Score and hide-thickness, together with tick burden and body condition score, in four cattle breeds in the South-eastern Free State province of South Africa

Published Article / A study was conducted to determine the differences between four breeds in respect of coat score, hide-thickness, tick burden and body condition score. The study was comprised of 40 heifers - 10 of each breed, namely Afrikaner, Braford, Charolais and Drakensberger. A subjective system of coat scoring, ranging from extremely short to very woolly, was used. Body condition score was measured subjectively, with 1 being emaciated and 9 being obese. Hide-thickness (in mm) and tick count were also determined. Between August 2007 and early March 2008, measurements were carried out on the same 10 animals of each breed, with highly significant differences in body condition score, hide-thickness and tick count being observed between the breeds in all instances. Coat scores differed significantly between breeds in the earlier and latter stages of the study becoming less significant midway through. A significant difference in body condition score within breeds was also found, while hide-thickness did not differ significantly within breeds.

Design and Crash Analysis of Ladder Chassis

A chassis is known as the carrying unit of an automobile, like the engine, transmission shaft and other parts are mounted on it. Ladder chassis has longitudinal rails which are connected along the length with crossmembers through welding or mechanical fasteners. Rectangular box section is chosen for the longitudinal rails of ladder chassis. Design modifications are done in HyperMesh to improve torsional and bending stiffness of the chassis designed in steel and CFRP. Adding of the X- bracing cross-member and ribs are few of the techniques used to provide strength to chassis. This thesis aims to produce a light-weight chassis. A combination chassis of both steel and CFRP components is created by replacing heavy steel cross-members with CFRP cross-members, which resulted in the reduction of weight by 14.6%. Crash analysis is performed to all the chassis using Radioss. Depending on the result obtained from crash analysis and values of torsional and bending stiffness, the combination chassis is selected. Thickness optimization is performed to the combination chassis. It is observed that 7.91% of weight is further reduced in the combination chassis.

Independent relationship between 24-hour blood pressure and carotid intima-media thickness

Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand in fulfillment of the Master of Science in Medicine in the School of Physiology / Introduction: The changing socio-economic landscape in Africa has brought with it unique health challenges previously uncommon in people of African ancestry. Noncommunicable diseases such as coronary artery disease and stroke have emerged as pressing public health concern highlighting the need to find more on-target diagnostic tools as well as therapeutic interventions. Although ambulatory blood pressure (AMBP) has in many studies conducted in the western world proved to be an independent predictor of carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT), such results cannot outright be imputed to people of African ancestry living in Africa. That is because people of African ancestry living in Africa are not only of a different ethnicity but are still in the early phases of an epidemiological transition while people in the western countries who are mostly Caucasians, are believed to be in the middle to late phases of an epidemiological transition. Methods: The relationship between the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (SonoCalcTM IMT version 3.4) and AMBP (Space labs model 90207) was determined in 320 randomly selected participants of African descent living in an urban developing community in South Africa. Relationships were determined after adjustment for (clinic blood pressure) BPc, age, gender, alcohol and tobacco use, the presence or absence of diabetes mellitus or inappropriate blood glucose control measured by glycated hemoglobin (ghb), antihypertensive therapy and menopausal status. III Results: Mean age for the study population was 43.7± 16.0 years. Both BPc and AMBP parameters were strongly associated with C-IMT (p<0.001) in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis with BPc. and AMBP entered into separate models and after adjusting for cofounders, BPc. and AMBP maintained significant associations with CIMT. [BPc (partial r=0.0648, p< 0.1612), systolic blood pressure 24 (SBP24) (partial r= 0.236, p< 0.001), systolic blood pressure day (SBPd) (partial r= 0.302, p<0.05), systolic blood pressure night (SBPn) (partial r= 0.0983, p<0.05)]. When adjustments were made with BPc. and SBP24 entered into the same model, BPc lost its association with C-IMT, [SBP24 (partial r=0.236, p<0.001) SBPd (partial r=0.149, p<0.05), SBPn (partial r=0.172, p<0.05)]. Importantly the relationship between SBP24 and C-IMT persisted independent of body mass index (BMI), BPc and age. SBP24 had the highest significant association with C-IMT. Conclusion: SBP24 independently predicts C-IMT even in a model that includes conventional systolic blood pressure (SBPc) leading to the conclusion that AMBP is a more effective tool at diagnosing C-IMT alterations while BPcdoes not have an independent relationship C-IMT.

