A VERSATILE TECHNIQUE TO ENABLE SUB-MILLI-KELVIN INSTRUMENT STABILITY FOR PRECISE RADIAL VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS: TESTS WITH THE HABITABLE-ZONE PLANET FINDER

Stefansson, Gudmundur, Hearty, Frederick, Robertson, Paul, Mahadevan, Suvrath, Anderson, Tyler, Levi, Eric, Bender, Chad, Nelson, Matthew, Monson, Andrew, Blank, Basil, Halverson, Samuel, Henderson, Chuck, Ramsey, Lawrence, Roy, Arpita, Schwab, Christian, Terrien, Ryan 16 December 2016 (has links)
Insufficient instrument thermomechanical stability is one of the many roadblocks for achieving 10 cm s(-1) Doppler radial velocity precision, the precision needed to detect Earth-twins orbiting solar-type stars. Highly temperature and pressure stabilized spectrographs allow us to better calibrate out instrumental drifts, thereby helping in distinguishing instrumental noise from astrophysical stellar signals. We present the design and performance of the Environmental Control System (ECS) for the Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF), a high-resolution (R = 50,000) fiber-fed near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph for the 10 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. HPF will operate at 180 K, driven by the choice of an H2RG NIR detector array with a 1.7 mu m cutoff. This ECS has demonstrated 0.6 mK rms stability over 15 days at both 180 and 300 K, and maintained high-quality vacuum (< 10 (7) Torr) over months, during long-term stability tests conducted without a planned passive thermal enclosure surrounding the vacuum chamber. This control scheme is versatile and can be applied as a blueprint to stabilize future NIR and optical high-precision Doppler instruments over a wide temperature range from similar to 77 K to elevated room temperatures. A similar ECS is being implemented to stabilize NEID, the NASA/NSF NN-EXPLORE spectrograph for the 3.5 m WIYN telescope at Kitt Peak, operating at 300 K. A [full SolidWorks 3D-CAD model] and a comprehensive parts list of the HPF ECS are included with this manuscript to facilitate the adaptation of this versatile environmental control scheme in the broader astronomical community.

Zou, Hu, Zhang, Tianmeng, Zhou, Zhimin, Nie, Jundan, Peng, Xiyan, Zhou, Xu, Jiang, Linhua, Cai, Zheng, Dey, Arjun, Fan, Xiaohui, Fan, Dongwei, Guo, Yucheng, He, Boliang, Jiang, Zhaoji, Lang, Dustin, Lesser, Michael, Li, Zefeng, Ma, Jun, Mao, Shude, McGreer, Ian, Schlegel, David, Shao, Yali, Wang, Jiali, Wang, Shu, Wu, Jin, Wu, Xiaohan, Yang, Qian, Yue, Minghao 05 June 2017 (has links)
The Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS) is a new wide-field legacy imaging survey in the northern Galactic cap using the 2.3 m Bok telescope. The survey will cover about 5400 deg(2) in the g and r bands, and the expected 5 sigma depths (corrected for the Galactic extinction) in these two bands are g = 24.0 and r = 23.4 mag (AB magnitude). BASS started observations in 2015 January. and had. completed about 41% of the. area as of 2016 July. The first data release contains calibrated images obtained in 2015 and 2016 and their corresponding single-epoch. and coadded catalogs. The actual depths of the. single-epoch images are g similar to 23.4 and r similar to 22.9 mag. The full depths of the. three epochs are g similar to 24.1 and r similar to 23.5 mag.

Pulsion et qi : contribution du qigong à la compréhension du mécanisme du craving dans les addictions / Drive and Qi : Contribution of qigong in processing of craving in addictions

Plet, Nathalie 14 June 2018 (has links)
Our intent is to clarify our intuition on a more important research : integrating body-mind techniques, especially concerning the qigong 氣功or “work of breath”, in medical research thus opening important psychopathologic paths. The author, who has a double background, in both psychoanalysis and Qigong, sustains that the return to perception, backed up by the development of attentive gests and respiration, upgrades the driving force and is potentially responsible of having a positive effect on the compulsive processes. The scientific stake inscribed in the first program of clinical research dedicated to Qigong supported by the Minister in charge of Health matters, would be to contribute to the actualisation of modes of action on the processes of unbinding and fixation by boosting the life drive. The author has extracted the concepts of Drive and Qi, fundamental concepts in both fields (Partial and II). This method has allowed us to clarify the respective occurrences in both worlds from a common point – energy. The first four chapters establish the basis of the understanding of these concepts and notions necessary to understand the articulation of Drive and Qi referring to a common driving force. The clinic for addictions is a privileged field of investigation (Part III). Indeed, the explication of craving as the central symptom of addiction and its’ instinctive nature comforts us in the choice of a mixed approach, quantitative and qualitative, oriented towards the psychoanalysis. In other words, this research places us in the heart of the Freudian pulsation dynamic and the approach is inscribed in the scientific progress of our time. The driving dynamic and the introduction of body-mind techniques arouse the interest of the neuroscientifics especially at the University Hospital Pitié-Salpêtrière.

Investigation into the rolling of profiled rings

Moussa, G. January 1981 (has links)
Three aspects of ring rolling are investigated in this thesis, single stage closed-pass rolling, multi-stage rolling and radial-axial rolling. In Chapter Two, which deals with single stage closed-pass rolling, the rolling of a range of symmetrical and non-symmetrical profiles is investigated., The effects of feed rate, lubrication, small variations in the geometry of the roll and blank shape on profile filling are examined experimentally. The occurrence of defects and surface cracking and the stability of rolling when producing non-symmetrical profiles are examined. Rolling force and torque are predicted theoretically and comparisons with experimental results are made. In Chapter Three the production of a bicycle rim is investigated, following an enquiry from a cycle manufacturer. A multi-stage ring rolling operation is employed. The problems of profile filling, cracking and surface finish are solved. 'Means of providing stability to the rolling process and diameter control are developed and tested. The circumference is controlled to within 1 mm with radial thickness variations within 1% of the specified thickness. Various aluminium alloys and a magnesium alloy are used as test materiaLs. A theory for the dimensional limitations in relation to profile folding in the final stage is given. In Chapter Four a newly installed experimental axial rolling system is described. The system was designed and manufactured in the Department and it was provided with control and measuring equipment. Stability of the rolling process is examined theoretically and experimentally for axial and radial-axial ring rolling operations and the control system is examined. Rolling force and torque and power dissipation are predicted theoretically and compared with experimental results.
