This study reviews the evolution of television broadcasting in Taiwan from 1949 to 1982, with emphasis on the period from 1970 to 1982. The problem was to examine the development of the television industry in Taiwan as influenced by law and regulation, politics, and social customs. This study concludes that the development of the television industry in Taiwan was indeed greatly influenced by the above three factors. Future growth of the industry, however, may be greatly hindered unless the government relaxes its close control of the medium in the future.

In the early decades of the eighteenth century, the Hakka-speaking groups in south Taiwan were initially addressed "ke" (guest) in the writings by the Hoklo-speaking groups in a discriminatory manner. Nevertheless, they established their social status via the assistance to official troops in times of disturbances and via the expression of a collective consciousness through their advocacy of the Pavilion of Loyalty and Righteousness. Their identities were expressed in connection with their native places in the household registrations that were meant for baojia organization, taxation and in particular for imperial examinations. Clearly, the concept of Hakka as an ethnic group was not existent until some officials in the Japanese colonial government, who were influenced by the western idea of race, regarded Hakka-speaking groups as the Hakka race. Even so, more frequently the colonial officials categorized the Hakka-speaking groups "the Guangdong race," which directly applied the native places as their ethnic label. On one hand, this race category was fixed through official household registration, and on the other hand, colonial intellectuals endeavored to accentuate many cultural traits of the Hakka-speaking groups. This process gained legitimacy of the Hakka-speaking groups to be eventually ethnical within the colonial empire. It also perplexed the definitions of the Hakka in the process of the Liudui society's integration into the political and economic structure of the Japanese empire. / In today's Taiwan society, the promotion and construction of the Hakka as a recognized ethnic group is in the ascendant. The Liudui area in the south, together with Taoyuan, Xinzhu and Miaoli counties in the north, are generally acknowledged as the two main congregation areas of the Hakka in Taiwan. "Liudui," derived from the name of a local trans-village military organization in the Qing dynasty, was established by Hakka -dialect speakers in this region. Their religious center was the Pavilion of Loyalty and Righteousness (zhongyi ting) founded to worship the martyrs sacrificed for fighting the rebels. The concept of Liudui has transited from an alliance of Hakka-speaking villages to the symbol representing Taiwan Hakka to the present day. This thesis explores how the complex interaction between the local society and the three different states (the Qing empire, the Japanese colonial government and the Republic of China) in the past four centuries eventually led to the construction of the Hakka identity in the Liudui society. / The construction of the Taiwan Hakka ethnicity was influenced by different classifications in different periods of time. The transition in the wartime colonial period, in particular, was crucial for us to reconsider the relationship between the ethnicity and state as well as the historical process of ethnic construction. / The Japanese colonial government performed assimilation policy and evolved to violent "Kominka" movement in the last decade of her rule in Taiwan. Nevertheless, it was exactly during this wartime period that the construction of the Hakka as a nationality which exported from southern China and Southeast Asia became highly feasible. In particular, the launch of the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" brought opportunities for the integration of different nationalities within the Japanese ruling areas to come into reality. The vision of an enormous empire eventually collapsed because of the defeat of Japan, yet, this process paved the way for the postwar nation-state building in the same line. After the war, some people from the Chinese Mainland and some of them even originated from the Liudui area bore the Hakka identity and settled in Taiwan. They held important military and political positions in the republican government while in China, and they continued to play a crucial role in integrating the Hakka into the post-war nation-building process. Sounding the Ancestors: Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw and the Ancestral Spirit ImaginaryChen, Yang T. 12 1900 (has links)
Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw is a Taiwanese Aboriginal pop artist of the Pinuyumayan ethnic group. His albums have been acclaimed by Aboriginal listeners and Han-Taiwanese mainstream music critics for capturing the traditional Aboriginal sound and evoking the presence of the ancestors. In this thesis, I explore why Sangpuy's songs are understood to evoke ancestral spirit imaginary using a semiotic approach. I compare his music to traditional Pinuyumayan music such as pa'ira'iraw and shamanic songs to demonstrate how he uses similar musical gestures to evoke the sense of ancestral spirits. Other sonic elements such as the inclusion of the soundscape of a Pinuyumayan village provides a direct link to the lived experiences of the Pinuyumayan. I also position Sangpuy's music in the broader context of nationalism in Taiwan and how Sangpuy uses his music to negotiate Aboriginal issues such as land rights and environmentalism. Through this analysis, I demonstrate how Taiwanese Aborigines are incorporating their Indigenous ideology into popular music to carve out a space for themselves in Taiwanese society and garner more support for Indigenous rights in Taiwan.

鄉土文學是台灣文學的重要文學傳統,其發展始於1930年代,於1960、70年代走進巔峰時期,並在1980年代一度趨於沉寂。直至近年台灣文壇出現一批以鄉土為創作為重心的新世代作家,鄉土書寫漸漸重新成為一股潮流,論者更相繼提出「新鄉土」或「後鄉土」等的概念,用以概括上世紀九十年代以後台灣鄉土文學發展的整體現象,鄉土文學遂再次成為一個重要的研究課題。本文嘗試以回溯台灣鄉土文學發展史的方式切入上述研究課題,並透過深入考察三個新世代代表作家──袁哲生、童偉格、甘耀明──的鄉土寫作,藉以探究台灣鄉土文學從「鄉土」過度「新/後鄉土」的變異情況。 / 本文共分五章。第一章緒論,說明本文的研究動機、範圍、方法和前人研究綜述,並概述台灣鄉土文學的發展狀況,勾勒重要概念,作為後文討論「新/後鄉土」的參照。第二章探討袁哲生如何結合抒情傳統,背離台灣鄉土文學的批判與憂患傳統。第三章探討童偉格如何打破城鄉二元對立格局,揭露台灣當代的城鄉處境;第四章配合甘耀明的「新尋根」理念,探討作家如何在鄉土書寫中重現台灣的歷史記憶與本土文化。第五章結語,總結新世代作家運用當代意識,反思並超越台灣鄉土文學傳統,藉以回應文學潮流的更替以及社會的變遷,為台灣鄉土文學開拓新的發展方向。 / Nativist literature has been an important literary tradition in Taiwan. It gained momentum since the 1930s and reached its pinnacle in the 1960s and 1970s, but fell into decline in the 1980s. However, the trend of nativist literature has revived since the 1990s as a number of young writers chose to focus their creative writing on nativism. Since then the concept of "new nativist literature" and "post nativist literature" appeared in academic discourse to describe this literary phenomenon. This thesis attempts to examine this phenomenon and to explore how "nativist" literature has morphed into "new/post nativist literature" by observing works of fiction by Yuan Zhesheng, Tong Weiger and Gan Yaoming. / This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the goal, scope and methodology of this thesis and gives a succinct account of the significance of the previous researches; it also summarizes the development of Taiwan Nativist literature and outlines the important concepts to serve as the reference for the later discussion about "new nativist" or "post nativist" literature. Chapter two examines how Yuan Zhesheng re-evaluated the tradition of Taiwanese nativist literature and established a new point of view towards nativist writing with the aid of lyricism. Chapter three investigates how Tong Weiger re-examined the dichotomy of rural and urban Taiwan and how he exposed aspects of contemporary urban and rural Taiwan. Chapter four explores how Gan Yaoming represented Taiwan history in the Japanese colonial period and the Hakka and aboriginal culture in his writing. 過往研究者主要從主題、文化意涵等角度詮釋臺灣科幻小說的內容,鮮有從宏觀角度探討科幻小說創作與臺灣文學發展的關係。本文以為臺灣科幻小說與臺灣文學的「本土」論述密切相關。科幻小說是源自西方的文學類型(literary genre),它擅於探討跨越國族的普世議題,臺灣作家往往藉由引介和創作科幻小說,開拓他們創作的「世界視野」,並檢討「本土」論述中的民族主義情結。故此,臺灣科幻小說特別強調文化全球化對作家反思臺灣歷史和地域文化的重要性。在全球化的語境下,作家必須正視外國文化對臺灣「本土」的影響,並積極思考臺灣文學與世界文學共同的創作方向。 / 為了深入探討臺灣科幻小說對「本土」議題的反思,本文以三位作家的科幻創作為例,具體呈現科幻小說「從『本土』到世界」的發展過程:(一) 七、八十年代期間,張系國(1944- )以科幻小說審視鄉土小說中的民族主義情結,同時追溯對外省籍作家的身份認同極為重要的國共分裂史;(二) 八、九十年代期間,林燿德(1962-1996)以科幻小說檢討「本土」論述的暴力性質,同時以深受日本流行文化影響的年輕作家的立場,回顧日據時期的殖民歷史;(三) 二千年以後,吳明益(1971- )以科幻小說檢視「本土」論述中的族群文化,探討原住民與自然共處的方式,同時超越特定族群的立場,想像南島民族(Austronesian, 即原住民)遷徙的歷史。通過上述三位作家的科幻創作,本文希望指出臺灣科幻小說逐漸超越「本土」論述的局限,彰顯其普世價值。 / In the previous studies on Taiwanese science fiction, researches mainly adopted the thematic or cultural approaches among the others to interpret the science fiction. Seldom did they study them macroscopically and investigate the relationship between this kind of creative work and Taiwanese Literature. This thesis proposes that there exists an intertwined relationship between Taiwanese science fiction and the "native" discourse of Taiwanese Literature. Science fiction, as a literary genre, comes from the West and is known for its ability to transcend the boundaries of nation and ethnicity to discuss the universal topics. By introducing this genre and creating this kind of literary works, those writers open up the "globe perspective" in their works and examine the Nationalist sentiment in the "native" discourse. Hence, Taiwanese science fiction places heavy emphasis on the influence of Cultural Globalization upon Taiwanese writers’ reflections on Taiwanese history and culture. Under the context of Globalization, writers must face the influence of foreign cultures on "native" Taiwan and actively contemplate the common direction for creative works in Taiwanese and World Literature. / To further discuss how Taiwanese science fiction’s reflection upon the concept of ‘Native’, this thesis will study the science fiction of three writers to illustrate the Taiwanese science fiction’s development from "Native" to "Global" as follows: (1) In the 70s and 80s, Chang Shi-kuo (b.1944) examines the Nationalist sentiment in Nativist Literature through Science Fiction while he also traces the history of the separation between Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party, which is of vital importance to the immigrant writers’ identity; (2) Lin Yao-de (1962-1996) explores the violent nature of the "nativist" discourse by science fiction. Meanwhile, under the influence of Japanese popular culture over the young writers, he also reviews Taiwanese History during the Japanese occupation; (3) After the millennium, Wu Ming-yi (b.1971) investigates the ethnic culture in the "native" discourse and examines the aborigine’s ways to cohabit with the nature. He also transcends the boundary of a specific ethnic group to create the imaginative history of relocation of the Austronesian (that is the aborigines). Colonial intellectual is a good point of entry for making sense of anti-colonial movement because in many cases they constituted the pioneer of the movement. Moreover, in some cases, they became the founding father of new nations. However, such an important social category received inadequate attentions. / The main concern of this research is: how to make sense of the fact that in some colonies, anti-colonial movement were stronger while in others, the subjects were silent. The present writer would use colonial intellectuals from three areas (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore) as cases to illustrate the development of anti-colonial movements in above three areas in late nineteenth Century and Early Twenty Century. / Using the theory of institutionalization as theoretical framework, the present writer argued that the level of institutionalized of the society is the prime mover of the event. To view colonial society as a social group, it is argued that only in those societies reaching a high level of institutionalization, then members of the society would develop a kind of locally oriented vision of the society. That kind of vision is the necessary condition of anti-colonial movement.
