Solo dwarf galaxy survey: the Sagittarius dwarf irregular galaxy

Higgs, Clare 13 April 2016 (has links)
Galaxy evolution depends on a diverse suite of factors, from the environment in which the galaxy exists to the number of supernovae that explode throughout its history. The structure and stellar populations present will also be altered by a galaxy's merger history, stellar mass, star formation rate, among other influences. Some factors, like mergers, are dependent on the environment of the galaxy, while others, like feedback from star formation, are intrinsic to the galaxy themselves. Dwarf galaxies are sensitive to many of these factors due to their smaller masses, hence shallower potential wells. Dwarfs are also interesting in themselves as the least massive structures that can form stars, forming the faint limit of galaxy types. There is some indication that the evolutionary pathway of dwarfs might be different than their more massive counterparts. Indeed, some dwarfs may be the stripped remnants of larger galaxy after a major interaction. Regardless, dwarfs are thought to be the building blocks of larger galaxies via hierarchical galaxy formation and understanding these small dwarfs helps us build a more complete picture of galaxy formation and evolution at all masses. As dwarfs generally have low stellar mass, they are very faint. Our most complete sample of dwarfs is therefore restricted to those that are nearby. These nearby systems are dominated by dwarfs satellite to the Milky Way and M31. However, the evolution of these satellites will be greatly influenced by their massive host. By studying nearby isolated dwarfs, we can try to separate the secular evolutionary processes of dwarfs from the influence of their larger host. Additionally, stellar populations can be resolved in these nearby galaxies, and so their structures can be probed to much fainter regimes than integrated light studies allow. The Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy (Sag DIG) is one of the most isolated, low mass galaxies, located at the edge of the Local Group. Its isolation from other galaxies coupled with its relative proximity provide an excellent opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of this low mass system. We preform an in-depth analysis of its resolved stellar populations and its structural properties as the first galaxy in the larger dataset, Solitary Local Dwarfs Survey (Solo). Solo is a wide field photometric study targeting every isolated dwarf galaxy within 3 Mpc of the Milky Way. Solo is based on (u)gi multi-band imaging from CFHT/MegaCam for northern targets, and Magellan/Megacam for southern targets. All galaxies fainter than M ~ -18 (in the V band) situated beyond the nominal virial radius of the Milky Way and M31 (> 300 kpc) are included in this volume-limited sample, for a total of 42 targets. For Sag DIG, we provide updated estimates of its central surface brightness and integrated luminosity, and trace its surface brightness profile to a level fainter than 30 mag./sq.arcsec. Sag DIG is well described by a highly elliptical (disk-like) system following a single component Sersic model. However, a low-level distortion is present at the outer edges of the galaxy that, were Sag DIG not so isolated, would likely be attributed to some kind of previous tidal interaction. Further, we find evidence of an extremely low level, extended distribution of stars beyond ~5 arcmins (> 1.5 kpc) that suggests Sag DIG may be embedded in a very low density stellar halo. We compare the stellar and HI structures of Sag DIG, and discuss results for this galaxy in relation to other isolated, dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group. Sag DIG, and the similarly isolated dwarf Aquarius, both have HI distributions that are more circular than their stellar components. In contrast, Wolf - Lundmark - Mellote (WLM), another isolated but slightly more massive dwarf, has stellar and HI components that trace each other well. Sag DIG and Aquarius also differ in that there is no signature of rotation in the HI of Sag DIG, while there is clear rotation in both the HI and stellar component for Aquarius. These preliminary comparisons demonstrate some of the potential analysis which will be possible on a much larger scale with the full Solo Survey. / Graduate / 0606 / higgs@uvic.ca

Lightning on exoplanets and brown dwarfs

Hodosán, Gabriella January 2017 (has links)
Lightning is an important electrical phenomenon, known to exist in several Solar System planets. Amongst others, it carries information on convection and cloud formation, and may be important for pre-biotic chemistry. Exoplanets and brown dwarfs have been shown to host environments appropriate for the initiation of lightning discharges. In this PhD project, I aim to determine if lightning on exoplanets and brown dwarfs can be more energetic than it is known from Solar System planets, what are the most promising signatures to look for, and if these "exo-lightning" signatures can be detected from Earth. This thesis focuses on three major topics. First I discuss a lightning climatology study of Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus. I apply the obtained lightning statistics to extrasolar planets in order to give a first estimate on lightning occurrence on exoplanets and brown dwarfs. Next, I introduce a short study of potential lightning activity on the exoplanet HAT-P-11b, based on previous radio observations. Related to this, I discuss a first estimate of observability of lightning from close brown dwarfs, with the optical Danish Telescope. The final part of my project focuses on a lightning radio model, which is applied to study the energy and radio power released from lightning discharges in hot giant gas planetary and brown dwarf atmospheres. The released energy determines the observability of signatures, and the effect lightning has on the local atmosphere of the object. This work combines knowledge obtained from planetary and earth sciences and uses that to learn more about extrasolar systems. My main results show that lightning on exoplanets may be more energetic than in the Solar System, supporting the possibility of future observations and detection of lightning activity on an extrasolar body. My work provides the base for future radio, optical, and infrared search for "exo-lightning".

