An examination of factors contributing to a reduction in race-based subgroup differences on a constructed response paper-and-pencil test of achievement

The objectives of the present study were to: (a) replicate the results of Arthur et al. (2002) by comparing race-based subgroup differences on a multiple-choice and constructed response test in a laboratory setting using a larger sample, (b) extend their work by investigating the role of reading ability, test-taking skills, and test perceptions that could explain why subgroup differences are reduced when the test format is changed from multiple-choice to a constructed response format, and (c) assess the criterion-related validity of the constructed response test. Two hundred sixty White and 204 African Americans completed a demographic questionnaire, Test Attitudes and Perceptions Survey, a multiple-choice or constructed response test, the Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices Short Form, the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Experimental Test of Testwiseness, and a post-test questionnaire. In general, the pattern of results supported the hypotheses in the predicted direction. For example, although there was a reduction in subgroup differences in performance on the constructed response compared to the multiple-choice test, the difference was not statistically significant. However, analyses by specific test content yielded a significant reduction in subgroup differences on the science reasoning section. In addition, all of the hypothesized study variables, with the exception of face validity, were significantly related to test performance. Significant subgroup differences were also obtained for all study variables except for belief in tests and stereotype threat. The results also indicate that reading ability, test-taking skills, and perceived fairness partially mediated the relationship between race and test performance. Finally, the criterion-related validity for the constructed response test was stronger than that for the multiple-choice test. The results suggested that the constructed response test format investigated in the present study may be a viable alternative to the traditional multiple-choice format in high-stakes testing to solve the organizational dilemma of using the most valid predictors of job performance and simultaneously reducing subgroup differences and subsequent adverse impact on tests of knowledge, skill, ability, and achievement. However, additional research is needed to further demonstrate the appropriateness of the constructed response format as an alternative to traditional testing methods.

Development of a test procedure for water sensitivity of asphalt concrete mixtures

Environmental factors such as temperature, air, and water can have a profound effect on the durability of asphalt concrete mixtures. In mild climates where good quality aggregates and asphalt cement are available, the major contribution to deterioration may be due to traffic loading and the resultant distress is manifested in the form of fatigue cracking, rutting, and raveling. But, when more severe climates are coupled with poor materials and traffic, premature failure may result. The objectives of this research are twofold and includes: (1) development of a test system to evaluate the most important factors influencing the water sensitivity of asphalt concrete mixtures; and (2) development of laboratory testing procedures that will predict field performance. This research also addresses the hypothesis that much of the water damage in pavements is due to water in the asphalt concrete void system. It is proposed that most of the water problems occur when voids are in the range of about 5% to 12%. Thus, the term "pessimum" voids is used to indicate that range (opposite of optimum). In order to evaluate the hypothesis and the numerous variables, the Environmental Conditioning System (ECS) was designed and fabricated. The ECS consists of three subsystems: (1) fluid conditioning, where the specimen is subjected to predetermined levels of water, air, or vapor and permeability is measured; (2) an environmental cabinet that controls the temperature and humidity and encloses the entire load frame; and (3) the loading system that determines resilient modulus (M[subscript n]) at various times during environmental cycling and also provides continuous repeated loading as needed. The ECS has been used to evaluate four core materials and also to investigate the relative importance of mixture variables thought to be significant. Many details regarding specimen preparation and testing procedures were evaluated during a "shakedown" of the ECS. As minor variables were resolved, a procedure emerged which appears to be reasonable and suitable. An experiment design for the four core mixtures was developed, and the overall experiment design included three ranges of void ( <5% low; 5-12%, pessimum; > 12% high). Six-hour cycles of wet-hot (60° C) and wet-freeze ( -18° C) are the principle conditioning variables, while monitoring MR at 25° C before and between cycling. A conventional testing procedure (AASHTO T-283) was also used on the core mixtures to provide a baseline for comparison. Results to date show that the ECS is capable of discerning the relative differences in "performance" such as MR. Three hot cycles and one freeze cycle appear to be sufficient to determine the projected relative performance when comparing different aggregates, asphalts, void levels, loading, etc. Based on these results, a water conditioning procedure has been recommended and also a procedure for water conditioning specimens prior to testing in fatigue, rutting, and thermal cracking. / Graduation date: 1992

Sharpening the Boundaries of the Sequential Probability Ratio Test

In this thesis, we present an introduction to Wald’s Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) for binary outcomes. Previous researchers have investigated ways to modify the stopping boundaries that reduce the expected sample size for the test. In this research, we investigate ways to further improve these boundaries. For a given maximum allowable sample size, we develop a method intended to generate all possible sets of boundaries. We then find the one set of boundaries that minimizes the maximum expected sample size while still preserving the nominal error rates. Once the satisfying boundaries have been created, we present the results of simulation studies conducted on these boundaries as a means for analyzing both the expected number of observations and the amount of variability in the sample size required to make a decision in the test.

