Développement expérimental d'un télescope Compton au xenon liquide pour l'imagerie médicale fonctionnelle / Experimental development of a liquid xenon compton telescope for functional medical imaging

Oger, Tugdual 06 January 2012 (has links)
3γ imaging is a new nuclear medical imaging technique which has been suggested by Subatech laboratory. This technique involves locating three-dimensional position of the decay of an innovative radioisotope (β+, γ) emitter the 44Sc. The principle consist in the detection of two photons of 511 keV gamma rays from the decay of the positron, provided by a PET ring detector, associated to the detection of the third photon by a Liquid xenon Compton telescope. The energy deposited in the interaction between the photon and xenon and its position are identified by measuring the ionization signal with a MICROMEGAS chamber (MicroMesh Gaseous Structure), while the trigger and time measurement of the interaction are provided by the detection of thescintillation signal. The principle of the TPC is thus usedto Compton imaging. In order to demonstrate experimentally the feasibility of imaging 3γ, a small prototype, XEMIS (Xenon MedicalImaging System) was developed. This thesis is an important step towards the proof of feasibility. In this work are exposed the characterization of the detector response for a beam of 511 keV gamma rays and the analysis of data derived from it. The measurement of energy and time resolutions will be presented, as well as the purity of the liquid xenon.

Development of xenon level instrumentation for the LZ dark matter detector

Liao, FengTing January 2017 (has links)
Galactical and cosmological evidence show that a quarter of the energy budget of our universe is made of collisionless, non-relativistic, and non-baryonic dark matter. Its potential coupling to standard model particles, however, has not yet been understood. One of the leading candidates - Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP) - allows the production of a dark matter relic density as observed today and couples to standard model particles at or below the weak scale. LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a future tonne-scale two-phase xenon TPC aiming to detect WIMP recoils with xenon nuclei. The experiment will begin WIMP search data-taking in 2020 at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota and has a projected sensitivity of 3 × 10-48 cm2 or better in probing a 40 GeV/c2 WIMP. The main observables of particle interactions in LZ are the primary scintillation (S1) and secondary scintillation (S2). However, optimising and achieving a stable S2 signal in such a tonne-scale TPC is non-trivial. Effects from the structural design of the S2 production region (top-corner structure), TPC tilt, and the xenon circulation system requires precise monitoring of the liquid surface. Such monitoring is achieved by the capacitive liquid level sensors developed within this thesis. The sensors are strategically placed to ensure that nonuniformity of the S2 signal due to the effects can be understood and corrected. In this thesis, the development of a monitoring system designed to optimise the quality of the S2 signal, based on the capacitive level sensors is discussed. A design of the electronics scheme based on a differential measurement allows femtofarad precision measurement of sensor's capacitance at picofarad level, even in the presence of cable capacitance at nanofarad level. A systematic study of the response of such a sensor to LXe and the application of the precision level sensors to two-phase TPC was carried out. Findings of intrinsic influences from LXe artefacts and LXe dielectric constant variation with its saturated temperature are identified; the result on the application of the sensors contributes to the designs of LZ circulation and the top-corner region. The final LZ level sensors show an artefact-free liquid level measurement and a 12 &mu;m precision in measuring liquid nitrogen level (projection for LXe: &Tilde; 9 &mu;m) over a 20 mm measurement range.

Novel Front-end Electronics for Time Projection Chamber Detectors

García García, Eduardo José 03 September 2012 (has links)
(2012). Novel Front-end Electronics for Time Projection Chamber Detectors [Tesis doctoral no publicada]. Etude de la radioactivité deux-protons de 67Kr et développement d’une chambre à projection temporelle / Study of 67Kr two-proton radioactivity and development of a time projection chamber

