This thesis deals with the question of how vulgarisms are translated in the context of a literary text. First we sum up the theories of expressivity used in both common and literary communication. We point out the main typological differences between Czech and French as well as the key cultural differences in the perception of expressivity. We define the term 'vulgarism' and try to outline the use of substandard language in both Czech and French literature. In the following chapter Michel Houellebecq, his work and the fundamental traits of his writing style are presented. We also look at the reception of the Czech translation of Houellebecq's novel Les Particules élémentaires. Then we analyse the translation, focusing on the transfer of vulgarisms in order to trace and evaluate the translation method used to convey the vulgar elements of the original work.

Jakob van Hoddis, Georg Trakl together with Else Lasker-Schüler belong to the leading representatives of early expressionist poetry. This thesis deals with translation analysis of their selected poems into the Czech language. The first part of the thesis describes the birth, evolution and essential ideas of expressionism, but also significant centres of literary course of events of that period and reception of expressionism in Bohemia and Moravia. The issue of artistic translation is further outlined with focus on the question of equivalence. The second part of the thesis includes analysis of selected poems, which are ordered according to the author and date of issue. One chapter is devoted to each poet, it briefly introduces his life to help point out aspects which have influenced his production, followed by analysis of poems that document the circumstances of their creation and comparisons of their translations. Tereza Jůzová's thesis Georg Trakl's Poetry in Czech Translations tries to discover which specific expression this Austrian poet takes in three Czech versions created by Bohuslav Reynek (1917, 1924), Ludvík Kundera (1965) and Radek Malý (2005) - three translators belonging to three different generations. The first chapter is devoted to Trakl and his work, ranked in the social and literary context. The second chapter presents the translators and their achievements, summarizes the period reception, and gives a brief overview of the poet's influence on original Czech literature. The focus of the thesis is the third chapter - translation analysis of six selected poems transposed to Czech. It is theoretically based on the translation shifts theory of Anton Popovič and on the method of translation analysis developed by Jiří Levý. It turns out that each of the original translators handled the original in their own way and accentuated different aspects of Trakl's work. Reynek colours the words by kind and gentle expression and his translation is the most peculiar. Kundera and Malý approached Trakl's plain style, Kundera, however, does not hesitate to underline some poetic passages. Malý intentionally reproduces the frequent ambiguity of the poet's formulations, which his predecessors insufficiently took...

This MA thesis focuses on four different Czech translations of William Shakespeare's narrative poem A Lover's Complaint (Antonín Klášterský 1923, Jarmila Urbánková 1997, Jiří Josek 2008, Martin Hilský 2009). The first part of the thesis characterizes the development of and changes in the Anglo-Saxon critical reception of this much-neglected work from its first publication up until the present day. Further, it shows the interdependence between the position of A Lover's Complaint in Shakespeare's canon and the interpretation of the poem's meaning. The second part focuses on the Czech critical reception and compares it to the Anglo-Saxon one. This part also introduces the four translators with respect to their literary and translation activities and describes the poetic and translation norms prevalent at the time of their careers. In the third (the empirical) part, the focus is on formal and semantic analysis of the source text, as well as of the individual translations. On the basis of these analyses it is examined to what extent the translations correspond to the source text; what shifts, losses or enrichments occur as a result of each translation. In the beginning, the specific problems of the literary translation will be introduced on a theoretical level. Based on the theory, the detailed translatological analysis of chosen Czech translation of Yi Mun Yeol's novel The Poet will follow. The translation will be compared to the original from various points of view. The biggest focus will be on various translation methods and strategies used for the transfer of the lexical and grammatical expressions, the information structure organization of the target text, cases of amplification, reduction, etc. The attention will be also focused on non-linguistic aspects of translation, such as transferability of cultural and historical facts to a distinct environment.

The thesis deals with the issue of all existing Czech translations of Adalbert Stifter's novella Der Hochwald, which were created in the first half of the 19th century, in the first and in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. The first part of the thesis is concerned with Adalbert Stifter's life and work and with the reception of his works within the Czech cultural context. Further, Czech translators of the novella are introduced and the source text is briefly analysed. The final part describes the development of translation methods and offers comparative translation analysis of selected passages. The primary objective of the presented thesis is to describe the changes in translation methods using results of the analysis.

The thesis focuses on modern translations of the classic American novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald within the Czech cultural setting. Initially, in accordance with Gideon Toury's (2012) descriptive model, two Czech translations will be compared in light of their functionality within the target literary canon, their dominating stylistic features will be determined and they will be assessed in terms of their acceptability or adequacy. Subsequently selected excerpts will be compared with the source text to reveal how each of the translations treats Fitzgerald's text, and in relation to these findings their shifts between acceptability and adequacy will be specified. The central goal of the thesis is to evaluate the transfer of Fitzgerald's very specific writing style, with special focus on its poetic character, lyricism and imagery. Therefore individual translation strategies will be identified and the invariant core of both of the translations will be determined. For an even more detailed explanation of the translation strategies the thesis employs the preceding translation by Lubomír Dorůžka (1960) which helps clarify the relationship between the studied translations. This thesis deals with Czech translations from Romanian with emphasis on the translatological aspect of the topic. The theoretical part analyzes a list of translations created by the combination of a number of sources according to the original authors, the publishers of the translations, the year of publication of the Czech translation and the translators. The theoretical part also includes the outline of the development of Czech translation theories and a brief summary of modern directions in translatology. The practical part shows, using an analysis of the Czech translation of Țiganiada (Gypsiliad) by Ion Budai-Deleanu, how should look the analysis of the translation before the translator starts translating, or during his work. This part includes a practical analysis model with a division into individual segments. Each segment includes examples of potential problems and suggests a way to deal with them from a theoretical point of view.

This theses focuses on Olga Krijtova (1931-2013), Czech translator from Dutch. The aim is to introduce Olga Krijtova within the framework of reception of Dutch literature in Czech cultural environment. In order to explore this framework, the thesis compares Czech and Dutch culture from translatological point of view, outlines the history of Czech-Dutch relationshiops and Dutch literary translations into Czech, as well as the history and current state of the academic discipline of Dutch studies. In the 20th century, Olga Krijtova had contributed greatly to making the Dutch literature available for Czech recipients. The thesis aims to find out how many translations done between the years 1957-2016 are Krijtova's or her students' work. Further, it summarizes her teaching and linguistic work. However, the main focus is her translation activities, which is studied by means of translation analysis in the second part of the thesis. The final aim is to review and interpret Krijtova's translation strategies and methods, as well as to assess her overall contribution to the reception of Dutch literature within the Czech environment and to the Dutch studies in the Czech Republic. The central focus of this Master's thesis is to describe, explain and classify intersemiotic translation within current translation studies. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the thesis, the theoretical part draws inspiration also from aesthetics, semiotics, adaptation, literary and film studies. Our findings are applied to the empirical material - interlingual and intersemiotic translation of Leaving by Václav Havel. Both translations are thoroughly analysed and the identified shifts are classified into categories primarily inspired by Anton Popovič's model of translation (1975, 1983). Comparison proved that the approach to intersemiotic translations/film adaptations as interlingual translation works. Although, there was a need to create new categories for some shifts in the film adaptation. Based on that, we propose a new model of intersemiotic translation, which could serve as inspiration for further research.