A Test Data Evolution Strategy under Program Changes

Since the cost of software testing has continuously accounted for large proportion of the software development total cost, automatic test data generation becomes a hot topic in recent software testing research. These researches attempt to reduce the cost of software testing by generating test data automatically, but they are discussed only for the single version programs not for the programs which are needed re-testing after changing. On the other hand, the regression testing researches discuss about how to re-test programs after changing, but they don¡¦t talk about how to generate test data automatically. Therefore, we propose an automatic test data evolution strategy in this paper. We use the method of regression testing to find out the part of programs which need re-testing, then automatic evolutes the test data by hybrid genetic algorithm. According to the experiment result, our strategy has the same or better testing ability but needs less cost than the other strategies.

Unifying regression testing with mutation testing

Software testing is the most commonly used methodology for validating quality of software systems. Conceptually, testing is simple, but in practice, given the huge (practically infinite) space of inputs to test against, it requires solving a number of challenging problems, including evaluating and reusing tests efficiently and effectively as software evolves. While software testing research has seen much progress in recent years, many crucial bugs still evade state-of-the-art approaches and cause significant monetary losses and sometimes are responsible for loss of life. My thesis is that a unified, bi-dimensional, change-driven methodology can form the basis of novel techniques and tools that can make testing significantly more effective and efficient, and allow us to find more bugs at a reduced cost. We propose a novel unification of the following two dimensions of change: (1) real manual changes made by programmers, e.g., as commonly used to support more effective and efficient regression testing techniques; and (2) mechanically introduced changes to code or specifications, e.g., as originally conceived in mutation testing for evaluating quality of test suites. We believe such unification can lay the foundation of a scalable and highly effective methodology for testing and maintaining real software systems. The primary contribution of my thesis is two-fold. One, it introduces new techniques to address central problems in both regression testing (e.g., test prioritization) and mutation testing (e.g., selective mutation testing). Two, it introduces a new methodology that uses the foundations of regression testing to speed up mutation testing, and also uses the foundations of mutation testing to help with the fault localization problem raised in regression testing. The central ideas are embodied in a suite of prototype tools. Rigorous experimental evaluation is used to validate the efficacy of the proposed techniques using a variety of real-world Java programs. / text

Investigating the impact of a mixed-format item pool on optimal test designs for multistage testing

The multistage testing (MST) has drawn increasing attention as a balanced format of adaptive testing that takes advantages of both fully-adaptive computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and paper-and-pencil (P\&P) tests. Most previous studies on MST have focused on purely dichotomous or polytomous item formats although the mixture of two item types (i.e., mixed-format) provides desirable psychometric properties by combining the strength of both item types. Given the dearth of studies investigating the characteristics of mixed-format MST, the current study conducted a simulation to identify important design factors impacting the measurement precision of mixed-format MST. The study considered several factors-namely, total points (40 and 60), MST structures (1-2-2 and 1-3-3), the proportion of polytomous items (10%, 30%, 50% and 70%), and the routing module design (purely dichotomous and a mixture of dichotomous and polytomous items) resulting in 32 total conditions. A total of 100 replications were performed, and 1,000 normally distributed examinees were generated in each replication. The performance of MST was evaluated in terms of the precision of ability estimation across the wide range of the scale. The study found that the longer test produced greater measurement precision while the 1-3-3 structure performed better than 1-2-2 structure. In addition, a larger proportion of polytomous items resulted in lower measurement precision through the reduced test information during the test construction. The interaction between the large proportion of polytomous items and the purely dichotomous routing module design was identified. Overall, the two factors of test length and the MST structure impacted the ability estimation, whereas the impact of the proportion of polytomous items and routing module design mirrored the item pool characteristic. / text
