The design and implementation of an elite training system for tennis

Dallis, Robert January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / The purpose of this study was to design a framework for a tennis training system that can be used to develop young tennis players into elite, world-class professionals. An elite tennis player is defined as someone who ultimately attains a top 200 professional ranking on either the men's ATP Tour or the women's WTA Tour. This system is meant to be utilized by training institutions as a whole, as well as individual players and their coaches. The methodology involved a literature review of research in youth talent development and talent detection, with emphasis on the works of Bloom (1985) and Ericsson (1990, 1993, 1994, 1996). Interviews were also conducted with prominent independent tennis coaches like Nick Bollettieri and Robert Lansdorp, as well as with a private coach from Estonia, and coaches from the tennis federation's of France and the Czech Republic. The results found that tennis development should begin between the ages of six to eight. In the early stages of development it was found that fun, stroke technique, and learning how to play matches should be emphasized. Sport specialization should not occur before age 13 or 14. In order to attain expert performance players should amass 10 years and 10,000 hours of directed deliberate practice. Although researchers theorized that players do not benefit from practices lasting longer than four hours, coaches interviewed believe that it is essential to practice for five to six hours between the ages of 16-18 when the player is transitioning from junior tennis to professional tennis. A nurturing relationship with a coach and supportive, yet moderately involved parents, are also key elements to this development program. Most importantly, players must develop and maintain a love for tennis if they are to attain expert status. / 2031-01-01

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL FACTORS TO AGILITY PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGIATE TENNIS PLAYERS

McKinley, Ian A 01 August 2010 (has links)
ABSTRACT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL FACTORS TO AGILITY PERFORMANCE IN COLLEGIATE TENNIS PLAYERS Ian McKinley and Dr. Kimitake Sato, Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, College of Education, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee Tennis players change direction numerous times within a tennis match and game making agility an important skill for them to possess. The purpose of this study was to investigate at the significance of physical factors as they relate to agility performance in collegiate tennis players. The physical factors looked at were anthropomorphic measurements; isometric peak force, rate of force development, and force scale; countermovement jump performance, and squat jump performance. The participants were seventeen (Male: N = 8, Female: N=9) NCAA Division I collegiate level tennis players. Anthropomorphic measurements included height, body mass, and body fat percentages were also considered. Strength was measured by an isometric mid-thigh pull, and lastly power was measured by vertical jumps. Significance was set at 0.05 for statistical analysis. Correlation analysis showed that isometric rate of force development from isometric mid-thigh pull was significant (p = 0.033). In conclusion both anthropomorphic measurements and vertical jumps have little effect on agility performance but the rate of force development in the isometric mid-thigh pull test has statistically significant relationship to agility performance in tennis players, indicating agility movement is influenced by how fast you can develop force against ground.

Hur tränare upplever att tennisspelande barn påverkas av sina föräldrars beteenden : En intervjustudie

Linn, Sjögren January 2015 (has links)
This study aims to investigate how parents' behavior affect their children in all tennis situations from the tennis coach's perspective in Sweden. Previous studies, done in other countries, have shown that most tennis coaches believe that parents' behavior towards their children have, generally, a positive effect. However, coaches have also reported a considered problematic behavior of parents affecting their children negatively during tennis competitions. No previous studies have been done in Sweden about this subject. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with five Swedish tennis coaches from different parts of the country. The results showed that Swedish tennis coaches understand that parental behavior in Sweden, mostly affect their children positively during most tennis situations, but that during competitions many juniors were negatively affected by their parents. As a conclusion, the results are in line with previous studies and parental behavior in Sweden, especially during a competition situation, could be more studied and improved.

The relative effectiveness of dry needling the extensor muscles of the forearm as an adjunct to cross friction massage in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis

Marquis, Janay January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (M.Tech.: Chiropractic)- Dept. of Chiropractic, Durban Institute of Technology, 2002. 113 leaves / Lateral epicondylitis is the most common cause of chronic lateral elbow pain in adults (Bowen et al. 2001:642). No uniform treatment regime is available for lateral epicondylitis, although most authors do agree that treatment should begin with a conservative approach before progressing to more complex and invasive therapies (Kamien 1990:174). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative effectiveness of dry needling myofascial trigger points of the forearm extensor muscles as an adjunct to cross friction massage, in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.

A comprehensive profile of elite tennis and strategies to enhance match play performance

Hornery, Daniel January 2006 (has links)
"This dissertation illustrates an interdisciplinary sport science approach to further understand the interaction between physiology and performance in tennis. An integral theme throughout the experimental phases was the emphasis on obtaining information from actual competitive scenarios or settings that simulated a match environment. [...] This study extended the work of similar investigations through the multifaceted methods in which performance was quantified. Overall the thesis provides unique insight into the physiological demands of professional tournament tennis and the constraints these impose on performance. Furthermore, evidence was accrued to support some of the common preparatory and in-match behaviours used by players to enhance performance." / Doctor of Philosophy
