A Reproducible Method to Assess Aligner Thickness Effect on Force OutputBarbieri, Damon January 2011 (has links)
The relationship between applied force and aligner thickness is poorly understood. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to: 1) Evaluate the effect of initial material thickness on force output of clear aligners; and 2) Recommend a consistent, repeatable method for measuring aligner cross-section and distribution. A total of 40 clear aligners were fabricated over stereolithographic (SLA) models with ideal dentition, using proprietary gRxh material in four different thicknesses: (10) Rx15 [0.015h], (10) Rx20 [0.020h], (10) Rx30 [0.030h], (10) Rx40 [0.040h]. For measuring initial force output when tipping a tooth, a custom-made force measurement apparatus (FMA) was used with the upper right central incisor translated facially 0.25 mm. All six components of force and torque were measured (Fx, Fy, Fz, Tx, Ty, Tz) over a 16 second period of time upon seating each aligner. After gathering FMA data, cross-section and distribution of aligner material thickness was then measured using three methods for comparison: hall effect transduction, computed tomography (CT) scanning, and cross-sectional analysis under a stereomicroscope. All measurements were taken along the mid-sagittal plane of the facial surface of the upper right central incisor. Force output and variability both generally increased with an increase in material thickness. The range of measured forces were 3.5 to 28 times higher than ideal tipping forces reported by Proffit. The results for lingual force correlated well with those of total force (ã(Fx)2 + (Fy)2 + (Fz)2). As for the thickness measurement results, the hall effect transducer (HET) data correlated well with that of the CT scan. The stereomicroscope produced values that were relatively elevated. Mean measurements taken with both HET and CT consistently got smaller when moving from occlusal to middle to gingival points. The same trend was noted with the stereomicroscope, but with less consistency. The thinner Rx15 material appeared best suited for lingual tipping of a maxillary central incisor in vitro. The hall effect transducer produced simple measurements that were extremely similar to those from the CT scan, and appears to be a suitable stand-in for the more expensive and labor intensive CT scanning process. / Oral Biology

Many problems in geometric measure theory are centered around finding conditions and structures on a set to guarantee that its distance set must be large. Two notions of structure that are of importance in this work are Hausdorff dimension and thickness. Recent progress has been made on generalizing the notion of thickness so part of this work also generalizes previous results using this new upgraded version of thickness. We also show why a famous conjecture about distance sets does not hold on the real line and thus, why this conjecture needs to happen in higher dimensions. Furthermore, we give explicit distance set and thickness calculations for a special class of self-similar sets. / Master of Science / Part of the study of geometric measure theory is centered around creating interesting structures to place on a set and determining what sort of threshold on that structure allows you to guarantee that some interesting geometric property exists for that set. An example of this is determining when you can guarantee that a set contains many unique distances between elements in that set. This work presents various types of structures that help to investigate the problem of when you can guarantee that a set has the previously mentioned geometric property.

The key to improving drying quality and reducing drying time and energy consumption lies in understanding and controlling moisture movement during drying. As wood dries, strains and stresses develop as a result of restraints imposed by moisture gradients and differential shrinkage in wood. So accurately measuring the moisture gradient in wood during drying will be helpful to improving drying quality.
In this project, moisture gradients in red oak will be measured through four different techniques----<i><b>bandsaw slicing, Forstner bit layering, flaking and razor blade slicing</i></b>. The first two techniques are found in the literature. The last two are developed in this study. The results obtained with these four techniques were compared, and it was found that the newly developed techniques could get moisture gradients that were closer to the true value.
The <i><b>thickness</i></b> of the slice was assumed to affect measuring the moisture gradient because of the environmental influences. So a thickness series was tested with the two new technique----flaking and razor blade slicing. The results showed that there was no slice or flake thickness effect on the moisture gradients.And an optimum slice and flake thickness was determined for the wood industries and research studies.
Finally, the <i><b>directional</i></b> effect on transverse moisture movement during kiln drying was examined through measuring moisture gradients in the tangential and radial directions of wood. The results showed that moisture moved slightly faster in the radial direction than in the tangential direction during kiln drying and the moisture gradients in the tangential direction were slightly steeper than those in the radial direction. / Master of Science

the piston ring and cylinder wall of a fired gasoline engine via a small optical window mounted in the
cylinder wall. A fluorescent dye was added to the lubricant in the sump to allow the lubricant to
fluoresce when absorbing laser radiation. The concentration of the dye did not disturb the lubricant
chemistry or its performance. Degraded engine oil samples were used to investigate the influence of
lubricant quality on ring pack lubricant film thickness measurements. The results show significant
differences in the lubricant film thickness profiles for the ring pack when the lubricant degrades which
will affect ring pack friction and ultimately fuel economy.

