Potential contribution of industrial design to the adaptation of agricultural machinery for use in MalaysiaAwang, Dzulkifli January 1995 (has links)
This thesis describes a study of the potential contribution of industrial design to the adaptation of agricultural machinery for use in Malaysia. The study identifies the nature of agricultural machinery and equipment design which uses mainly adaptation concepts as a means of getting a 'quick' design. The nature of industrial design with regard to agricultural machinery and equipment design in Malaysia and the UK was also studied. This research has established the potential of industrial designers to contribute in this area of design activity. This researchu tilised a combinedm ethodologyo f'triangulation' where quantitative surveysa nd qualitative studies were used. Literature surveys, a groundwork study, questionnaire surveys, case studies, interviews, and observations were carried out. Case studies and interviews were the main methods of data collection while questionnaire surveys helped to provide information, support, and validate findings from the former methods. Case studies and interviews involved five establishmentsin Malaysia and four companiesi n the UK. Adaptation designw as confirmed as'a successfulc oncept, however, the processesin volved in the designo f machinesa nd equipmentn eedt o be developeda nd improved. There were generally no specific design processes or procedures adhered to while carrying adaptation design work. They were determinedb y the samef actors i. e. the types of projects, aims/objectiveso f project, duration and date-line, funding and level of adaptation design. From the quantitative survey and qualitatives tudyr esults,i t was establishedth at industrial design should be incorporated into the adaptation design concept. The role of industrial designers in adaptation design can be that of assisting and advising the engineers and working collectively as a team. The potential contributionso f industriald esignersw ould be to improve 'appearance('a esthetics),q uality, and overall design. Industrial design knowledge in human-factors- ergonomics/anthropometricswere also sort for in order to satisfy factors such as safety and ease of use. Industrial designers were also needed to achieve designs which could reduce costs and to increase sales of machinery/equipmenpt roducts. The thesis concludes that the diverse nature of agricultural machinery and equipment design, especiallyfo cusingo n the adaptationd esignc oncept,r equiresa synthesisa pproachr equiring the participation and consideration of such factors as: inter-disciplinary relationships, agricultural policy, designp olicy, designe ducation,a nd public awarenessA. ll thesef actors coupled with the contributions made by industrial designers would bring improvements to the success rates of adaptation design. Since the late 1970s, families of microelectronic technologies that could bring the advantages of high levels of electronic integration have been available at reasonable prices and manageable risk to all sectors of UK industry. However, the uptake of these technologies has been painfully slow, particularly by the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that make up most of the companies currently operating in the UK. It is the aim of the research described here to assess how slow the uptake has been, the reasons for it, and possible solutions to the problem. The problem is investigated with reference to SMEs. In order to reach conclusions it has been necessary to:- • Define Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) technology and review its history • Review that nature of the UK SME base and identify why they should use ASICs • Review the UK, European and World ASIC markets • Analyse the nature of the UK ASIC design and supply industry • Ascertain the reasons for non-adoption and assess their validity • Relate the findings of this research to appropriate business, organisational and system models • Review past and existing technology-transfer programmes operating in the area of ASIC adoption at a UK, European and world level • Compare the adoption of ASIC technology with the adoption of similar, wide-ranging, new technologies The study concludes that the technology is unique in the wide range of industries to which it can be applied, and that although some advances in adoption have been made, there remains a significant number of hurdles to adoption which can best be addressed by government intervention and supporting activity from supply-companies, trade associations, user-groups and professional and educational institutions. Only once adoption has reached a 'critical mass' can it be assumed that a self-sustaining market will result.

This research takes technology suppliers, characters of the technology and receivers of technology as three major independent variables. In other words, the negative effect of the absorptive capacity can be reduced effectively by using proper technology transfer mechanism and thus achieving satisfactory performance. In the technology transfer process , in-depth factors other than existing procedures and rules are considered. This will affect the effectiveness and goals of the transfer. Besides, the technology characteristics and technology transfer performance are related to each other. The knowledge and ability to technology transfer with shorter gap between technology provider and accepter, help developing new products and improving management process with consolidated firm competitiveness and has become the significant theme of the 21st century.

Nowadays, The boundaries of the Enterprise were not division with regional of the geography environments under the global economic system. Even thought, the small company also have a lot of branch office was dispersed in the world; and some new companies also have a world view to use the cheaper labor and production source to service local market nearby. So, there are some benefits on the substantiation system of the produce technology transfer to the other area; short-term that will enhance the local competition; long-term that can continue to master the competition and to innovate products independence.
Under the globalization age of the knowledge economic, the knowledge be quickly acquired and effectively control that will be one of the route to create the value and to master the advantage of the competition for enterprise. Therefore, there are so many different modes to aim the character of the knowledge as the knowledge creation, knowledge transfer and knowledge acquired. In this thesis I will research that how to use the applicable and effective of the knowledge acquired mode for the applied of the knowledge management mode; that will avoid waste of the resource and also assist enterprise to manager and apply the knowledge that it get. Let the core ability will been complete transfer rapidly and to go a step further the technology innovation.
According to the state of the research motive as above that this study was through the document confer and case study of the technology transfer in the enterprise expect to obtain some of the research objective as below:
First, via the document confer to integrate the mode of the technology transfer and the frame of the knowledge management.
Second, to analyze the relationship of reciprocal action between the transfer of the core technology and knowledge management that will be valid used the frame of the knowledge management proceed to the next step. Also it could to accelerate the technology transfer.
Third, via the case study of the technology transfer, to confer the valid applied the mode of the knowledge management in the different phase when technology transfer.
Fourth, to analyze the difference compared with the step of the process when doing the technology transfer, and offer enterprise for reference.
