It ultimately results in beauty. The simplistic embodies nothing more than obviousness and boredom. My aim is to strive for simple beauty.
Concerning objects and architecture, to simplify means to reduce by eliminating the superficial and the superfluous, to unmask what is essential. Quality materials and craftsmanship are prerequisites. This project is imagined as a community art gallery located in the city of Asheville, North Carolina. The primary rooms within the building are demonstrated through perspective drawings, models and photographs. The character of each room was established through the spatial composition of pattern, color and form in light. Continuous and discontinuous surfaces are shown as floors, ceilings and walls. Windows, doors, and stairs were discovered rather than added. The plan of the building was found rather than predetermined. / Master of Architecture

The site chosen for this thesis project is located in downtown Blacksburg, Virginia. It consists of a 30'x110' infill lot and an alley running parallel to it. An initial desire to blur the boundary between the alley and the proposed building led to a study of the potential of parallel planes overlapped along the shared border. Representation of these planes in two dimensions allowed almost simultaneous perceptions of multiple spatial and geometrical configurations among them. The architectural consequences of this phenomenon became the main subject of inquiry. Exploration through silkscreen prints and model studies culminated in the design of an outdoor art gallery. / Master of Architecture

The purpose of this descriptive study was to establish a comprehensive and representative portrait of written policies with respect to displaying art in student unions in the United States. This study was designed to answer the following question: What policies are implemented in member colleges and universities of the Association of College Unions International with respect to the display of art in galleries and public spaces in student unions in the United States?
One hundred institutions were selected for study by a stratified random sampling of the 1997 membership list of the Association of College Unions International. A total of 67 institutions responded including 16 research universities, 33 comprehensive state universities, 15 liberal arts colleges, and three community colleges. The result of the document analysis demonstrated that the majority of institutions in the sample, 60 percent, do not have a policy with respect to displaying art in the gallery or public spaces within the unions. Only 24 percent of the institutions in the study have such a written policy. The remaining institutions, 16 percent, have gallery mission statements or exhibition contracts. All policies received were classified according to the a priori evaluation criteria set in the study. Representative policy statements were formulated from the information received. / Master of Arts

