Caring for the (informal) caregiver in the workplace

Rudolph, Elizabeth Cornelia 22 February 2012 (has links)
The nature of jobs is changing as the global economy force organizations to become competitive and more of a virtual organisation of which the focus is more on team work. It is natural to look after the sick, elderly, disabled and children though those who care for these people tend to be forgotten. This study is an investigation of one of these informal caregivers. The roads on this journey (study) with the various cross-roads, intersections, paths and tracks were explored by means of multiple qualitative approaches. The respondent received an active role to voice her story as transcribed in her diaries. She deconstructed it accordingly of which the complexities thereof was holistically processed by means of Gabek (GAnzheitliche BEwältigung von Komplexität – a holistic processing of complexity). The uniqueness of this story can not necessarily be generalised though it can be used to prospectively identify the needs of the respondent. This can lead to adverse research outcomes associated with caregiving and target them for a prevention-focused intervention for others. This will help employers and employees in the art of balancing family responsibilities and workplace outputs. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Human Resource Management / unrestricted

Komandinės veiklos ypatumai švietimo organizacijose / Team work in educational organizations

Ščerbavičiūtė, Karolina 12 February 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In the modern society team work is quite popular and has a very important role. Teams are created based on different tasks, however, one of the basic arguments while applying team work is quicker and more productive decision making and results of a better quality. The paper is relevant, as possibilities of development of team work in educational organizations in Lithuania are perspective and could be widely realizable. The paper consists of four parts – three parts deal with the theoretical aspect, and there is a research. Theoretical parts analyze how different Lithuanian and foreign authors view theoretical aspects applied in educational organizations. Implementation of the main aim of the paper is carried out that is the concept of team work, benefits, advantages and disadvantages, the topic of employees’ motivation in team work, and possibilities of application it in educational organizations. Furthermore, the influence of leader and members’ role on team work is analyzed, the answer is given on what basis the choice of members is fulfilled and psychological specifications are discussed. The experience and popularity of team work in European countries is analyzed and evaluated. Based on the theoretical assumption and analysis, the research on team work in educational organizations is carried out. This part was aimed at the following tasks – to find out teachers’ opinion and evaluation of the importance of team work and its application and benefit at their working places... [to full text]

Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to enhance healthcare communication : an action research project with an acute stroke service

Tempest, Stephanie Elaine January 2014 (has links)
Background: Effective communication is key to team working in healthcare. It can be negatively impacted upon by existing cultures, logistical challenges, role confusion, and a lack of collaborative approaches to practice. Clinical guidelines recommend using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to aid communication within stroke teams. Yet no empirical evidence exists on the process or outcomes of such implementation. Aims: This project aimed to explore ways the ICF could be used with an acute stroke service and identify key learning from the implementation process. Methods: Using an action research framework, iterative cycles were used within exploratory, innovatory and reflective phases. Content analysis was used to map patient notes’ entries to ICF categories. Thematic analysis was undertaken, using a model of immersion and crystallisation, on data generated via interview and focus group, e-mail communications, minutes from meetings, field notes and a reflective diary. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative questionnaire data. Data from all sources were combined to determine key findings. Findings: Participants chose to develop an ICF-based team transfer of care report with an ICF glossary to aid completion. Five overall themes were determined; the need to: (1) adopt the ICF in ways that met local service needs; and (2) adapt the ICF language and format. Once implemented, the ICF: (3) fostered communication within and beyond the stroke team; (4) promoted holistic thinking; and (5) helped to clarify team roles. Conclusions: These are the first empirical findings within stroke services that demonstrate how to make the ICF a clinical reality. Participants needed to adapt and own the ICF to adopt it. When implemented, it enabled specific team communication challenges to be overcome. The use of action research to implement the ICF has facilitated sustained change and improvements to communication, thus benefiting patient care.

Synegy: A Synhetic Study on Teams.

Kirmani, Farooq, Akdemir, Fahri January 2009 (has links)

The main aim of this study was to test and ascertain, objectively, theexistence/occurrence of the phenomenon of Synergy in teams. To do this, the results of anonline course in Umea University, where students are invariably required to do a bunch ofindividual as well as team assignments, were analysed: the idea was to compare the marksobtained by the students in their team assignments with their marks in their individualassignments and to check if there was a reasonably good number of instances where the teammark was higher than the highest individual mark in that particular team. The basicassumption was that in case the team mark of a team was higher than the highest individualmark in that team, then, it can be presumed that synergy has taken place in that team for thatparticular team assignment. And, given a reasonably large sample of teams, it would beinstructive to see what percentage of groups/teams actually show synergy. In case a goodnumber of teams show such results then we could conclude that there was objective evidencein favour of the synergy. In case our analysis brought to fore such results then it would benatural to take the study one step ahead and test a broad causal relationship of synergy withthe complexity/difficulty of task at hand. After analysing the results of about 387 students, who worked in about 104 teams, itwas found that about 69.23% teams scored higher than the highest scoring individual; 93.26%teams faired better than the average score of team members; and, 98.07% teams can be said tohave performed better if compared to the lowest individual score.Further, one level below, when team-score and individual-score were compared acrossdifferent team and individual tasks (Case Studies), it still came to fore that teams hadoutperformed the individuals. And, when a single student’s marks in his team assignmentswere compared with his marks in his individual assignments, in five out of six comparisons itwas found that the team mark was convincingly higher than the individual mark. All these results strongly indicated the existence/occurrence of synergy in teams. In addition to this, an experiment on two teams of students was also performed toshow that synergy was more likely to happen if the task at hand was complex/ difficult. Theresults of this experiment seemed to corroborate the contention of the researchers. Keywords: Project Management, Team, Team Work, Individual work, Synergy
