A Performer's Guide to John Harbison's 'Four Songs of Solitude'

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: John Harbison is one of the most prominent composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He has made major contributions in all areas of classical music, including operas, symphonies, chamber music, choral works, and vocal pieces.Among his vast output is 'Four Songs of Solitude,' his only composition (to date) for solo violin. Though the piece is beautiful and reflective in nature, its inherent technical and musical difficulties present challenges to violinists preparing the piece. There is no published edition of 'Four Songs of Solitude' that includes bowings and fingerings, and violinists used to practicing and performing the études and repertoire of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries may have difficulty determining how to successfully navigate the music. This paper examines the piece in detail, providing an analytic description of the music and suggestions for practice. An interview with the composer yielded many insights into the structural and harmonic events of the songs, and the composer's interpretive suggestions are given alongside technical suggestions by the author. The solo violin has a centuries-long legacy, and some of the most performed repertoire exists in the medium. 'Four Songs of Solitude' is a demanding set of pieces that stands out in late twentieth-century violin music. Providing information about the piece directly from the composer and suggestions for practice and performance increases the accessibility of the work for violinists seeking to bring it to the concert stage. / Dissertation/Thesis / D.M.A. Music 2012

Etude et conception de guides d'onde et d'antennes cornets à métamatériaux / Study and design of waveguides and horn antennas with metamaterials

Byrne, Benedikt 08 November 2016 (has links)
In space applications, one of the biggest challenges is to reduce the size and mass of equipment, in order to reduce the costs of the rocket launch. For RF components, this has to be done without lowering RF performance (directivity, crosspolarization, single-mode bandwidth, etc.). The challenge is all the more problematic in the case of used horn antennas and waveguides because of their relatively large size. It has been shown that the use of anisotropic surfaces (i.e. corrugations and metamaterials) on the inside walls of guided RF structure makes it possible to influence and control the way electromagnetic waves travel, enabling new devices with radically different and improved performances : for waveguides, reduction of the cuto&# 64256; frequency ; for horn antennas, improvement of the directivity or a reduction of the side lobes. A state of the art of previous work done on metamaterial horn antennas pointed out that, even if the obtained and presented results seem very promising, the procedure to obtain the optimized RF structure is very time-consuming and requires considerable computer resources. The main contribution of this PhD work was to develop a new methodology based on the analytical Modal Expansion Theory (MET) for waveguides with anisotropic walls. This methodology makes it possible to optimize very rapidly the dimensions of the metamaterial surfaces adjusted to the required application. A metamaterial waveguide and antenna prototype have been designed, realized and measured thanks to this methodology. The results obtained demonstrate the usefulness, effectiveness and general applicability of the method developed for the design of RF structures with anisotropic walls.

Jönsson, Sandra, Melin, Therese January 2003 (has links)

Combating corruption in customs through trade facilitation : case of East Africa community

Ntabazi, Sarah Mellisa 04 October 2010 (has links)
“The World Customs Organization Arusha Declaration for customs integrity proposes two elements to improve integrity: simplification of procedures, including automation, and adequate human resource management. The declaration, along with the Integrity Development Guide, a set of comprehensive integrity tools specifically designed to help customs administrations implement the principles contained in the Arusha Declaration, casts light on customs reform and modernization from the angle of fighting corruption, as improving integrity should be a cornerstone of any capacity building activities.” <ul> <li>Kunio Mikuriya, Deputy Secretary General, World Customs Organization In J.Edgardo C and S.Pradhan (eds) (2007) 367,The Many Faces of Corruption: Tracking Vulnerabilities at the Sector Level, Washington DC, World Bank.</li> </ul> Customs inefficiencies are well known to impede the integration of developing countries into the global economy. There are a number of bottlenecks to trading across borders. Among these bottlenecks, with their attendant costs, are: Excessive documentation, inadequate procedures and lack of audit-based controls; lack of risk assessment and management techniques; lack of modern infrastructure; lack of automation and use of computerized procedures; and lack of transparency. All these couples together create an environment rife with corruption as traders seek to process their transaction at whatever cost. Paying bribes then becomes the order of the day and result into an added cost to trading. In this era of globalization, an enormous demand has been placed on customs administrations especially in Africa to simplify their procedures so as to enable firms to participate meaningfully in international and regional trade. The complexity and costs of transactions, including corruption must be eliminated, thus the urgent need for trade facilitation. This study seeks to emphasize the potential of trade facilitation as a policy measure that can reduce the prevalence and negative effects of corruption in customs. While obviously not a cure-all for the wide variety of corrupt transactions taking place in customs administrations, this study will show that trade facilitation can nonetheless be of considerable help in dealing with corruption in customs. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Centre for Human Rights / unrestricted

Voříšek, Jan January 2009 (has links)
In the present work we study methodology of different kinds of sample surveys and their design in SAS software. Creating of SAS Enterprise Guide Add-In was the fundamental creative part of this work. This Add-In enables to compute important statistics of sample surveys, without need of being familiar with SAS code. Add-In was created in MSFT Visual Studio 2003 in C # language using a tamplate for Add-Ins provided by SAS. This work contains a general description of the creation of an Add-In as well as the description of the created Add-In for handling the sample surveys and its usage.

Uherčíková, Radka January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on current supply of guide services in the UNESCO cities in Morava region. Guide services in Třebíč are analysed more detailed. The main goal of the thesis is to find changes in supply of guide services, when the current situation is compared to the situation in 2005. I used the diploma thesis of former student of the University of Economics in Prague from 2005 for this comparison. The next goal is comparison of supply of guide services between each other UNESCO cities. In this comparison, the main attention is paid to Třebíč and its supply. It is analysed, how wide is the range of guide services and offer of language versions compared to other UNESCO cities in Morava region.

A Performance Guide to the Dramatic, Vocal, and Musical Challenges of Judith Weir’s Opera, King Harald’s Saga

Park, Sang Hee 08 1900 (has links)
Judith Weir (b. 1954) composed King Harald’s Saga: Grand Opera in Three Acts for Unaccompanied Solo Soprano Singing Eight Rôles (1979) for radio broadcast. She wrote the libretto for the opera based on Snorri Sturluson’s book, King Harald’s Saga. This opera illustrates Weir’s remarkable compositional style, including her treatment of the libretto in narrative style and her representation of multiple characters by one singer. Despite Weir’s fame as an opera composer, King Harald’s Saga is rarely performed owing to three major musical and performing challenges. These challenges are performer’s ability to delineate eight separate characters (dramatic challenges), to sing wide leaps and long melismas (vocal challenges), and to perform a cappella with wide leaps and complex rhythms (musical challenges). This dissertation presents a performance guide for the soprano addressing these three challenges and suggesting possible solutions. Such a guide will assist the soprano in preparing and performing this grand opera, which thus far has not received the due attention and appreciation of either performers or audiences.

A Performance Guide and Recordings for Four New Works for Saxophone Based on the Syrian Refugee Experience

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Throughout history composers have used music to depict their perception of the refugee experience. This project expands upon this idea through the commission and recording of four new works for saxophone. The compositions are Different Arks for solo alto saxophone by John Secunde, Rubble/Resolve for alto saxophone and piano by Jared Yackiw, Emerging Light for soprano saxophone and vibraphone by Alan Hankers, and Unam aeternam for solo alto saxophone and stereo playback by Ashlee Busch. For each work, this project provides performance guides, biographical contexts, program notes, and recordings. I hope to encourage artists to discover and facilitate creative ways to draw attention to migration around the world and contribute to the fight against racism and xenophobia. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020
