Investigation in Engineering Leadership Using System Engineering and Virtual Reality

Davis, Charles 01 January 2020 (has links) (PDF)
System Engineering can help derive requirements and specifications to build virtual environments which are good to test behaviors and attitudes. Virtual simulations can have a strong impact because role-playing facilitates active learning, permits the acceptance of new concepts, and generates increased interest, enthusiasm, and motivation. Research over the last 50 years has shown that reasoning with and about context is an essential aspect of human cognition, permeating language, memory, and reasoning capabilities. This integral process is developed over a lifetime through experiential learning. In this research, we utilize systems engineering to capture guidelines from psychologist and concepts of technological leadership. These guidelines are converted in requirements and technical specifications (using SySML) of virtual simulation environments (built in OpenSim). Then, this virtual simulation environments are used to test subjects and see the potential changes in leadership skills. The research is a promising step in the test of attitudes and leadership in STEM environments.

Risk Abuse in the Enterprise

White, Chad R. 01 April 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Risk Management and, more specifically, risk "abuse" in aerospace programs are examined. The value of each risk item considered in a program is directly linked to the ability to reduce wasted effort and time. The working hypothesis of this thesis is that not all risk items are formally reported and/or followed through the formal risk process. It is also believed that risk levels are often under or overestimated. This results in an improper monitoring of the health of the program, and potential hidden costs to the customer. Corrective actions are recommended. This study has been performed as a part of a larger effort conducted by the Lean Aerospace Initiative. The present student studied risk abuse at a large aerospace company and teamed with a PhD candidate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who studied Risk Management in the Enterprise Organization.

Alkahtani, Eman 01 October 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the document is to specify step-by-step directions through the development lifecycle of E-tutor. The document contains all the fundamental requirements to build the system in order to begin the implementation process. Furthermore, the document includes an analysis of alternative solutions, system architecture and the applying of lean thinking into the development. Prototypes and final document will be built according to this document. Any changes will be documented as subsequent versions of the document.

HANDY KSA: A Home Maintenance Solution for Saudi Arabia

Alasmi, Maram 01 January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The goal of this project is to improve the process of finding and hiring high-quality maintenance workers for the people of Saudi Arabia. This will be achieved through an interactive application that can be accessed via smart phone. The application named HANDY KSA-will address the lack of organization and transparency in the home services field. HANDY KSA will curate the entire maintenance experience, from searching for workers to settling the bill. The app will allow users to search for nearby maintenance workers, view their qualifications, and read customer reviews before choosing someone to hire. Users will also be able to pay for services through the application, which protects users from financial impropriety. HANDY KSA will benefit Saudi residents, as well as Saudi workers. It will provide residents easy access to the highest quality workers in their area. Saudi workers who post their services on the app will benefit from increased visibility, likely leading to increased customer volume.

Oppression of Women in the Islamic World and Gender Inequality in Saudi Arabia

AlMofawez, Meshail 01 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is considered an advanced, developed, and industrialized nation. It is the only Arab nation that is a member of the G20, a group from the world's top 20 industrialized nations. Despite economic advancement, social progress has been stagnant. Saudi women do not enjoy equal rights to men, and gender-based discrimination and mistreatment is integrated into KSA's social, political and economic systems. KSA is the only country in the world which bans women from driving. Additionally, KSA's laws reinforce subservient status of women, such as the "male guardian" legal requirement, which deprives women of autonomy in personal decisions, including the freedom to travel without the company of a man. On the other hand, Saudi women have high literacy rates and education levels by international comparison - more than 57% of Saudi women possess a college degree. In stark contrast, female labor participation rates are among the lowest of any developed nation. There is a glimmer of hope that society is making progress. In 2011, King Abdullah granted women the right to vote and take part in local politics as of the year 2015. This project aims to build momentum and capitalize on KSA's recent societal progress by proposing a comprehensive solution using a system's approach to address gender inequity and women's rights issues in the KSA labor market. Systems Engineering (SE) guides this project's stages and activities. This starts with exploratory research, then defines the problem, identifies key stakeholders and documents requirements. This information will provide the basis for the system concept solution's requirements and architecture. The result of this project is a proposed system solution - a comprehensive program implemented and operated by the KSA government, which has undergone verification and validation to ensure that this system is both "built right" and that "the right system was built."

Implementing Health Information Exchange System: Saudi Arabia

Almalohi, Mussaad 01 April 2015 (has links) (PDF)
In Saudi Arabia, medical errors are at an alarming level. Lack of a Health Information Exchange (HIE) system is one the greatest reasons for medical errors in the Kingdom. Health care in many countries has evolved with the invention of electronic health information exchange system, henceforth HIE. This research paper purposes to implement HIE in Saudi Arabia, which entirely does not have a system of the sort. It is imperative instill HIE in the health care system in Saudi to allow physicians, nurses, health care facilities as well as patients to electronically share medical information in a safe and secure manner. Many countries such as United States, New Zealand and Germany have had great success with the HIE system and have reported vast benefits. Benefits of HIE are such as reduction of health care cost as well as decreasing medical errors. For Saudi Arabia to reach the same heights, many stakeholders will be involved in the triumph of the HIE system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The biggest contributor will be the Ministry of Health, which will be in charge of implementing as well as making the system mandatory in the main four hospitals in the country: Shomasy, Kind Saud University Hospital, Ministry of interior Hospital and Ministry of Defense Hospital. Each hospital having their own current medical information recording system, will now have one universal system that is made sure to be secure and safe for patients as well as other participating organizations who have access to the HIE system. The main concentration of the HIE system in Saudi Arabia will be in the emergency care of these four hospitals. It is crucial to have an organized and controlled way of recording as well as accessing patient medical records electronically, in a fast and effective way. This paper proposes that an HIE system in Saudi Arabia will reduce the cost of medical care and decrease medical errors. Through the use of Lean thinking and the use of quality tools, the HIE system will be able to change and increase the reliably as well as effectiveness of Urgent Care in the country and therefore have consequent benefits as well. Also, understanding who is going to play a great role in the triumph of the HIE system, such as the Ministry of Health and knowing what stakeholders will need to be affiliated and contribute will lead the project to a better success.