Os micro-ressonadores que suportam whispering gallery modes têm atraído a atenção da comunidade científica devido a sua grande capacidade de confinar a luz, propriedade que faz dessas estruturas plataformas ideais para o desenvolvimento de pesquisa fundamental como interação da radiação com a matéria e óptica não linear. Além disso, suas características como operação em frequências do visível e de telecomunicações, facilidade de integração e alta sensitividade os tornam extremamente flexíveis para aplicações que vão desde filtros ópticos até sensores. Neste trabalho, demonstramos a fabricação de tais micro-ressonadores via fotopolimerização por absorção de dois fótons (FA2F). Esta técnica apresenta uma série de vantagens para a confecção de micro-dispositivos, sendo elas a capacidade de resolução inferior ao limite de difração, a flexibilidade de formas e ainda, a possibilidade de incorporar compostos de interesse à matriz polimérica a fim de introduzir novas funcionalidades ao material que compõe a estrutura final. Ademais, diferentes polímeros podem ser utilizados para a fabricação das microestruturas, tornando a técnica viável para uma vasta gama de aplicações. As microestruturas poliméricas que fabricamos são micro-cilindros ocos de boa integridade estrutural com 45 μm de diâmetro externo e 100 nm de rugosidade de superfície, o que as torna potencialmente aplicáveis como micro-ressonadores para frequências de operação típicas de telecomunicações. A fim de acoplar luz nessas estruturas, em colaboração com a Universidade de Valência, na Espanha, montamos um aparato de acoplamento. Neste aparato, a luz proveniente de uma fonte de luz centrada em 1540 nm é acoplada nos micro-ressonadores via campo evanescente por meio do uso de uma fibra óptica estirada de 1.5 μm de diâmetro. A potência transmitida é guiada para um analisador de espectro óptico, onde é possível identificar os modos ressonantes, representados como picos de atenuação com free spectral range em torno de 9.8 nm. Ao término desse projeto, um aparato similar foi montado no Grupo de Fotônica do IFSC/USP, a partir do qual pudemos medir os modos ressonantes tanto de fibras ópticas estiradas quanto dos micro-cilindros poliméricos. A finesse dos micro-ressonadores poliméricos caracterizados varia de 2.51 a 4.35, sendo da mesma ordem de grandeza do valor reportado na literatura para ressonadores de alta performance fabricados por FA2F a partir da mesma formulação de resina polimérica que utilizamos. / Whispering gallery modes microresonators have been attracting increasing interest due to their ability to strongly confine light within small dielectric volumes. This property is quite useful for basic research involving light-matter interaction and nonlinear optics, but their applications go beyond that. The ease of fabrication, on-chip integration and operation at telecommunication frequencies make them suitable for a variety of practical applications, including photonic filters and sensing. In the current work, we demonstrate the fabrication of such resonators via two-photon polymerization. Using this technique, complex 3D structures with submicrometer feature size can be produced. Besides, the flexibility of geometry and the possibility of incorporating a variety of additional materials, such as organic compounds make it a powerful tool for the fabrication of microresonators. The microstructures we have fabricated are 45 μm outer diameter hollow microcylinders, with good structural integrity and sidewall roughness estimated in 100 nm, which make their application as microresonators feasible in the near infrared wavelength regime. In order to couple light within these microresonators, an experimental setup was built at University of Valencia to implement the coupling. In this setup, light from a 1540 nm-centered broadband source was coupled into the fabricated microresonators via evanescent field using a 1.5 μm waist tapered fiber. The transmitted light was then guided to an optical spectral analyzer, where it was possible to measure resonances, represented as attenuation peaks, with free spectral range of about 9.8 nm. Afterwards, a similar experimental setup was assembled in the Photonics group at IFSC/USP, where we could observe resonances of both tapered optical fibers and the polymeric microresonators fabricated by means of two-photon polymerization. The finesse of the polymeric microresonators was estimated in 4.35, being in the same order of the finesse reported in the literature for high performance microring resonators fabricated using the same polymeric resin.

This study examines the art practices and management of the National Art Galleries of Australia and New Zealand in the period between the wars, 1918-1939.It does so in part to account for the pervading conservatism and narrow corridors of aesthetic acceptability evident in their acquisitions and in many of their dealings. It aims to explore the role of Britishness, through an examination of the influence of the London Royal Academy of Art, within theses emerging official art institutions. This study argues that the dominant artistic ideology illustrated in these National Gallery collections was determined by a social elite, which was, at its heart, British. Its collective taste was predicated on models established in Great Britain and on traditions and on connoisseurship. This visual instruction in the British ideal of culture, as seen through the Academy, was regarded as a worthy aspiration, one that was at once both highly nationalistic and also a tool of Empire unity. This ideal was nationalistic in the sense that it marked the desire of these Boards to claim for the nation membership of the world's civil society, whilst also acknowleging that the vehicle to do so was through an enhanced alliance with British art and culture. The ramifications of an Empire-first aesthetic model were tremendous. The model severely constrained taste in domestic art, limited the participation of indigenous peoples and shaped the reception of modernism. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The doctoral thesis Czech public art collections and the acquisition policy during the normalization era deals with the topic of domestic institutional operation in 1970s and 1980s, with specific focus on activities of galleries incorporated in the national, hierarchically organized network of art institutions. The research of these acquisition activities uncovers composition of the works of art acquired this way. It finds aspects in which individual institutions differed and detects the reasons behind these differences. Besides the acquisition process itself, the thesis also outlines the circumstances of establishment of the gallery network and summarizes its activities in more tolerant 1960s based on various material sources and oral history. The acquisition policy of galleries as such is analysed in the thesis covering the period from the beginning of the year 1970, when the resolution of the turning meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in April 1969 started to be fulfilled, until the end of the year 1989. Geographically, it is limited to the Czech territory.