L’objectif de ce travail était d’étudier certains aspects de la géométrie ou macroarchitecture afin de mieux comprendre la contribution de la géométrie sur le risque de fracture. Pour les os tubulaires, l’apposition périostée tente de compenser la perte osseuse après la ménopause et il existe peu d’études pour les vertèbres. Dans une étude prospective, les dimensions des corps vertébraux augmentent significativement à 3 ans chez les femmes ménopausées ostéoporotiques et que cette augmentation est fortement associée à la taille initiale des os suggérant que les os plus grands ont besoin d’une expansion périostée plus importante pour maintenir la résistance osseuse. Des études antérieures ont suggéré qu’il fallait évaluer la géométrie du rachis dans sa globalité en étudiant le rôle des courbures rachidiennes. Dans une deuxième étude prospective de 3 ans chez des femmes ménopausées ostéoporotiques, la cyphose thoracique est un facteur de risque de fractures vertébrales même après ajustement sur la présence de fractures vertébrales prévalentes. Une troisième étude prospective qui a cherché à identifier les paramètres géométriques associés au risque de fracture de hanche chez les femmes ménopausées ostéoporotiques non traitées montre que l’épaisseur corticale fémorale mesurée par l’outil HSA (Hip Structural Analysis) améliore la prédiction du risque de fracture de hanche indépendamment de la mesure de la densité minérale osseuse (DMO). L’outil géométrique que nous avons développé pour s’affranchir de l’influence de la DMO montre que l’augmentation de la distance intertrochantérienne est associée à une augmentation du risque de fracture indépendamment de la DMO. En revanche l’outil actuel est peu reproductible pour la mesure de la corticale fémorale. / The aim of the study was to study certain aspects of bone geometry or macroarchitecture to understand better the contribution of bone geometry on the risk of fracture. For tubular bones, periosteal apposition can occur to compensate bone loss after the menopause and there is no data concerning the prospective changes in vertebral body dimensions. In a prospective study of women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, vertebral body dimensions increase over 3 years in women and the bigger bones need more periosteal expansion to maintain bone strength. Previous studies showed that whole spine geometry and especially the spinal curvatures need be evaluated to understand the role of vertebral geometry on the risk of fracture. In a second prospective study in postmenopausal osteoporotic women, thoracic kyphosis is a risk factor for vertebral fractures over 3 years, even after adjusting on presence of prevalent fractures. A third prospective study aimed at identifying the geometric parameters associated with an increase risk of hip fracture in postmenopausal osteoporotic women untreated. Femoral cortical thickness measured by HSA tool (Hip Structural Analysis) is associated with an increase risk of hip fracture, independently of bone mineral density (BMD). The geometrical tool which we developed to eliminate the influence of the BMD shows that increase in the intertrochanteric distance is associated with an increase risk of hip fracture.

Rubber friction on ice : investigation of frictional heating and melt water film thickness

Friction on ice is important for many different fields such as winter sports and vehicle traction. In vehicle handling, maximising the friction coefficient between tyres and the ice surface is key to safety. The friction coefficient between tyre rubber and ice has been observed to be as high as unity at low temperatures and as little as 0.05 close to the ice melting temperature. The observed low friction is due to thin water films generated through frictional heating. Little is known about the formation and behaviour of this fluid film and its thickness has been difficult to measure. Previous attempts included techniques such as capacitance, conductivity and fluorescence spectroscopy, however results have been inconsistent. The primary aim of this study was to develop a measurement technique for this lubricating layer, establishing its thickness and the conditions under which its presence results in low friction. This was done by designing a micro-scale linear tribometer (microtribometer) to measure the friction coefficient (μ) on ice under a microscope. Clear ice, and ice with fluorescent particles of various sizes were created. The two ice types were then joined and tested on. During a friction test on the microtribometer, the particles displaced in the direction of sliding due to melt water presence. Images of the ice surface were taken before and after a friction measurement was made, and the amount of particle movement was assessed. The size and displacement of particles were correlated to the range of melt water thickness for a given sliding condition. This study is the first direct measurement method for the melt water layer on ice. Frictional heating is generated through the physical contact of rubber and ice asperities. By conducting friction measurements with rubbers of varying shear modulus (G*) and surface roughness (Ra) on both the microtribometer and on our large–scale tribometer, FRIMA, analysis of the contact can be made over a range of length scales. Further insight into the interfacial effects was provided by surface roughness measurements of both ice and rubber before and ice after microtribometer tests and in FRIMA. Finally, the use of differential interference contrast in reflected light microscopy with ice friction measurements provided visual evidence of the melt water presence. It was found that the melt water thickness based on particle displacement was between 0.1 to 2μm, for a velocity of 4.3 ⇥ 10−4 ms−1 and 0.5MPa nominal load, between –6°C to 0°C. A decreasing film thickness was found with decreasing temperature and the friction coefficient increased with decreasing temperature. At higher temperatures, the differences between the rubbers on both FRIMA and the microtribometer were found to be negligible because of the lubricating layer. Increasing the rubber surface roughness was found to increase at high and decrease friction significantly at low temperatures. These phenomena can be explained by the decreasing amount of solid-solid contact. A simple analytical approach to interpret the results suggests that the rubber compresses significantly and the surface roughness is smoothened upon contact with ice. Furthermore, simple hydrodynamic shear calculations show that pure liquid shear is insufficient to account for the measured low μ values close to melting temperatures. The combined effect of the increasing melt water presence reducing the real contact area and the significant deformation of the rubber asperities failing to compensate for this reduced contact area can account for the results. It is anticipated that these results provide direction for finding ways to improve solid-solid contact between rubber and ice, as there is some viscoelastic dissipation even at conditions close to the melting temperature. Some topics for example are: improving the thermal conductivity of tyre compounds or further investigating the surface roughness of rubber and ice separately and with the thin liquid film in between.

