Navigating a taboo topic in parent-child communication: Young adult stories about conversations with their parents about pornography

Joshua D Johnson (11199111) 29 July 2021 (has links)

Although many communication scholars have explored how parents and children navigate difficult conversations about taboo topics, little to no research exists concerning pornography, specifically from the perspective of the child. To fill this research gap, the following qualitative study utilized a narrative framework and methodology to explore characteristics in parent-child conversations about pornography that illicit positive or negative perceptions from children about those conversations. 18 young adults (18-25 years old) participated in semi-structured interviews in which they shared stories about conversations they had with their parents about pornography. Five major themes surfaced from the thematic analysis of the data: (1) open/closed relationship, (2) discussion-/lecture-based conversation structure, (3) specificity/ambiguity of conversation details, (4) affirmation/denial of curiosity, and (5) appropriate/inappropriate conversation context. The findings have theoretical implications and contextual contributions for family communication scholars in further exploring the topic of pornography as well as practical insights for parents to reflect upon in seeking to strengthen their conversations about pornography with their children.

“Taboo is something that the media should not engage in” : Swedish journalists’ perceived freedom when reporting on controversial topics

Lindholm Fjeld, Emilia January 2021 (has links)
In recent years, there has been talk of a declining confidence and growing mistrust of the news media. Swedish media have been accused of obscuring certain topics, of letting the newspapers’ political orientation guide the selection of news and of having a news evaluation process that is influenced by the journalists’ personal opinions. With this as a starting point, and the assumption that a high ranking in the press freedom index does not automatically translate to a media landscape unaffected by restraining factors, this thesis investigates the reality of the press freedom in Sweden. Through the method of triangulation, combining a quantitative survey with qualitative semi-structured interviews, the thesis explores how Swedish journalists perceive their journalistic freedom, as well as if all topics are represented in Swedish journalism. The conclusion shows that although Swedish journalists perceive their journalistic freedom to be high, there are signs of self-censorship resulting in a lacking reporting of certain news topics.

Šafránková, Lucie January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this postgraduate dissertation, entitled Sexual abuse, its depiction in literature for child and young adults and its potential to use it in school, is to introduce a reader to general informations about sexual abuse of children, to draw up general principles used in fiction literature and try to offer a concrete oportunity to work with these texts in literature classes. The thesis should point to importance and seriousness of these problems, make an appeal to timely prevention and familiarization of children/students with this problem and provide concrete materials and idea show to work with this topic. The theoretical part of the work deals generally with the taboo, its forms, historical shifts and its present form. Furthermore the issue of sexual abuse in terms of professional literature is discussed, which will help us in the practical work with the understanding and assessment of the fictional literature. The practical part deals with the analysis of particular books of fiction, specifically a book by Ann Dee Ellis This is what I did…and a book by Bryan Talbot The Tale of One Bad Rat and their didactic potential at literary education classes. / This work intends to build a particular discursive web out of notions such as memory, imagination and poetry, crossing critical theoretical perspectives to my view as to how discursivities about/for childhood have been dealing with its productions in contemporary times. Here I use the first person in na attempt to escape modernity´s abstract discursive rhetorics, which forges an universalist world expression. By highlighting my locus of speech, from my experience as a creator of a transmediatic product for childhood: Miúda and the Umbrella, I intend to discuss the uses of the childhood notion, aspiring to a greater politization of artistic actions for children which may rethink cast, stereotyped and stagnant models. The first chapter relates the discourses produced on childhood to literature, starting from the short story and the prohibitive idea of taboo in childhood. The second chapter presents written texts about the play Miúda and the Umbrella, which triggered many of the reflections present in this work. That crucial reading, therefore, resizes childhood and theater, suggesting connections between taboo and stereotype, as both mourning and comfort instances. The third chapter links discourses produced on childhood to the cinema especially produced for children. Part of it is dedicated to the paradigmatic shift taking place today, when it comes to revising hegemonic stigmas in contemporary child filmic narratives. I also try to enable ways of looking looking at childhood, articulating three focus group researches made on the short and long versions of the animated film Miúda and the Umbrella. Final comments point at the end of this process, as much at the beginning of a new journey – the construction of my new play for children: To the bubble-boy.
