OSS: An Optical System Simulator

The Optical System Simulator (OSS) provides a comprehensive platform for the analysis and design of isolated optical devices and entire optical systems, with special focus on semiconductor lasers and system exhibiting fast dynamics. The OSS is able to simulate "1-D" (or fundamental mode) optical devices, such as ideal optical sources, narrow stripe semiconductor lasers, wave-guides, passive cavities, mirrors, beam splitters, etc. These individual elements can be combined to form into complex optical systems. Once the optical system is defined, the user can interact with the simulation interactively using a set of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). These provide a visual representation of user-defined sensor outputs, and allow on-the-fly modification of system parameters, in a manner similar to that of an experimental setup. Additionally, the user can use the simulator in a background mode, with no user interfaces required, allowing very long simulations that can run unattended for hours or days. The users may reattach the GUIs at any time to monitor the simulation progress or to modify system parameters. The OSS provides a unique software simulation environment for teaching, research and design of broadband integrated optical and opto-electronic systems, where several Terahertz of optical bandwidth needs to be resolved, from femtoseconds to milliseconds time scales.

Development of overcurrent relay model and power system simulator using National Instruments devices in real-time

One of the major objectives at Mississippi State University’s Power and Energy Research Laboratory (PERL) is to develop an adaptive protective controller for Shipboard Power System (SPS) protection. This thesis work focuses on developing an overcurrent relay model in LabVIEW software and validating the developed model by conducting Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) tests with Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) and commercial Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)-351S directional over-current relay. Simulation results show that the developed relay model is quite flexible, efficient and can be used in real-time. Modeling efforts to establish a HIL platform using National Instruments devices have been presented here. This thesis work also proposes a high-performance and low-cost National Instruments-PXI platform for power system simulations. Two-bus, eight-bus and shipboard power system (SPS) test cases are developed using Matlab/Simulink.Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) tests are conducted for these test cases with Matlab/Simulink overcurrent relay model for several fault conditions. To determine the performance of the NI-PXI system, open loop tests are done between the NI-PXI and the SEL-351S relay and these results are compared with the results of open loop test conducted between the RTDS and SEL-351S relay. HIL tests are done between the NI-PXI system and the dSPACE relay model. HIL tests are also done between the NI-PXI and the commercial SEL-351S relay. These results show that the NI-PXI controller can be used as a power system simulator.

Wave-Pipelined Multiplexed (WPM) Routing for Gigascale Integration (GSI)

The main objective of this research is to develop a pervasive wire sharing technique that can be easily applied across the entire range of on-chip interconnects in a very large scale integration (VLSI) system. A wave-pipelined multiplexed (WPM) routing technique that can be applied both intra-macrocell and inter-macrocell interconnects is proposed in this thesis. It is shown that an extensive application of the WPM routing technique can provide significant advantages in terms of area, power and performance. In order to study the WPM routing technique, a hierarchical approach is adopted. A circuit-level, system-level and physical-level analysis is completed to explore the limits and opportunities to apply WPM routing to current VLSI and future gigascale integration (GSI) systems. Design, verification and optimization of the WPM circuit and measurement of its tolerance to external noise constitute the circuit-level analysis. The physical-level study involves designing wire sharing-aware placement algorithms to maximize the advantages of WPM routing. A system-level simulator that designs the entire multilevel interconnect network is developed to perform the system-level analysis. The effect of WPM routing on a full-custom interconnect network and a semi-custom interconnect network is studied.

En del av en Audioanalystor har blivit utveckladoch implementerad som en applikation i det hårdvarubeskrivande språket VHDL. Denna del har sedan programmerats in i en PLD-krets på ett kretskort som används i audiotester för mobiltelefoner på Flextronics. Applikationen konverterar data så att det ska gå att skicka information mellan telefonen och olika mätinstrument. Applikationen består av två äldre applikationer. Av dessa två har en blivit helt implementerad. I den andra kvarstår att finna orsaken till varför den ger ifrån sig felaktigt data i form av oönskat brus. Arbetet avbröts p.g.a. slutdatum. A part of an audio analyzer has been developed and implemented as an application in the hardware description language VHDL. This part has later been programmed into a PLD device on a circuit board used for audio tests on mobile telephones at Flextronics. The application converts data, making it possible to send information between the telephone and different measuring instruments. The application consists of two older applications. One of them has been fully implemented. What is left in the other part is to find the cause why it is sending wrong data as unwanted noise. This thesis describes an assessment of offshore wind farms using a Matlab tool Marine System simulator. This tool helps to analyse the Vessel motion according to different wave heights. From this assessment one can know the correct weather window for offshore operation and other possible techniques to reduce the time delay in operation. This tool is used to simulate a supply vessel motion according to different wave heights. The chosen supply vessel is the default supply vessel in the simulator.