No / The purpose of our study was to compare the effectiveness of 3.2 mm, 5 mm and 7.5 mm slice thicknesses in the detection and characterisation of liver lesions found on CT in patients with known or suspected malignant disease. 110 patients underwent portal phase imaging using four-slice MDCT. Two blinded observers independently read hard copy images at each slice thickness. The size and location of each lesion detected was recorded by each observer on a diagram of liver segmental anatomy. Each lesion was characterised as benign, malignant or indeterminate in nature. A diagnostic confidence score was allocated for each lesion on a scale of 1-4. The pathology or behaviour of lesions was assessed using surgery with intra-operative ultrasound (IOUS) and histology, or interval imaging with MRI, CT, or sonography. 294 lesions were detected, 64 (22%) of which were malignant. Both observers detected significantly more lesions on the 3.2 mm versus 7.5 mm slice thickness (p < 0.0001). Both observers detected more malignant lesions on 3.2 mm and 5 mm slice thicknesses versus 7.5 mm. As slice thickness decreased there was a significant increase in the sensitivity of malignant lesion detection for observer 1 (p < 0.001) and borderline significance for observer 2 (p = 0.07). As slice thickness decreased the proportion of lesions characterised as indeterminate by both observers fell. With thinner slices, both detection and characterisation of liver lesions were improved. A slice thickness no greater than 5 mm should be used to maximise both detection and correct characterisation of liver lesions.

A series of studies was designed to examine different aspects of non-surgical corneal reshaping for myopic and hyperopic corrections, including the efficacy and stability of this procedure, the effect of the lens material characteristics (Dk/t), and the corneal or superficial structural change (e. g. corneal/epithelial thickness) in corneal reshaping. <br /> <strong>Methods:</strong> In the CRT® for myopia (CRT1) study, 20 myopes wore CRT® lenses on one eye and control lenses on the contralateral eye (eye randomized) for one night while sleeping. Corneal topography and refractive error were measured the night prior to lens insertion, immediately after lens removal on the following morning and at 20 and 60 minutes and 3, 6 and 12 hours later. In the CRT® for hyperopia (CRTH) study, 20 ametropes wore CRT®H lenses on one eye for one night while sleeping, the contralateral eye (no lens wear) served as control (eye randomized). Corneal topography, aberrations and refractive error were measured the night prior to lens insertion, immediately after lens removal on the following morning and at 1 and 3, 6, 12 and 28 hours later. In the relatively long term (4 weeks) CRT® for myopia (CRT2) study, 23 myopes wore CRT® lenses overnight and removed their lenses on awakening. Visual Acuity (VA), subjective vision, refractive error, aberrations, and corneal topography were measured at baseline, immediately after lens removal on the first day and 14 hours later, and these measurements were repeated on days 4, 10, and 28. The treatment zone size was demarcated by the change in corneal curvature from negative to positive and vice versa, using tangential difference maps from the corneal topographer. In the study of effects of Dk/t on CRT® for myopia (CRTHDK), 20 myopic subjects were fit with Menicon Z (MZ) lenses (Dk/t=90. 6, Paragon CRT®) on one eye and an Equalens II (EII) CRT® lenses (Dk/t=47. 2) on the contralateral eye (eye randomized). Corneal topography, refractive error and aberrations were measured before lens insertion (baseline), and the following day after overnight lens wear, on lens removal and 1, 3, 6, 12 hours later. In the study of short term effects of CRT® for myopia and hyperopia (STOK), 20 ametropes wore CRT® and CRT®H lenses in a random order on one eye (randomly selected). The lenses were worn for 15, 30 and 60 minutes (randomly ordered, with each period taking place on a different day). Refractive error, aberrations, corneal topography, and corneal/epithelial thickness (using OCT) were measured before and after lens wear. The measurements were performed on the control eyes at 60 minutes only. <br /> <strong>Results:</strong> In the CRT1 study, after one night of CRT® for myopia, the central cornea flattened and the mid-periphery steepened, and myopia reduced. In the CRTH study, after one night of CRT® for hyperopia, the central cornea steepened and the para-central region flattened, myopia was induced or hyperopia was reduced, all aberrations except for the astigmatism increased and signed spherical aberration (SA) shifted from positive to negative. In the CRT2 study, after 4 weeks of CRT® lens wear, in general, the treatment zones stabilized by day 10, vision improved, myopia diminished, total aberration and defocus decreased and higher order aberrations (HOAs) including coma and SA increased. <p> A thin film thickness monitor has been designed and constructed based on the "mass loading" effect of a resonant quartz crystal. A 6.0 MHz Y-cut crystal, having a theoretical "mass determination sensitivity" of 8.15x10^7 Hz. - cm^2/gm, serves as the sensor element. This sensitivity can be closely approached in practice if the entire active area of the quartz plate is exposed to the evaporant stream. However, due to source, substrate and crystal geometry the "effective" sensitivity of the monitor is only 0.433 of the above value. </p> <p> Both film thickness and deposition rate can be measured by the monitor in terms of equivalent frequency changes. The actual thickness and rates depend upon the density of the evaporant. In the case of silver (density 10.5 gm/cm^3), the monitor measures average thicknesses from several (oA) to 1.36 microns in one single deposition. Each crystal can be used to monitor a total of 4.5 microns of silver before replacement. Deposition rates for silver can be measured from as low as 0.l (oA)/sec to 1360 (oA)/sec. </p> <p> By combining the thickness monitor with apparatus for controlled evaporation, a system was set up which can control film thickness to within 2% and deposition rate to within 5%. </p> / Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)
