Sensory dominance : an experiment across cultures

Physical and intellectual differences in the home environment of Xhosa and White children suggested that the interaction of touch and vision in situations of sensory conflict and the development of dominance may be different in children from these homes. Children aged 5-13 years were tested on apparatus which created a conflict of tactual and visual judgement about the perceived size of the stimulus. Xhosa and White subjects performed similarly except when only tactual judgement was allowed and the Xhosa group were less influenced by touch. The study concludes that for children touch and vision contribute equally to the resolution of sensory conflict when both senses are active in size-judgements and when only one mode is allowed for judging then the resolution is biased towards this mode. This outcome is different from that of experiments with adults and has implications for theories derived from them.

Dynamic properties of an undisturbed clay from resonant column tests

The dynamic properties of clay deposits under seismic or wave loading conditions must be well understood to assure dynamic stability of structures founded on such soil. The dynamic shear modulus and damping appear to be a complex function of many variables, and a wide range of values have been reported in the literature. Consequently, considerable uncertainty exists in choosing the appropriate values of shear modulus and damping for a particular problem. This thesis presents a study of the influence of various factors on the shear modulus and damping of a marine clay using a resonant column/torsional shear device. In particular, the influence of factors such as shear strain amplitude, effective confining stress, stress history, frequency (strain rate), and secondary time-dependent behaviour are examined. The pore pressure response is also studied. The shear modulus was found to degrade for shear strains above 0.005%. The strain dependency was found to be well represented by a single normalized modulus reduction curve regardless of the confining pressure or overconsolidation ratio. Slower strain rates resulted in smaller values of shear modulus. Of the variables studied, the duration of sample confinement was found to be the most imporant factor affecting the material damping. Above 0.005% strain, the damping of the marine clay increased with shearing strain amplitude. No significant effect of confining pressure and stress history on damping was observed at any strain level. As well, the material damping was found to be relatively independent of loading frequency. Both the shear wave velocity and damping obtained in this study were found to be consistent with the in situ values determined using the seismic cone penetration test. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Head losses resulting from flow through wyes and manifolds

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the head losses in wyes and manifolds of conventional type, both with and without an internal tie-rod at the theoretical centre of the wye. These wyes and manifolds, having 45°, 60° and 90° subtending angles of the wyes, were symmetrical about the longitudinal axis of the main pipe. The apparatus and method of testing used in the tests are described. The experiment spans a range of Reynold's numbers from 85,000 to 420,000 in the influent main pipe. The analysis of experimental data is based on the energy equation of Bernoulli for the one-dimensional condition. The results of the tests are given in both tabular and graphical form. It appears that the coefficient of the form loss (the ratio of the form loss of a wye or manifold to the velocity head in the main pipe) is a function of the proportional flow of water through the branches, the size of the tie-rod used and the subtending angle of the wye. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Laterally loaded wood compression members : finite element and reliability analysis

This thesis consists of two parts. The first part describes the analysis and implementation of a finite element computer model for the general prediction of failure of wood members in bending or in combined bending and axial compression. Both instability and material strength failures are included. The program is verified using available analytical and test results. A good agreement with the results predicted by this program is observed. The second part describes a procedure for the structural reliability evaluation of a compression member assuming random loads and material variables. The program developed here for the reliability study links the finite element program and the Rackwitz-Fiessler algorithm for the calculation of the reliability index β. The gradient of the failure function, which is a necessary input to the Rackwitz-Fiessler algorithm, is computed numerically using the finite element routine. The results of the reliability study for a typical column problem are compared against the available results obtained by following the code procedures [as outlined in CAN3-086.1-M84 (1984)] for different slenderness ratios. A performance factor ɸ⍴ = 0.75, for compression members of any length is recommended in order to obtain a more accurate and consistent level of reliability in the design process. Research dilatometer testing in sands and in clayey deposits

The development of Marchetti's flat dilatometer, method of testing, changes of Marchetti's (1980,1981) original correlations and Schmertmann's (1982,1983) proposed correlations are briefly described. Factors affecting results of the dilatometer test (DMT) are discussed. In order to improve the understanding of the Marchetti dilatometer test (DMT), an electronic research dilatometer was developed at UBC. The research dilatometer can measure; pore pressure at the center of the membrane, membrane displacement, applied pressure, pushing force and verticality. Test results obtained from the research dilatometer in sand and in clayey deposits at 4 sites in the Lower Mainland of B.C. are presented. Soil parameters interpretated using Marchetti's (1980,1981) and Schmertmann's (1982,1983) correlations are discussed. Comparison is made to other in-situ testing methods such as cone penetration test, vane shear test and pressuremeter test.
