Green tea and its catechins modulate cholesterol metabolism in cultured human liver (HepG2) cells and the hypercholesterolaemic rabbit / Christina Anne Bursill.

Bursill, Christina January 2000 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (21 leaves). / 1 v. (various pagings) : ill. ; 30 cm. / Title page, contents and abstract only. The complete thesis in print form is available from the University Library. / Previous studies have found that green tea and its antitoxidant constituents, the catechins, are hypocholesterolaemic in both epidemiological and animal intervetion studies. The main objectives of the present study were to investigate the mechanism by which green tea and its most abundant catechin constituent epigallocatechin gallate increase the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor of HepG2 cells. In addition, it was hoped to determine if a crude catechin extract from green tea could lower plasma cholesterol levels in the hypercholesterolaemic rabbit and ascertain if this effect was due to an increase in the LDL receptor. The study provides evidence that green tea and its catechins exhibit hypocholesterolaemic properties and may therefore provide protection against heart disease. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Adelaide, Dept. of Physiology, 2000

The Marketing Strategy and Perceived Value Research for The Tea Drink in China

Chen, Jun-Hong 09 August 2011 (has links)
In recent years, due to people's living standards improve, people's comsuming ability rises, while the rapid development for the beverage market lead people have more selection in the water supply . Taiwan's beverage industry has matured, and the development of tea show explosive growth because the demand of product gradually trend more health and natural, the research for tea drink are countless, but in recent years, as China's sustained economic development, and promote the show jumping growth for all industy, the beverage market growth is unstoppable. But for the beverage market of china does no more complete research. In this thesis, the market selling and deviation of the China tea drinks is introduced as a index of the relevance among marketing theory and the perceived value, demographic statistics variables, this thesis can be the reference for the international enterprise which production and sell in china and the basis for the further study of drinks selling market research. In this study, use Zeithaml (1988) theory of perceived value and marketing 4C theory to study why consumers drink tea in China, what¡¦s the reasons for the purchase of tea? Therefore, this thesis use marketing 4C four dimensions as independent variables, and perceived value as the dependent variable. And then verify the demographic statistics variables on the marketing strategy and the impact of perceived value. The study found that 4C marketing strategy because of the lack of clarity in the definition of dimensions, the dimensions will be revised to the intrinsic attribute of _ the basic, intrinsic attribute of _ perception, intrinsic attribute of _ the form, brand equity, customer communication, customer costs six dimensions. And on the demographic variables on the perceived value and the marketing strategy forward with the only difference with the customer and gender have significant differences, and the remaining variables are no different. In the six dimensions and the perceived value there is a very significant positive relationship for each other, that the tea beverage market in the six dimensions of the use of this marketing is indeed the consumers can effectively enhance the perceived value. By regression analysis also found that the highest priority in terms of perceived value into account the intrinsic properties of _ for the perception, that is, consumers are more abstract level, non-universal awareness of the drink taste or price. Finally, this thesis has the following important discoveries of consumer demand in China: 1. The meaning of traditional culture and national consciousness 2. The rise of health consciousness 3. The rise of quality consciousness

Using Systems Thinking to Study the Development and Change of Taiwan Tea Industry after 1980s

