Historic recovery, urban recovery - a cultural heritage and mediation centre at the Old Synagogue in Pretoria

Naidoo, Shershen 15 October 2012 (has links)
2013 marked the fifty years anniversary of the Treason Trials at the Old Synagogue, in Pretoria, South Africa. The trial was a symbolic victory for the Liberation Movement in their fight against an oppressive apartheid regime. Today, with freedom a reality, Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites have surfaced throughout the country with the purpose of commemorating the multitude of events which occurred on the path to liberation. The purpose of this research is to generate a contextual response to the challenge of commemorating and rejuvenating the currently abandoned Old Synagogue. This study investigates the manner in which Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites are being commemorated. The results will assist heritage practitioners to ascertain whether the current trends in the application of heritage conservation and commemoration strategies make meaningful contributions towards local communities. An empirical research method of visiting Liberation Struggle Heritage Sites in Gauteng was conducted as a means of primary data collection. The findings indicate that these sites display weak accessibility traits, and do not engage with their surrounding context in manner which stimulates socio-economic and political growth. The design project aims to initiate programme as a means of commemorating and rejuvenating the Old Synagogue in a contextually appropriate manner. The prerequisites are that the programme should respect, liberate, and celebrate the history and heritage of the Old Synagogue together with the surrounding buildings of heritage value. The design proposal is a Heritage and Mediation Centre geared towards public utility as a place to gather, learn, and retreat within Pretoria’s historic inner city. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / Unrestricted

Nová sysnagoga Teplice / New synagogue Teplice

Volf, Anna January 2018 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is creating an architectural study of new synagogue and center for Jewish community in Teplice. Main goal was to design a complex used not only for sacral purposes, but also for cultural and educational purposes. The intention itself was an attempt to transform the location, to highlight its specificity and to capture its Genius loci. The proposal is a set of four objects consisting of several completely different units, all intended to create possibilities for harmonious coexistence of the past and the future. The complex includes a new separate synagogue building with three utility floors, which is located on the southern side of the premises. Two other objects are a one-storey administration building and a cultural and educational center, both located in the middle of the area. The building on the northern side of the property houses the premises of a kosher restaurant, a museum and a parking lot. Its roof forms a large square and recreational zone. Due to the large altitude differences of the premises, predominant portion of the facility is designed under the ground.

Nová identita lokality tří synagog ve Velkém Meziříčí / New identity for locality of three synagogues in Velké Meziříčí

Marek, Vojtěch January 2018 (has links)
the Jewish community of Velké Meziříčí has acquired urban and regional significance, which lasted until the middle of the 20th century. Dominant of the Jewish ghetto was a complex of three synagogues originating from different periods. To the present day, two synagogues, the Old Synagogue from 1695 and the New Synagogue built in pseudo-gothic style between 1868-1870 based on August Prokop´s design, have been preserved. The location of the three synagogues is a very unsettled urban whole, which is poorly accessible and creates the atmosphere of a special and inhospitable place. The centerpiece of the site is a new synagogue, which now serves as a Vietnamese marketplace. The aim of the diploma thesis was to restore the values of the cultural area of the three synagogues and to define the new functional use of the buildings in connection with the living urban structure with the insertion of new architectural forms.

The Rabi Yehuda Halevy: The Physical and Conceptual Space of a Sephardic Synagogue in Mexico City

DiSimone, Cori Beth January 2007 (has links)
This thesis analyzes Rabi Yehuda Halevy synagogue, which Victor Babani designed and Francisco Canovas built from 1941 to 1942 in the Colonia Roma Sur of Mexico City. I focus on its formal characteristics, as well as its socio-historical context. I examine late-nineteenth century to mid-twentieth century life for Sephardic Jews in Mexico: their cause for immigration, experience in their new homeland, and relations with other Jewish groups and non-Jews in the city. I explore the use of style and iconography in the synagogue in relation to the history and prior employment of these architectural features. Defining "style" in the Rabi Yehuda Halevy demands an understanding of the employment of a particular formal language in the design of minority groups' architecture. The process of finding a style to portray national identity in Mexico was parallel to the Mexican Sephardim's use of architecture to articulate their own identity in the city.