Goigoux, Thomas 23 October 2017 (has links)
Two-proton radioactivity is a decay mode of proton-rich nuclei located beyond the proton nuclear existence limit (drip line). Predicted in the 1960s, this process was observed for the first time in 2002 in the 45Fe decay study. Only four two-proton emitters were known so far: 45Fe, 48Ni, 54Zn and 19Mg. A search for new emitters was performed with the EURICA- WAS3ABi setup at the RIKEN Nishina center in 2015. The decay of 59Ge, 63Se, 67Kr and 68Kr was observed for the first time. Two-proton radioactivity of 67Kr together with the beta and delayed proton decay of exotic nuclei in the region were studied. A time projection chamber (TPC) developed at the CENBG (2004-2011) enabled the study of the correlations between the protons for 45Fe and 54Zn. A second generation of TPC is under construction within the ACTAR TPC (ACtive TARget for TPC) collaboration. This detector enables a reconstruction in three dimensions of the energy deposited in the active volume which allows a more efficient reconstruction of the tracks as compared to the previous TPC. The generic electronics GET (General Electronics for TPCs) manages the processing and acquisition of the signals. The characterisation of the GET electronics and the TPC demonstrator at CENBG is devoted to the second aspect of this PhD work.

Direct search for dark matter with the DarkSide experiment / Détection directe de matière sombre avec l'expérience DarkSide

Agnes, Paolo 30 September 2016 (has links)
A wide range of observational evidence suggests that the matter content of the Universe is dominated by a non-baryonic and non-luminous component: dark matter. One of the most favored candidate for dark matter is a big-bang relic population of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The DarkSide program aims to the direct detection of WIMPs with a dual-phase liquid argon TPC and a background free exposure. The first phase of the experiment, DarkSide-50, is running since Oct 2013 and has (46 ± 0.7) kg active mass. A first run, with an atmospheric argon fill (AAr), provided the most sensitive limit ever obtained by an argon-based experiment. The current run, with an underground argon fill (UAr, depleted in Ar-39), represents a milestone towards the construction of DarkSide-20k, a low-background dual-phase TPC with a fiducial mass of 20 t. This work is been mainly devoted to the description of G4DS, the DarkSide Monte Carlo simulation, and to its applications. G4DS is a GEANT4-based simulation, it provides the geometry description of each detector of the DarkSide program, it is tuned to reproduce the DarkSide-50 response at the percent level and incorporates a custom model for ionization and scintillation mechanisms in liquid argon, tuned on real data. The principal applications of the simulation include the estimate of the neutron and gamma backgrounds for DarkSide-50, the measurement of the Ar-39 depletion factor in UAr with respect to AAr and the design studies for DarkSide-20k.

Database server workload characterization in an e-commerce environment

Liu, Fujian 19 December 2005
A typical E-commerce system that is deployed on the Internet has multiple layers that include Web users, Web servers, application servers, and a database server. As the system use and user request frequency increase, Web/application servers can be scaled up by replication. A load balancing proxy can be used to route user requests to individual machines that perform the same functionality. <br><br>To address the increasing workload while avoiding replicating the database server, various dynamic caching policies have been proposed to reduce the database workload in E-commerce systems. However, the nature of the changes seen by the database server as a result of dynamic caching remains unknown. A good understanding of this change is fundamental for tuning a database server to get better performance. <br><br> In this study, the TPC-W (a transactional Web E-commerce benchmark) workloads on a database server are characterized under two different dynamic caching mechanisms, which are generalized and implemented as query-result cache and table cache. The characterization focuses on response time, CPU computation, buffer pool references, disk I/O references, and workload classification. <br><br>This thesis combines a variety of analysis techniques: simulation, real time measurement and data mining. The experimental results in this thesis reveal some interesting effects that the dynamic caching has on the database server workload characteristics. The main observations include: (a) dynamic cache can considerably reduce the CPU usage of the database server and the number of database page references when it is heavily loaded; (b) dynamic cache can also reduce the database reference locality, but to a smaller degree than that reported in file servers. The data classification results in this thesis show that with dynamic cache, the database server sees TPC-W profiles more like on-line transaction processing workloads.