Lin, Yu-ching 05 August 2009 (has links)
¡§Tea¡¨ in Chinese life occupies a very important position, and tea culture is also part of Chinese culture. Tea drinking habits as the Mainland immigration crossed over to Taiwan, but Taiwan tea really when already, its sprout from the Qing dynasty interim (about 1860s). Because Taiwan¡¦s special geographical environment, so planting out tea a unique flavor to semi-fermented Oolong tea producers to become one of the Government¡¦s emphasis on agricultural products, but also to earn a large number of foreign exchange for Taiwan. After 1982, the Government to repeal the ¡§the management of the Taiwan Province of tea,¡¨ of the rules, While been canceled has begun to import, self-made, sold, the whole of Taiwan tea industry from this point onwards have been great changes. At the international recession, Taiwan tea mores gradually, so Taiwan tea from export sales period to convert into the domestic market period. Later, there are Taiwanese Opera tea technology and products to mainland China and Southeast Asia production in recent years the enlargement, unworthy dealers import mainland inferior Vietnamese tea or Taiwan tea filled tea blended to trafficking in and profiting. In addition, the Government still cannot pesticide inspection standards with international conventions, resulting in substantially reduced. Now, the domestic market is disrupted and fasting the export-throat competition serious plight. Industrial structural change is inherently a dynamic, and for the strategy adopted by the phenomenon may be if fictive only in the short-term, long-term invalid status. This study and utilization of system thinking style of the Taiwan tea industry in the structure of dynamic change, through the causality of repaying the diagram to understand the current Government policy and more tea, tea merchants in the face of the predicament of the impact of action, and deduce the entirety of the tea industry in Taiwan policies rows to a conclusion.

Maternal green tea epigallocatechin gallate supplementation counteracts high-fat diet-induced metabolic derangements in dams andtheir male offspring: a programming effect

Li, Shiying, 李诗盈 January 2012 (has links)
The overall objective of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that through developmental programming maternal overnutrition-induced metabolic derangements in the offspring could be offset by supplementing the maternal diet with green tea epigallocatechin gallate (GTEG). The obesogenic diet was a high-fat (HF, 30%) diet. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were fed the HF, low-fat (LF, 7%) or HF diet containing 0.75% or 1.0% GTEG (GT1, GT2) from before conception and throughout gestation and lactation. Both doses of GTEG significantly improved metabolic control of the HF-fed lactating dams. The weaned male pups received the HF, GT1 or GT2 diet forming 6 dam/pup groups: LF/HF, HF/HF, HF/GT1, HF/GT2, GT1/HF and GT2/HF. At wk 13 they had similar weight but insulin resistance index (IRI), serum non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and liver triglyceride of rats born to GTEG dams was 57, 23 and 26% lower and accompanied by improved gene/protein expressions related to lipid and glucose metabolism compared to HF/HF rats (P < 0.05). Although the HF/GT1 and HF/GT2 rats had lower serum NEFA, their serum insulin and IRI remained comparable with the HF/HF rats. To determine if there is a critical time period for the actions of GTEG, in the second experiment female rats were fed the LF, HF, or GT1 diet prior to conception and throughout gestation. During lactation, half of the dams had their diet switched from HF to GT1 and vice versa. Pups were weaned to the HF or LF diet, forming the LF/LF/LF, LF/LF/HF, HF/HF/LF, HF/HF/HF, HF/GT1/LF, HF/GT1/HF, GT1/GT1/LF, GT1/GT1/HF, GT1/HF/LF and GT1/HF/HF groups. Metabolic controls of dams given GT1 during gestation or lactation were improved compared with the HF/HF dams (P < 0.05). Three-way ANOVA revealed that 22 wk old offspring born to dams fed the HF diet during gestation had higher serum and muscle triglyceride (TG) concentration and lower ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) (P < 0.05), all of which were reversed by supplementing GT1 to the gestational diet. Oral glucose tolerance at wk 15 was improved in those offspring born to dams given GT1 supplementation during lactation (P < 0.05). The increased serum NEFA concentration and IRI in offspring of dams fed the HF diet during gestation or lactation were reversible upon GT1 supplementation during either time period (P < 0.05). These rats (HF/GT1/HF, GT1/GT1/HF and GT1/HF/HF) had similar level of hepatic insulin receptor gene expression as well as protein abundance for muscle glucose transporter 4 and hepatic sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c but lower protein mass for hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase (P < 0.05) compared with the LF/LF/HF rats. Hence, maternal overnutrition-induced metabolic derangements in male offspring are reversible through supplementing GTEG to the maternal diet during gestation or lactation and this approach is more effective than giving GTEG to offspring born to overnourished mothers. Offspring metabolism could be programmed via manipulations of the maternal diet. / published_or_final_version / Biological Sciences / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy
