Small-Scale River Plume Dynamics at the Gaoping River Mouth

Huang, Sheng-feng 26 July 2012 (has links)
A major part of the terrestrial sediment in the ocean comes from the land via river plume. There are four stages in sediment dispersal from rivers into the sea: supply via plume, initial deposition, resuspension and transport by waves and currents or by the slope failure, and long-term net accumulation. We can understand the dispersion and transport of the river plume by in situ observations of hydrodynamic of the plume field. Therefore, it is helpful to study river plume hydrodynamics, such as winds, tides, waves, and currents. The purpose of this study is to identify the type of plume dynamics by analyzing the temporal and spatial variability of hydrological structures observed around the Gaoping River mouth. We observed the bottom and surface time series of temperature, salinity, turbidity, suspended sediment concentration, and velocity profile by instrument mounted at the tetrapods and a moored buoy during July 28 to 30 in 2009 and July 30 to August 2 in 2011. Besides, we investigated the spatial structures of the river plume in Gaoping River mouth by using a fishing boat in 2009. We also acquired satellite images to assist our study. The results showed that the river discharges during 2009 was lower than daily average discharge. Combined the temporal and spatial observations and satellite images, we determined that the river plume turned west during the ebb tide was influenced by Coriolis force and winds. The buoyancy-driven current velocity was 0.15 m/s and the maximum of wind-driven current velocity was 0.30 m/s. The wind strength index (Ws) determines whether a plume¡¦s along-shelf flow is in a wind-driven or buoyancy-driven state. Ws is the ratio of the wind-driven and buoyancy-driven along-shelf velocities. If |W_s | > 1 on average the wind velocity more than 5.9 m/s. The wind velocity reached this threshold during most of the ebb periods, and around that value in the flood time. Flood currents combined with cross-shore wind pushed the river plume to swing to the east. The data were analyzed by empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The results indicated that winds and waves were the main factors influencing plume dynamics during low-discharge period. During the field experiment in 2011, the river discharge was greater than daily average discharge. The buoyancy-driven and the maximum of wind-driven current velocities were 0.30 and 0.12 m/s, respectively. The wind velocity did not reach the threshold that was 11.67 m/s. The buoyancy-driven current was more significant than wind-driven current. By analyzing the ocean color of satellite images, the river plume was spreading from the river mouth and toward west during ebb. The time series data also showed that there was plume signal at the same time. The average cross-shore current velocity was 0.52 m/s, being larger than the buoyancy-driven current. Therefore, the tide was the main factor deciding where the plume discharged. The first eigemode of EOF suggested that current was the most important factor influencing plume dynamics during high-discharge period. The second eignmode described the dominant influence of wind.

Examining Packet Propagation in a Tree of Switches : Via Programmatic Scripting of Mininet / Undersöker paketutbredning i ett träd av switchar : Via Programmatic Scripting av Mininet

Tagkoulis, Georgios January 2022 (has links)
Hamid Ghasemirahni, et al. have shown that the order of the network packets arrival at a datacenter, equipped with commodity servers, plays a significant role in the latency of processing these packets. The larger the burst of packets that are part of a flow and hence will be processed using the same instructions and data, the greater the utilization of the system’s caches and subsequently the lower the latency of their processing. However, there are many reason for the packets to not arrive in a burst. One of the main reason that is examined in this project is packet interleaving that takes place in the routers and switches along the path that the packets take from a computer to/from the datacenter. This project take a more general look at traffic arriving at a server via a tree of network devices on the uplink path to the server. The focus is to use scripts to create a tree of switches and conduct experiments with them by scripting Mininet. From these experiments we learned that the different algorithms that control the output queues of the network nodes across the network path play a significant role in packet interleaving. Furtheromore, experiments on Mininet host connectivity explained how with the Openflow protocol, Mininet controller set up rules in the switches of the network topology. Finally, experiments in TCP throughput showed the limiting factors of a TCP connection between the server and a host while many provided traffic flows illustrate common behaviors of packet interleaving that occurs due to the switches.

Enhancing Object Detection in Infrared Videos through Temporal and Spatial Information

Jinke, Shi January 2023 (has links)
Object detection is a prominent area of research within computer vision. While object detection based on infrared videos holds great practical significance, the majority of mainstream methods are primarily designed for visible datasets. This thesis investigates the enhancement of object detection accuracy on infrared datasets by leveraging temporal and spatial information. The Memory Enhanced Global-Local Aggregation (MEGA) framework is chosen as a baseline due to its capability to incorporate both forms of information. Based on the initial visualization result from the infrared dataset, CAMEL, the noisy characteristic of the infrared dataset is further explored. Through comprehensive experiments, the impact of temporal and spatial information is examined, revealing that spatial information holds a detrimental effect, while temporal information could be used to improve model performance. Moreover, an innovative Dual Frame Average Aggregation (DFAA) framework is introduced to address challenges related to object overlapping and appearance changes. This framework processes two global frames in parallel and in an organized manner, showing an improvement from the original configuration.

Soil Carbon Dioxide Efflux Across Four Age Classes of Plantation Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) on the Virginia Piedmont

Wiseman, P. Eric 28 November 2001 (has links)
Soil carbon dioxide efflux resulting from microbial and root respiration is a major component of the forest carbon cycle. We undertook this investigation to better understand the nature of soil carbon dioxide efflux of plantation loblolly pine, an important ecological and economical resource in the southeastern United States. Specifically, we hoped to learn how soil carbon dioxide efflux differs both spatially and temporally for four age classes of plantation loblolly pine on the Virginia piedmont. During a 12-month period, soil carbon dioxide efflux was repeatedly measured for four age classes of plantation loblolly pine using a dynamic, closed-chamber infrared gas analyzer. The age classes examined were 1- to 2-year-old, 4- to 6-year-old, 8- to 12-year-old, and 20- to 25-year-old stands. Mean soil carbon dioxide efflux rates measured during the 12-month study were 1.72, 2.58, 2.84, and 2.90 micromole/sq m/s for 1- to 2-year-old, 4- to 6-year-old, 8- to 12-year-old, and 20- to 25-year-old stands, respectively. Stand age had a significant effect on efflux rate during 10 of the 12 monthly sampling sessions. Additionally, mean efflux rates were consistently higher near the tree and a significant positional difference was detected during 8 of the 12 monthly sampling sessions. Mean soil carbon dioxide efflux rates, by position, for the 12-month study were 2.72 and 2.28 micromole/sq m/s for the near and away measurement positions, respectively. Based on monthly mean soil carbon dioxide efflux rates, annual carbon losses were estimated at 651, 976, 1074, and 1082 g C/sq m/yr for 1- to 2-year-old, 4- to 6-year-old, 8- to 12-year-old, and 20- to 25-year-old stands, respectively. Regression analysis was used to examine the influence of soil and climatic factors on seasonal changes in soil carbon dioxide efflux. The most influential factors affecting soil carbon dioxide efflux during the 12-month study were soil temperature, soil moisture, stand age, and measurement position. We believe respiring roots significantly influence soil carbon dioxide efflux of plantation loblolly pine and account for differences observed between stands of different ages as well as spatial differences observed within a given stand. / Master of Science

Shimabukuro, Milton Hirokazu 05 July 2004 (has links)
Data repositories with ever increasing volumes have been made possible by the evolution in data collection technologies, creating important sources of information in several fields of human activity. Such data repositories often include information about both the temporal behavior and the spatial positioning of data items that will be relevant in future data analysis tasks. The process of discovering knowledge embedded in great volumes of data is a topic of study in several disciplines, including Information Visualization, which offers a range of techniques to support different stages of a discovery process. This thesis addresses the application of Exploratory Visualization techniques on datasets with temporal and spatial attributes, using the strategy of coordinating multiple data views, to assist data treatment on early stages of knowledge discovery processes. Two temporal visual representations are proposed – ‘Uni-scale Temporal Behavior’ and ‘Multi-scale Temporal Behavior’ – that support the exploratory analysis of temporal data. Moreover, a software architecture model is introduced – AdaptaVis, that allows the integration of these and other visualization techniques into a flexible, extensible and adaptable information visualization platform – called InfoVis – that may be tailored to meet the requirements of different users, tasks and application domains. Sessions conducted with real data and users from the Climatology and Business application domains allowed an empirical validation of both the visual representations and the model. The AdaptaVis model and the InfoVis platform establish the basis for further research on issues related to the coordinated use of multiple data views, the modeling of the coordination process and the integration amongst multiple visual and analytical techniques.

