The piano teacher chamber opera in one actFeraru, Tudor 11 1900 (has links)
The thesis for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition consists of an original musical work, accompanied by an analytical document. “The Piano Teacher” is a chamber opera in one act, based on a libretto by the composer, adapted from the fantastic tale “With the Gypsy Girls” by Mircea Eliade. With a duration of approximately fifty minutes, the work calls for four singers (tenor, soprano, bass-baritone, mezzo-soprano) and fifteen instrumental parts (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion, piano, harp, two violins, viola, cello, contrabass). The aim was not only to set to music a symbolic story, but also to adopt a personal approach to the operatic genre. This approach proposes a less explicit plot, as well as minimal stage design. In adapting the story, the central character of the teacher receives an extensive music-dramaturgical role, while the other characters are assigned relatively equal supporting roles. The opera comprises a prelude and twelve short scenes, most of which unfold uninterruptedly. A thorough discussion of the nature, influences, and vocabulary of the opera accompanies the musical score. The analytical document concentrates on particular musical ideas, as well as on several cyclical elements, providing detailed exemplification to illustrate their use. Both the score and the analysis suggest possible approaches to the stage production of the opera.

Platinum-containing heterobimetallic lantern complexes prepared with thiocarboxylates: synthesis, structural, and magnetic characterization and synthesis characterization of magnetic metal oxide nanoparticlesBaddour, Frederick G. 12 August 2016 (has links)
Three Pt-based heterobimetallic lantern complexes of the form, [PtM(SAc)4(OH2)], M = Co (1), Ni (2), Zn (3), were prepared with thioacetate (SAc^-) bridging ligands that exhibit short Pt^...Pt interactions in the solid state. Three compounds with the form [PtM(SAc)4(3-NO2py)], M = Co (4), Ni (5), Zn (6) are formed upon reaction with 3-nitropyridine (3-NO2py) or alternatively the hydrated species 1--3 could be dehydrated to form the species [PtM(SAc)4], M = Co (7), Ni (8), Zn (9). Solid-state magnetism measurements indicate antiferromagnetic coupling of the paramagnetic 3d metal centers that can be attributed to the pathway established by the short Pt^...Pt contacts.
Additional families of thiocarboxylate lantern complexes were prepared via the reaction of 1--3 or 7--9 with nitrogen or oxygen donor ligands. Reaction of 7--9 with pyridine yielded complexes with the form [PtM(SAc)4(py)2], M = Co (10), Ni (11), Zn (12). Complexes 10--12 could be thermally converted to the complexes [PtM(SAc)4(py)], M = Co (13), Ni (14), Zn (15) respectively. Reactions with the 4-aminopyridine ligand (amp) yielded exclusively monopyridyl species of the form [PtM(SAc)4(amp)], M = Co (16), Ni (17), Zn (18). O-donor solvents bind the dehydrated core [PtM(SAc)4] to give the complexes [PtCo(SAc)4(DMSO)](DMSO), 19, and [PtNi(SAc)4(DMF)](DMF), 20. Several diamagnetic complexes were prepared with the form [PtM(SOCR)4OH2], R = CH3, M = Mg (21); R = C6H5, M = Mg (22), Ca (23), and Zn (24) to examine the effect of the 3d metal on the electronic environment as determined by ^195Pt NMR.
An additional family of complexes were prepared with pyrazine (pyz) linker ligands to form coordination polymers of the form [PtM(SAc)4(pyz)]n M = Co (25), Ni (26), Zn (27) and [PtM(SAc)4(pyz)0.5]2 M = Co (28), Ni (29), Zn (30). Two novel diplatinum complexes have been prepared with the 2,6-dimercaptopyridine (H2dmp) protoligand of the form [Pt2(Hdmp)4], 31, and [Pt2(phen)2(Hdmp)2], 32.
Finally, a facile synthesis for ricinoleic acid, RA, coated ferrite spinel nanoparticles MFe2O4 · RA, M = Mn (33), Co (34), Ni(35), Zn(36) has been developed. The ferrite spinels were prepared hydrothermally and the synthesis and characterization of these nanoparticles will be discussed.

ICAs ”Mina varor” : framgångsrik ”one-to-one marketing”?Frimodig, Erik, Nordström, Johan January 2008 (has links)

The demand for One-click purchasesJacobsson, Elvira January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate consumers’ attitudes against the technique one-click purchasing. One-click purchasing is a method allowing the customers to transact a purchase with only one click. The customer has entered the payment information necessary to complete the purchase at a previous occasion. Within the next buying opportunity, the customer can purchase products with one single click. The analysis and conclusions is based on both primary and secondary sources. The primary sources represent the result of a questionnaire performed with 200 respondents. The top findings in this study are that the one-click purchasing method is used on a regular basis and most of the consumers’ trust that the method correctly cares for personal information. However the conclusion is that the demand of the method is not high and it seems like the consumers does not care if the method is available upon payment completions or not.

The Impact of a One to One Laptop Program on the Self-Efficacy of Nine Middle School Students with Specific Learning DisabilitiesSteiner, Adam January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Richard Jackson / A significant body of research has examined the impact of technology on pedagogy (Cuban, 1999; Enyedy, 2014), student achievement (Schachter, 1999; Cheung & Slavin, 2013, OECD, 2015), and equity (Reich, Murnane & Willett, 2012; Van Deursen & Van Dijk, 2011) with both positive and negative results within each domain. Research has also examined the impact of technology on the success of students with disabilities in various domains (Corn, Tagsold, & Argueta, 2012; Hargreaves & Braun, 2012; Harris & Smith, 2004; Penuel, 2006). However, no research has assessed the impact of one to one technology, in particular, on the self-efficacy of students with specific learning disabilities in educational settings. This dissertation examined the experience of nine middle school students with specific learning disabilities in the first year of a one to one laptop program. Among the guiding questions for this research was the following: What characteristics of 1:1 programs present particular challenges or opportunities for students with learning disabilities? A series of interviews with students, parents, and teachers, as well as pre and post-surveys gauging student self-efficacy, were organized within the frame of activity theory and analyzed using a case-study narrative approach. Findings from the research suggest the presence of several critical conditions that support student self-efficacy in this one to one program. These critical conditions include the presence of a culture of collaboration, putting the needs of teachers first in terms of comfort with technology, providing a system of professional development for both students and teachers, encouraging the philosophy of a growth mindset in relation to technology, and adopting a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as a model for curriculum design that emphasizes equity through flexibility. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017. / Submitted to: Boston College. Development of Peptide Cyclization Strategies for Their Incorporation into One-Bead-One-Compound Peptide LibrariesBlair, Lauren Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jianmin Gao / Thesis advisor: Eranthie Weerapana / Cyclic peptides provide a privileged scaffold when optimizing interactions with various biological targets. Their rigidified structure decreases the entropic cost of binding by preorganizing residues in a fixed conformation, which may enhance binding affinity. These molecules occupy a larger chemical space than typical small molecule drugs and may provide good candidates for inhibiting protein-protein interactions or being able to interact with previously undruggable targets. Given the benefits of these structures we aim to develop a one-bead-one-compound peptide library for screening against relevant biological targets. Herein we describe several routes to achieving cyclic peptides through side chain interactions and head-to tail amide bond linkages. Additional considerations for the development of the on resin library such as linker strategies and sequencing methods will be discussed. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College. Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. / Discipline: Chemistry.
