Mohamed Hassan Abdulaziz who is popularly known as ‘Mkilifi’ is a most renowned scholar in Kiswahili. He passed on on 10th July 2023 at the age of 91 years. His former students Iribe Mwangi and Bitugi Matundura pay homage to Professor Abdulaziz as one of the most celebrated scholars having taught and supervised many Kiswahili students, not only in East Africa but beyond, spanning over five decades. He is best known for his classic book entitled Muyaka: 19th Century Swahili Popular Poetry which was published in 1979. His books and articles in refereed journals on Kiswahili language and literature will remain invaluable reference material for many Kiswahili language and literary scholars now and in the future.
