Two sides to staging public space : enhancing civic function and establishing symbolic content to the Vancouver Art Gallery landscapeGuppy, Graeme Blair 05 1900 (has links)
This paper explores urban design possibilities for the enhancement of the Vancouver Art Gallery landscape. It is
understood that urban public places are necessary for not only the daily functioning of society, but as venues of and for
celebrations, demonstrations, and communication. All public urban spaces have the potential to serve as significant
locations of human experience. The designed urban landscape should have the capacity to elicit response and
heighten our perceptions, thereby furthering our understanding of the world. Understanding the Vancouver Art Gallery
landscape as a central urban space of significant civic importance, it is necessary that its design illuminate the
interactions between humans and the physical world - the actors, the audience, and the stage.
A literature review is conducted in order to discern possible connections between museum processes and designed
landscapes. Analogies are drawn between the processes and display of art within and around galleries and museums,
and the cultural meanings associated with these displays. These processes also reveal themselves in the designed
landscape. Second, museum-landscape analogs are proposed, and from these, precedents are researched in order to
identify criteria that support and reinforce these analogs. These analogs are typologies that may serve to inform the
urban design, and landscape architectural process. In response to the research, the Vancouver Art Gallery landscape
is designed according to one of the types (analogs) identified - Landscape as Theatre. The design provides a model
for the expression of the theatrical aspects of urban life that contribute to the vibrancy and cultural richness of the
urban landscape.
The conclusions drawn herein are suggestive of urban design enhancement opportunities that exist within central
downtown Vancouver, in particular the Vancouver Art Gallery landscape. It is recognized that significant investment in
our urban spaces is a requirement for ensuring the successful evolution of urban life. In addition to the enhancement of
human experiences within the city, successful urban projects that elicit international acclaim and recognition further the
economic growth of, and investment in the city. Certainly, when public spaces are used and enjoyed steadily and
repeatedly the experiences of places are enriched, and human experience is enhanced. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

The Remains of a PlaceFaulring, Lynn Marie 10 November 1999 (has links)
What makes a city exist? Is it movement, rhythm, symbols, texture, volume and time? Architecture should heighten the drama of living, walking gives a true scale of the city, creating an experience. Urban spaces must accommodate the individual. Movement systems determine the shape of the fields of influence; this varies in intensity with the degree of movement.
This thesis is an exploration into architecture of meaning, space and elements. These common elements change context and increase scale while recognizing the difference between inside and outside. This contrast supports meaning. The play of scale, hierarchy and patterns use space in different ways accommodating the individual. An existing condition is transformed and renovated. What entities are removed and what entities will remain?
This art museum is permanent and changing over time, architecture that transforms. A strong symbolic form, the cube, establishes an entity within the urban fabric. A sequence of sensations in size, scale, color, texture and light motivate the space. Tension is created between two bodies, the exterior brick shell and interior steel framework. Natural light penetrates a double height space of new elegantly structured steel with reinforced concrete stepping platforms. The existing wood columns overlap into this steel structure creating a place for movement.
Juxtaposition is created between new construction and the existing. Light steel opposes heavy wood while transparency opposes opacity. Steel frames with concrete slabs independent of the existing shell and cantilevering precast concrete boxes oppose wood timbers and brick bearing walls. Concrete floors and gaps created where they meet walls oppose wood floors touching the walls. This completes this thesis. / Master of Architecture

It is a half-material imaginary architecture that guides the movement of a viewer. Or takes place to stop the viewer in me creating environment. Construction visually "disturbs" the space to a minimum, but the movement of the viewer will be completely different.

Kreativní centrum – Kopřivnice / Creative centre - KoprivniceRušarová, Eva Unknown Date (has links)
The diploma thesis proposes a design for a creative hub in the town of Kopřivnice. The site would create an ideal environment for research, exhibitions and discussions about major social issues through various forms of art (e.g. visual art, literature, performing arts). The area of interest is situated in the centre of Kopřivnice, defined by the Štefánikova street from the southwest and by the railway from the northeast, which forms a boundary between the Tatra plant area and the rest of the town. Considering the historical context and the location, the area has potential, which could be fulfilled by a realisation of the creative hub of contemporary art. With my proposal, I try to showcase the actual value of the place and thus enrich the historical construction of bricked halls with the dynamics which organic curves of a new auditorium and the vertical aspect of an observation tower provide. The thesis includes an analysis of trends and examples of similar hubs for contemporary art and an urban study, including solutions for a connection to surroundings, a definition of the possible functional use of neighbouring areas and a vision for potential restoration of the area.

Application of Alkylsilane Self-Assembled Monolayers for Cell Patterning and Development of Biolocial Microelectromechanical SystemsWilson, Kerry 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Advances in microfabrication and surface chemistry techniques have provided a new paradigm for the creation of in vitro systems for studying problems in biology and medicine in ways that were previously not practical. The ability to create devices with micro- to nano-scale dimensions provides the opportunity to non-invasively interrogate and monitor biological cells and tissue in large arrays and in a high-throughput manner. These systems hold the potential to, in time, revolutionize the way problems in biology and medicine are studied in the form of point-of-care devices, lab-on-chip devices, and biological microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS). With new in vitro models, it will be possible to reduce the overall cost of medical and biological research by performing high-throughput experiments while maintaining control over a wide variety of experimental variables. A critical aspect of developing these sorts of systems, however, is controlling the device/tissue interface. The surface chemistry of cell-biomaterial and protein-biomaterial interactions is critical for long-term efficacy and function of such devices. The work presented here is focused on the application of surface and analytical chemistry techniques for better understanding the interface of biological elements with silica substrates and the development a novel Bio-MEMS device for studying muscle and neuromuscular biology. A novel surface patterning technique based on the use of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) silane self-assembled monolayer (SAM) as a cytophobic surface and the amine-terminated silane diethyeletriamine (DETA) as a cytophilic surface was developed for patterning a variety of cell types (e.g. skeletal muscle, and neural cells) over long periods of time (over 40 days) with high fidelity to the patterns. This method was then used to pattern embryonic rat skeletal muscle and motor neurons onto microfabricated silicon cantilevers creating a novel biological microelectromechanical system (BioMEMS) for studying muscle and the neuromuscular junction. This device was then used to study the effect of exogenously applied substances such as growth factors and toxins. Furthermore, a whispering-gallery mode (WGM) biosensor was developed for measuring the adsorption of various proteins onto glass microspheres coated with selected silane SAMS commonly used in BioMEMS system. With this biosensor it was possible to measure the kinetics of protein adsorption onto alkylsilane SAMS, in a real-time and label-free manner.

Hedvig's galleryLandén, Amanda January 2022 (has links)
The architecture on Drottningholmsmalmen is protected as it is essential in understanding the function of the castle from the 16th century onwards and must be preserved as much as possible. Most buildings from the 1950s until the 21st century carry high architectural quality and is a time document that provide an understanding of Swedish modernist architecture during the 20th century.A requirement for the maintenance of the high cultural-historical elements is the understanding of the value. In order for the buildings not to decay, there should be an exchange for the residents that is more than restrictions. When the area was built, the idea was to create a city-like structure with accommodations for the people working at the castle and the royal guests. Hedvig’s gallery, named after Queen Hedvig Eleonora, creates a new destination on Lovön and brings attention to the residential area. The building aims to bind the areas adjacent to the castle together and contains a gallery, a restaurant, chambré separée and a small shop. Its main structure consists of horizontal brick walls that are inspired by the grid-structure that the King first laid out for Drottningholmsmalmen.