Facing the past : in vivo facial soft tissue depths of a modern adult population from Germany

Forensic facial reconstruction may be the final option available to draw the public attention in cases where the identity of an individual cannot be established by standard identification methods. Two fundamental components of all forensic facial reconstruction techniques are cranial morphology and soft tissue depths databases. The purpose of this study was to extend such databases by providing a complete set of accurate facial soft tissue thickness measurements, acquired from a contemporary adult population from Germany, for use in forensic facial reconstruction. The aims were to measure the distance between well-defined landmarks on the skull and reference points on the face in a standardised manner, to analyse how sex, age and body mass index (BMI) influence facial soft tissue depths, to identify patterns of facial asymmetry, and to conduct a comparative analysis with other populations. The material for this study consisted of 320 (160 male, 160 female) anonymised multi-slice computerised tomography (MSCT) scans of individuals drawn from a German population. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 84 years were analysed. Their statures varied between 1.50 m and 1.96 m; their weights ranged between 40 kg and 145 kg. The BMI fluctuated between 16.6 kg/m2 and 45.8 kg/m2. Patients with severe trauma or pathologies that may compromise facial soft tissue depth were excluded from the study as were patients known to have been treated with specific medication (e.g. cortisone). In Amira®, 3D models of the surfaces of the skull and the facial skin were semi-automatically segmented using previously calculated thresholds and surface extraction algorithms. The parameters were adjusted to permit semi-transparent visualisation and examination of the structures of both the 3D skull and facial skin surface models simultaneously. Facial soft tissue depth was measured at 10 midline and 28 bilateral anatomical landmarks, according to the main orientations of the skull. Statistical analyses and tests were performed with SPSS® Version 22 and TDStats Version v2015.1. The analysis of facial soft tissue thickness versus BMI, sex and age, for each landmark separately, indicated that, at a number of the landmarks, facial soft tissue depth is significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by all three biometric variables. Facial soft tissue thickness increased with increasing BMI, but the correlations with age were insignificant. The differences between males and females were statistically significant (p < 0.05) for almost all anatomical landmarks with the exception of a few in the region of the nasal root and orbitals. Asymmetry was noted at over half of the bilateral landmarks. The differences between the results from this sample and those obtained from comparable databases contradict the hypothesis that population-specificity significantly influences facial soft tissue thickness. Nevertheless, this and future studies of craniofacial soft tissues will improve our knowledge of the complexity of the human face. The information gathered will be invaluable when considering forensic facial reconstruction methods for neighbouring populations.

Cognition and Behavioral Outcome in Children and Adolescents with Previous ECMO Treatment: A Case Series with Neuroimaging Correlates

Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving procedure for patients in respiratory or cardiac distress. Prior studies have demonstrated several known risks to the procedure, such as hypoxia, stroke, and other neurological complications (Cheng et al., 2014) that can lead to temporary or permanent deficits in motor abilities, developmental trajectory, academic abilities, and cognition (Glass et al., 1995). Although several studies have investigated morbidity and mortality rates of pediatric ECMO patients, few have looked at cognitive deficits, and even fewer at magnetic resonance imaging in relation to neuropsychological outcome and behavioral, emotional, or social functioning. The aims of this study were to investigate cognitive ability and behavioral functioning in a group of ECMO-treated patients compared to a normative sample, and to examine brain morphometry in hippocampal regions as they relate to cognitive outcome. Participants for this study were recruited from Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT. The total number of participants recruited was 8 (63% female; M age at testing = 16.75, SD = 4.5), and all participants were at least 1 year post-ECMO procedure (M=5.6 years; SD=2.1) for acute respiratory or cardiac illness. Neuropsychological testing was completed using the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery. Scores were compared to normative data for age to investigate potential impairment in multiple cognitive domains. Each participant and the parent or guardian of minor participants completed brief questionnaires measuring executive functioning, behavior, and social skills, namely The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning, The Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition, and the Social Skills Improvement System Rating Scales. Six of the participants also underwent MR imaging to obtain measures of cortical thickness in the frontal areas of the brain, as well as hippocampal and total intracranial volume. Performance results on the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery was impaired in over half of the tested individuals who underwent ECMO as children. Attention, executive function, processing speed, and visual memory were well below the expected range for age in the majority of participants. Crystallized intelligence tasks, such as vocabulary, were in the average to above average range for most participants, likely indicating normal baseline functioning. Self- and informant report revealed variable results across participants, with various behavioral, emotional, and social difficulties reported in the group. Bilateral hippocampal volume was positively correlated with scores on tasks of episodic and working memory, though further study with a larger sample and control group is warranted. Preliminary MRI data for cortical thickness and volume of frontal regions are presented. Interpretation of results, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

The Relationship Between Generalized Joint Laxity and Hip Cartilage Thickness in Ballet and Modern Dancers

Generalized joint laxity (GJL), a condition in which most joints of the body move beyond the accepted normal range of motion, is present in many ballet and modern dancers. It has been associated with an increased risk of injury, decreased muscle strength, and greater landing forces. Increased joint laxity results in joint instability and may precede the development of osteoarthritis, which is associated with a reduction in cartilage thickness. We hypothesized that dancers with GJL would have decreased hip cartilage thickness, as well as greater hip adduction angles and greater ground reaction force on landings. Twenty female ballet and modern dancers (mean age: 21.0 ± 1.79 years; mean weight: 57.0 ± 5.71 kg; mean years of dance experience: 14.6 ± 3.53 years; mean hours of training per week: 19.2 ± 7.24 hours) were recruited from college and local dance programs and screened for GJL. Each dancer performed three forward drop landings onto a force plate and received an MRI on their dominant hip. There was a significant difference in hip cartilage thickness, as viewed in the frontal plane (GJL group average: 2.66 ± 0.33 mm; control group average: 3.14 ± 0.48 mm; p = 0.0160), between the groups. There were no significant differences in peak hip adduction angle on landing (GJL group average: 80.9 ± 5.04 degrees; control group average: 77.9 ± 5.78 degrees; p = 0.2269) or peak landing ground reaction force (GJL group average: 5.56 ± 1.28 body weights; control group average: 5.17 ± 0.82 body weights; p = 0.4274) between the generalized joint laxity group and the control group. Dancers with GJL have thinner cartilage at the hip. These results suggest that dancers with GJL may be at a greater risk for injury. Therefore, these dancers may benefit from strength training programs, rather than flexibility training, to help counteract the joint instability that can lead to injury.

Cortical Thickness and Voxel-Based Morphometry of Classic Motor Regions of Interest in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Prior research has suggested that any cortical volume (CV) abnormalities in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) need to be further explored by examination of the two determinants of CV, that being cortical thickness (CT) and pial surface area (PSA; Murphy, Beecham, Craig, & Ecker, 2011). The current study suggests that the two determinants of CV should be explored even in the presence of null CV findings, if structure-function analyses are significant (i.e., bi-lateral precentral gyrus and neuropsychological motor test) as demonstrated in the current sample (see Duffield et al., 2013). The only significant anatomic finding was reduced CT in the left frontal motor regions (primarily left precentral gyrus), which also corresponded to the only significant relationship between a motor variable (i.e., grooved pegboard test) and motor region-of-interest (ROI) where ASD had a stronger relationship than typically developing controls (TDC; ASD > TDC). Left hemisphere biased CT group differences has been shown to have the highest classification accuracy (i.e., designation of ASD versus TDC) of morphological parameters (Ecker et al., 2010), yet PSA has been shown to have far greater modulation of CV abnormalities. This is particularly true for subthreshold PSA (Ecker et al., 2013). These prior findings are not only consistent with the current motor ROI findings, but also provide an explanatory framework for the functional neuroanatomy of a generally worse left handed performance (i.e., non-dominant hand) for ASD compared to controls in a generally right handed dominant sample (no significant group differences on handedness). The only significant motor ROI finding was in the left hemisphere (i.e., ipsilateral to worse left handed performance), but subthreshold PSA findings in the right precentral were found and likely provide explanatory power of motor performances in the aggregate, despite a lack of significant statistical differences in a specific motor ROI individually.
