The main subject of this study is technology transfer. These terms are related to the process and the infrastructure - the technology transfer offices - that allow academical researchers to commercialize the results of their research. A case study comparing Belgium and Quebec will be at the heart of the reflexion.
A theoretical framework will be developed for the purpose of understanding the meaning of this activity. Various concepts such as innovation and knowledge-based economy will be introduced in an historical and a normative way. Successively, the different models that will be developed will complete the reader's understanding of the subject.
The questions that are raised in this thesis are related to the relationship between the researcher and his technology transfer office and the impact of this relationship on the process of technology transfer. Different hypothesis suggest therein the importance of both the academical policies related to intellectual property and the academical research's culture. These aspects are analyzed with the content of interviews. The ultimate purpose of this thesis is to suggest recommendations concerning good manners in the field of technology transfer. These last concern the organizational position of the
technology transfer offices during the process of technology transfer and the centrality of communication during this process.

Enhancing Australian Universities' Research CommercialisationCollier, Alan James, not supplied January 2008 (has links)
The Australian Government expects universities to engage in technology transfer and commercialisation (TT&C) and almost all universities have established a technology transfer office (TTO) for this purpose. The primary aim of this research was to identify what would enhance the overall performance of Australian universities in research commercialisation and industry uptake of the university research commercialisation outcomes. Four research questions were enunciated: 1 What are the systemic barriers to research commercialisation within Australian universities? 2 How could Australian universities overcome the systemic barriers to the commercialisation of university research? 3 How, in particular, could Australian smaller and regional universities enhance their research commercialisation capacity and performance? 4 How could the uptake by industry of Australian university research outcomes be improved? Question 1 was answered using a qualitative content analysis on the substantial body of literature available. Questions 2 and 3 were answered using multiple-case analysis involving eight Australian university case studies and comparing Australian university practice with five benchmark universities two from the US, two from Canada, and one from New Zealand. The first major conclusion was that there are three essential criteria upon which university TT&C success is built: institutional and senior executive support for TT&C superior TTO management; and sufficient world-class research being conducted. The second major conclusion was that the same key criteria for success in TT&C apply across the board, whether a university is smaller, regional, technical, new or old, research-intensive or otherwise. Question 4 was answered using case studies developed on five SME companies in the electronics industry in one Australian State and comparing these results with the outcome of a narrative review conducted on the literature to permit methodological triangulation. The research found a rich engagement occurring between universities and industry, with the most important element involving individual personal relationships.

Transforming research into business : MBA-thesis in marketingTorounidis, Thomas January 2010 (has links)
This thesis describes the innovation system in and around Lund. The aim was to investigate the innovation system in and around Lund by using functional analysis, i.e. analyzing functions and processes rather than actors and their independent task. Actors have been identified, grouped by their relevance and connection to specific processes, and described. A functional analysis has then been performed on the selected actors to establish current status and potential future needs.

A Study of Commercializing Nanotechnology in the Traditional Industry in TaiwanTsou, Hsin-I 19 June 2003 (has links)
Compared to China and southeast Asian countries, corporations of traditional industry in Taiwan are more and more uncompetitive in terms of cost of human and manufacture. The application of nanotechnology is an opportunity that can adds product value and upgrade industry in the traditional industry in Taiwan. Traditional industry corporations face stable environment and long technology life and manufacture mainly, so they have less need for new technology and are lacking in experience of commercializing technology.
The appearance of nanotechnology will affect Taiwan traditional industry¡¦s competitive advantage and make it without other choice but to face the emerging technology. Corporations must combine nanotechnology with its domain technology. Because it is different from the general process of commercializing technology adapted to the used technology, traditional industry corporations¡¦ processing the technology commercialization will face different problems and need different help.
The methodology of this research includes case study, secondary data collection approaches, and interviews of corporate managers and related experts. Then we integrate the three parts of the process of technology commercialization, the plan of National Science and Technology Program for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology for traditional industry, and Industrial Technology Research Institute¡¦s (ITRI) guidance and promotion project into the model of nanotechnology commercialization of traditional industry in Taiwan.
In this research, we find that government must actively facilitate nano-industry cluster, process nano-fundamental research and train people of talent to build a complete nano-industry environment. In the early stage of technology commercialization, the key point is how to bring in nanotechnology. The traditional industry corporations must cooperate with the modifiers and connectors, process technology transfer and then combine nanotechnology and their domain technology together. Finally, they could introduce their new products to the market.
