concern for the environment and social aspects have been emphasizing in the concept of ecotourism. Tourism is the world's largest industry. "It accounts for more than 10% of total employment, 11% of global GDP, and total tourist trips are predicted to increase to 1.6 billion by 2020". As such, it has a major and increasing impact on both people and nature. The increase of travels and tourists in the world, has led to the acknowledgement of tourism as part of the emissions of greenhouse gases. Therefore, the framework of sustainable development in tourism has been developed as well as ecotourism. Eco-tourism can be both an effective conservation tool and a successful community development model. Sustainable architecture can be well integrated in a community that will base their knowledge on role model site for the sustainability of a park and village. This thesis is aiming to study and develop a sustainable model for the conflict that exists between architecture and eco-tourism because of current practices and their impact on natural habitat. Inappropriate tourism development and practice can degrade habitats and landscapes, deplete natural resources, and generate waste and pollution. The local community is also in need of a better and healthy living. This has become a social, cultural, and economical issue prevalent for decades since there hasn't been an established relationship between the local community and the tourist. The main investigation into determining factors is on how and why we need the bond between eco-village and eco-tourism. Does it consist of culture and society integration? Or is it nature preservation? What is the new relationship between tourist-community or tourist development design and development of this relationship? Some of the options for research and study is an eco-cabin that will serve as a prototype for ecotourism sustainable technologies and architecture, integrating an eco-village as a model for the local community. A way to approach this issue is through the education of the local people and tourism through sustainable architecture and development. Community knowledge can be increased through environmental sustainable building techniques. Perhaps the community gets involve in the construction process, so they learn how to take care of their surroundings and its stewardship.. In this way the sustainability of well-being of human cultures that inhibit those environments are sustained, and tourists can get engaged through community learning and interaction. Responsible tourism can also promote awareness of and support for the conservation of local culture, creating economic opportunities for countries and communities.