An investigation of the evolutionary diversification of a recent radiation of dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion) from KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa

Da Silva, Jessica Marie 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An important prerequisite for evolutionary change is variability in natural populations; however, when phenotypic and molecular rates of change differ, species delimitation is problematic. Such discordance has been identified in a recent radiation of dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion) from KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. This radiation is comprised of several phenotypic forms, two of which have been classified taxonomically – Bradypodion melanocephalum and Bradypodion thamnobates. Early phylogenetic analysis did not support the forms primarily because geographic sampling and the set of molecular markers used were appropriate for detecting deep divergences and, therefore, less effective for understanding species boundaries within a recent radiation. In this radiation, the forms are allopatric, occupy different habitats, and vary in size and colouration, suggesting local adaptation and ecological speciation. To test this hypothesis, morphometric and habitat data were collected for each form to examine ecologically relevant morphological differences that reflect differential habitat use. Morphological differences were then associated with functional adaptations by testing locomotor performance and bite force. Next, fine-scale genetic sampling was used to examine lineage diversification using a combination of mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites. Spatial information was incorporated into these analyses to quantify the genetic effects of landscape barriers on genetic structure. Finally, ecological niche modelling was used to examine the abiotic factors involved in shaping the climatic niches of these chameleons, and to gain insight into their biogeographic history. Results show morphological distinctions between phenotypic forms, with corresponding differences in performance, indicating functional adaptations to habitats, which can be broadly classified as either open- or closed-canopy vegetation. Specifically, chameleons in open-canopy habitats have proportionally smaller forces and forefoot grip strengths. Varying degrees of sexual dimorphism were detected, with the closed-canopy forms being more dimorphic than the open-canopy forms. This suggests that sexual selection is the predominant force within the closed-canopy habitat, which are more protected from aerial predators, thereby enabling them to invest in dimorphic traits for communication; while, in open-canopy habitats, natural selection is the predominant force, ultimately enforcing their overall diminutive body size and constraining performance. Genetic structure was observed, with the mitochondrial DNA revealing three genetic clusters and the microsatellites revealing seven. This likely reflects the different mutation rates and modes of inheritance between these two markers. Three of the microsatellite clusters were supported by morphological and ecological data and should, therefore, be recognised as separate species. The remaining microsatellite clusters showed discordance with the ecomorphological data; however, given their genetic distinctiveness, they should be recognized as separate conservation units. The climatic niches of the three proposed species showed high to moderate levels of climatic stability, while the four proposed conservation units showed low climatic stability. These results indicate that this species complex is affected by both climatic niche conservatism and lability, which could explain the observed patterns of morphological and genetic diversity. In summary, these results support the hypothesis of ecological speciation within this radiation.

Local Volume TiNy Titans: gaseous dwarf–dwarf interactions in the Local Universe

Pearson, Sarah, Besla, Gurtina, Putman, Mary E., Lutz, Katharina A., Fernández, Ximena, Stierwalt, Sabrina, Patton, David R., Kim, Jinhyub, Kallivayalil, Nitya, Johnson, Kelsey, Sung, Eon-Chang 21 June 2016 (has links)
In this paper, we introduce the Local Volume TiNy Titans sample (LV-TNT), which is a part of a larger body of work on interacting dwarf galaxies: TNT . This LV-TNT sample consists of 10 dwarf galaxy pairs in the Local Universe (< 30 Mpc from Milky Way), which span mass ratios of M-*,M- 1/M-*,M- 2 < 20, projected separations < 100 kpc, and pair member masses of log(M-*/M-aS (TM)) < 9.9. All 10 LV-TNT pairs have resolved synthesis maps of their neutral hydrogen, are located in a range of environments and captured at various interaction stages. This enables us to do a comparative study of the diffuse gas in dwarf-dwarf interactions and disentangle the gas lost due to interactions with haloes of massive galaxies, from the gas lost due to mutual interaction between the dwarfs. We find that the neutral gas is extended in the interacting pairs when compared to non-paired analogues, indicating that gas is tidally pre-processed. Additionally, we find that the environment can shape the H i distributions in the form of trailing tails and that the gas is not unbound and lost to the surroundings unless the dwarf pair is residing near a massive galaxy. We conclude that a nearby, massive host galaxy is what ultimately prevents the gas from being re-accreted. Dwarf-dwarf interactions thus represent an important part of the baryon cycle of low-mass galaxies, enabling the 'parking' of gas at large distances to serve as a continual gas supply channel until accretion by a more massive host.
