Practical Insights into Recurring Issues of Requirements Elicitation : The potential of systems analysis in addressing these issues

Requirements elicitation has been identified by researchers as a highly critical and error-prone phase of IT development projects. Many challenges are rooted in the human and social dimension of this phase, which requires intensive communication activities between stakeholders with different backgrounds and perspectives. The conduct of a systems analysis supports stakeholders in reaching a shared understanding about crucial elements. The aim of this paper is to identify and describe recurring issues in requirements elicitation, and to better understand the potential of systems analysis efforts for addressing these issues. While literature provides plenty of high-level categorizations of requirements elicitation issues most often the argumentation is not complemented with concrete, real-world examples. Therefore five interviews with IT practitioners have been conducted in order to back-up a theoretical framework of problem areas elaborated by Saiedian and Dale (2000) with practical insights. This approach enabled a thorough analysis of four major issues in requirements elicitation covered by this research: Problem Perspective Differences, Resistance, Poor Communication and Articulation/Expertise Problems. Finally, a first linkage between a specific systems analysis method, the Work System Method, and its potential for addressing these problem areas has been established.

Significa a necessidade da compreensão da mudança e da complexidade de um ponto de vista global, uma mudança no modo de pensar. Emerge a necessidade da administração de estruturas sociais e organizacionais cada vez mais complexas. Neste sentido, o Pensamento Sistêmico mostra-se como uma alternativa ao Pensamento Analítico Cartesiano uma vez que o Pensamento Sistêmico propõe o desafio aos modelos mentais que impedem a visão sistêmica e sustentável das soluções. Do mesmo modo, o Design Estratégico, a partir da interpretação da complexidade da realidade, oferece transformações necessárias por meio de sua capacidade de ver (interpretar o contexto), prever (construir cenários) e fazer ver (tornar o conceito concreto) (ZURLO, 2010). Sua atuação é evidenciada por uma lógica de fazer, aplicando um olhar do todo e conduzindo o processo até as etapas mais tangíveis da execução. Observar contextos, antecipar mudanças e visualizar cenários são perspectivas de atuação que encontram relação entre as dimensões do Design Estratégico e do Método Sistêmico. Neste sentido, a presente pesquisa buscou compreender de que forma o Design Estratégico pode contribuir com o Método Sistêmico na construção de cenários para a resolução de problemas complexos. Os subsídios empíricos e conceituais da pesquisa-ação foram obtidos com base na revisão bibliográfica, workshops aplicados em uma organização do terceiro setor, observação participante e entrevistas realizadas. Como resultado, propõe-se um ensaio metodológico preliminar que contempla conceitos, princípios e instrumentos voltados ao estímulo da colaboração, criatividade, inovação e visualidade através da introdução de ambientes e dados externos ao problema, da Pesquisa Blue Sky, do contrabriefing e de recursos visuais. / Social, technological, economic and cultural transformations constitute a process of changing perceived in society as a whole. It means the need for understanding of change and complexity of a global point of view, a change in thinking (ACKOFF, 1981). It emerges the need to manage social and organizational structures increasingly complex. In this sense, the Systemic Thinking shows itself as an alternative to the Cartesian Analytical Thinking proposes to challenge the mental models that prevent the systemic and sustainable vision of the solutions. Likewise, the Strategic Design, from the interpretation of the reality complexity, offers the necessary changes through its ability to see (interpret the context), to foresee (build scenarios), and top view (make the concept concrete). (ZURLO, 2010). Its performance is evidenced by logic of making, applying a look on the whole and leading the process to the most tangible stages of the execution. Observe contexts, anticipate changes and visualize scenarios are performance perspectives that find relationship between the dimensions of the Strategic Design and the System Method. In this regard, the study aims to understand how the Strategic Design can contribute to the System Method in building scenarios for complex problems solution. The empirical and conceptual subsidies of the action-research were obtained from the literature review, workshops application in a third sector organization, participant observation and interviews. As a result, it is proposed a preliminary methodological essay that contemplates concepts, principles and instruments that aim the collaboration stimulus, creativity, innovation and visuality through the introduction of environments and data that are external to the problem, Blue Sky Research, counter briefing and visual resources.

Esta dinâmica inicia por um diagnóstico modelando, ou não, os processos de negócios para entendimento da situação atual. Entretanto, tais abordagens usualmente não consideram a circularidade das inter-relações subjacentes dos sistemas da organização e como estas conexões afetam os sistemas entre si. Sob o paradigma da melhoria dos processos de negócios, pensar em mudanças sem pensar nos elementos inerentes a percepção humana pode favorecer a tomada de decisões no presente que possivelmente originam problemas inesperados no futuro, interferindo nos processos de negócios como um todo. Assim, esta pesquisa tem por objetivo propor uma abordagem para entender sistemicamente os processos de negócios através da integração entre a Engenharia de Processos de Negócios (EPN) e o Pensamento Sistêmico (PS). Para tal foram combinados os conceitos de tais áreas relativos aos objetivos da pesquisa com o Método Sistêmico. Uma abordagem inicial foi estruturada e aplicada em estudo de caso exploratório com única unidade de análise. A partir da avaliação empírica a abordagem foi refinada, tratando-se, portanto de uma pesquisa de natureza aplicada e com abordagem qualitativa. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam evidências de que a combinação entre PS e EPN pode contribuir para melhor entendimento dos processos de negócios. / From the perspective of business processes, the companies invest in innovations and improvements, where usually established approaches are applied. This dynamic starts by a diagnostic modeling, or not, the business processes for understanding the current situation. However, such approaches usually do not consider the circularity of the interrelationships of the systems of the organization and how these connections affect the systems between systems. Regarding the paradigm of Business Process Improvement, think of changes without thinking in the elements inherent to human perception can facilitate the decision-making in these possibly present to unexpected problems in the future, interfering in business processes as a whole. Thus, this research aims to propose an approach to systemically understand business processes through the integration between the Business Process Engineering (BPE) and Systems Thinking. Then were combined the concepts of such areas concerning the aims of research with the Systems Method. An initial approach was structured and applied in exploratory case study with single unit of analysis. From the empirical evaluation approach was refined in the case, so a search of applied nature and qualitative approach. The search results are evidence that the combination between BPE and ST can contribute to better understanding of business processes.