Aetiology and epidemiology of grapevine anthracnose / Etiologia e epidemiologia da antracnose da videira

Santos, Ricardo Feliciano dos 12 December 2017 (has links)
Grapevine anthracnose is an important disease, responsible for severe yield losses in humid regions around the world. This study aimed to: i: identify the causal agents of grapevine anthracnose in Brazil; ii: characterize Elsinoë ampelina isolates from Brazil and Australia by means of phylogenetic analyses, morphological features and pathogenicity tests; iii: develop an efficient method for conidial production of E. ampelina; iv: develop and validate a standard area diagram set (SADs) for assessing anthracnose severity on grapevine leaves; and v: study the temporal and spatial progression of anthracnose in a Brazilian vineyard. To identify the causal agents of the disease, leaves, stems and berries with anthracnose symptoms were collected from 38 vineyards in southern and southeastern Brazil and 39 E. ampelina and 13 Colletotrichum spp. isolates were obtained. For E. ampelina isolates, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), histone H3 (HIS3) and elongation factor 1-α (TEF) sequences were analysed. HIS3 was the most informative region with 55 polymorphic sites. Seven Colletotrichum species were identified: C. siamense, C. gloeosporioides, C. fructicola, C. viniferum, C. nymphaeae, C. truncatum and C. cliviae. In pathogenicity tests, only E. ampelina isolates caused anthracnose symptoms on Vitis vinifera \'Moscato Giallo\' and Vitis labrusca \'Niagara Rosada\'. To characterize E. ampelina from Brazil and Australia, 35 isolates were analysed. ITS and TEF sequences of all isolates were monomorphic. The haplotype network generated from HIS3 dataset showed four distinct haplotypes. High genetic variability was observed in two Brazilian isolates, haplotype EA4, which may have lost the intron region during species evolution. Colonies showed variable coloration, wrinkled texture, absence of spores and slow growth. Brazilian isolates produced conidia larger than conidia from Australian isolates. To induce the conidial production, mycelial fragments were shake-incubated in rainwater and distilled water for 7 days. Isolates produced different concentrations of conidia and the conidial germination was more than 88.5%. In infectivity tests, conidia caused typical anthracnose symptoms on leaves. The SADs developed comprises six true colour diagrams with severity ranging from 1.1 to 27.4%. The use of the SADs improved the accuracy, precision, agreement and inter-rater reliability of the estimates conducted by 12 raters. The temporal and spatial dynamics of anthracnose was carried out in a \'Niagara Rosada\' vineyard in 2014 and 2015. The incidence of vines with diseased leaves, stems and berries and the severity disease on leaves were recorded. Anthracnose symptoms occurred rapidly after bud break and ontogenic resistance was observed for all organs assessed. The monomolecular model showed the best fit to the incidence progress. Temporal analyses suggest that the progress of anthracnose incidence and severity over time is governed mainly by the primary inoculum due to age-related resistance of the vine organs. Spatial analyses showed a predominantly random spatial pattern of diseased vines. In conclusion, this thesis presents a more in-depth understanding of the aetiology and epidemiology of an important grapevine disease.

Lima, Marla Sonaira January 2011 (has links)
Aquatic ecosystems float around trends in which abrupt transitions can occur between persistents regimes, alterning the viability of the resources or the physical and chemical parameters. Following this trend, communities vary in time and space as a result of their interactions with the environment and other organisms. Microbial communities are important components in the aquatic metabolism, responsible for recycling of nutrients by remineralization, and transfering of biomass through the microbial food web. Understanding the functional microbial dynamics in lakes is an important tool to understand these systems, since the microbial composition and function may reflect the overall condition of the lake. The approach of metabolic fingerprint of microbial communities in shallow lakes was applied in the current study in Lake Mangueira, a costal and large subtropical shallow lake located in southern Brazil. The main goal was to evaluate, pioneered for this region, the heterotrophic microbial metabolic diversity through consumption patterns of available carbon sources using Biolog EcoplatesTM and verify the existence of temporal and spatial dynamics of consumption preference in these substrates. As a result, was observed temporal and spatial heterogeneity of substrate consumption preference among the Lake. Such preferences were represented by different substrate indicators, associated with seasons and sites within the Lake. The substrate utilization was related to environmental variability of factors as turbidity, water transparence, nutrients, chlorophyll a, organic carbon, water temperature. This is evidence that the functional dynamic was influenced by nutrients dynamic, production component, seasonality and compartimentation. In this way, carbon source utilization approach was a good indicator of functional dynamics in the present study to aquatic ecosystems.

Seasonal Variation of Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds and Sulfur-containing Odors Correlated to the Emission Sources of Petrochemical Complexes

Liu, Chih-chung 21 August 2012 (has links)
Neighboring northern Kaohsiung with a dense population of petrochemical and petroleum industrial complexes included China Petroleum Company (CPC) refinery plant, Renwu and Dazher petrochemical industrial plants. In recent years, although many scholars have conducted regional studies, but are still limited by the lack of relevant information evidences (such as odorous matters identification and VOCs fingerprint database), while unable to clearly identify the causes of poor ambient air quality. By sampling and analyzing VOCs, we will be able to understand the major sources of VOCs in northern Kaohsiung and their contribution, and to provide the air quality management and control countermeasures for local environmental protection administration. In this study, we sampled and analyzed the speciation of VOCs and sulfur-containing odorous matters (SOMs) in the CPC refinery plants, Renwu and Dazher petrochemical complexes simultaneously with stack sampling. The sampling of VOCs and SOMs were conducted on January 7th, 14th, and 19th, 2011 (dry season) and May 6th, 13rd, and 23rd, 2011 (wet season). We established the emission source database, investigated the characteristics of VOC fingerprints, and estimate the emission factor of each stack. It helps us understand the temporal and spatial distribution of VOCs and ascertain major sources and their contribution of VOCs. Major VOCs emitted from the stacks of the CPC refinery plant were toluene and acetone. It showed that petroleum refinery processes had similar VOCs characteristics and fingerprints. The fingerprints of stack emissions at Renwu and Dashe industrial complexes varied with their processes. Hydrogen sulfide was the major sulfur-containing odorous matter in all petrochemical plants. Compared to other petrochemical complexes, Renwu industrial complex emitted a variety of SOMs species as well as relatively high concentrations of sulfur-containing odorous matters. The petrochemical industrial complexes in the industrial ambient of VOCs analysis results showed that isobutane, butane, isopentane, pentane, propane of alkanes, propene of alkenes, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, styrene of aromatics, 2-Butanone (MEK), acetone, of carbonyls are major species of VOCs. In addition, ethene+acetylene+ethane (C2), 1,2-dichloroethane, chloromethane, dichloromethane, MTBE were also occasionally found. Sulfur-containing odorous matter (SOMs) analytical results showed that major odorous matters included hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, and carbon disulfide. The highest hydrogen sulfide concentration went up to 5.5 ppbv. In this study, the species of VOCs were divided into alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, carbonyls, and others. The temporal and spatial distribution of various types of VOCs strongly correlated with near-surface wind direction. The most obvious contaminants were alkanes, aromatics, and carbonyls of the dispersion to the downwind. Generally, the ambient air surrounding the petrochemical industrial complexes was influenced by various pollutants in the case of high wind speeds. It showed that stack emission and fugitive sources had an important contribution to ambient air quality. TSOMs and hydrogen sulfide emitting mainly from local sources resulted in high concentration of TSOMs and hydrogen sulfide surrounding the petrochemical industrial complex. Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that the surrounding areas of petrochemical industrial complexes, regardless of dry or wet seasons, were mainly influenced by the process emissions and solvent evaporation. The impact of traffic emission sources ranked the second. Chemical mass balance receptor modeling showed that stack emissions from the CPC refinery plants contributed about 48 %, while fugitive emission sources and mobile sources contributed about 30 % and 11%, respectively. The stack emissions from Renwu industrial complex contributed about 75 %, while fugitive emission sources and mobile sources contributed about 17 % and 5 %, respectively. The stack emissions from Dazher industrial complex contributed about 68 %, while fugitive emission sources and mobile sources contributed about 21 % and 2 %, respectively.
