Den svenska generalstaben som lärande organisation : kunskapsutvecklingen avseende strid om befästa ställningar under första världskriget / The Swedish General Staff as a learning organisation : knowledge development in trenchwarfare during the World War One

Lausevic, Vladan January 2014 (has links)
The intention of this essay is to study the Swedish General Staff as a learning organisation during the period of 1914-1918 based on the theoretical work developed by the philosopher Bertil Rolf. Previous international research on the Prussian/German General Staff has shown that it is considered to be the first learning organisation in history. The Swedish General Staff was based on the German General Staff model and the focus of this study is to compare the development the tactics in Germany and Sweden regarding defence and attack in trench warfare. The questions are: How were the possibilities for gathering and analysing informa-tion affected by the war? Which conclusions were made for trench warfare in Swedish conditions? What experiences from the war and exercises in Swedish army were implemented in manuals and training? The conclusion of the study is that the Swedish General Staff was functioning as a learning organisation during the WWI through the ability to follow the international development, mainly in the Central Powers, and by modifying the experiences to the prevailing Swedish strategic and tactical conditions. During the war the German experiences, mainly from the eastern front, were used as a model combining movement and trench warfare. The main reasons were that the conditions on the western front with the concentration of artillery and troops were considered as an anomaly. The learning was created by processing the war experiences and experiences from the annual field exercises in several studies. One additional condition for the learning process was the demanding selection process for the employment of new General Staff officers, a process which meant that only a very small number of officers annually were appointed to general staff officers.

A case study regarding the carbon footprint for one day trips to different ski destinations in the Jamtland region

Koloszyc, Hanna January 2016 (has links)
Currently, World is facing global warming, which threats especially winter tourism. Many glaciers started to melt significantly as well as winter seasons get warmer and shorter in many ski areas (Gilaberte-Búrdaloa, et al., 2014). It is a really important issue and challenge especially for ski resorts. However, in spite of ski resorts there are also millions of tourists visiting ski destinations every year. Due to that it should also be important to all those winter enthusiasts to know and reduce their own impacts on environment, if they still want to enjoy snow-based sports and natural beauty of a mountain environment. Due to that, this study chosen to focus on emissions from ski trips seeing form the perspective of the skier in one of the most famous ski region in Sweden. The carbon footprint concept was used to calculate and compare four trips to different ski destinations such as Åre, Vemdalen, Frösön and Storulvån. From each trip the following factors where considered: emissions from production of ski equipment, emissions from skier travel, from purchased electricity in the ski resort and from consumption of fuel by vehicles on the slopes. At least six transportation scenarios per destination were created to investigate possible modes of transportation and their impacts. The results showed that the total amount of carbon footprint per skier differed among the trips from 74.01 kg to 2.40 kg of CO₂-eq. per skier depends on the transportation scenario and destination. It was concluded that skier travel can be a huge source of emissions depending on the distance to chosen destination and type of the transport. However, it was found out that impact from skier travel as well as from ski equipment can be reduced by individual’s choices. Moreover, it was also concluded that the fuel consumed by vehicles on the slopes had a significant impact in all ski resorts and it should become the major issue for ski resorts to find new solutions and practices, which would reduce the amount of emissions.. /
2016-08-30

Design of a practical model-observer-based image quality assessment method for x-ray computed tomography imaging systems

Tseng, Hsin-Wu, Fan, Jiahua, Kupinski, Matthew A. 28 July 2016 (has links)
The use of a channelization mechanism on model observers not only makes mimicking human visual behavior possible, but also reduces the amount of image data needed to estimate the model observer parameters. The channelized Hotelling observer (CHO) and channelized scanning linear observer (CSLO) have recently been used to assess CT image quality for detection tasks and combined detection/estimation tasks, respectively. Although the use of channels substantially reduces the amount of data required to compute image quality, the number of scans required for CT imaging is still not practical for routine use. It is our desire to further reduce the number of scans required to make CHO or CSLO an image quality tool for routine and frequent system validations and evaluations. This work explores different data-reduction schemes and designs an approach that requires only a few CT scans. Three different kinds of approaches are included in this study: a conventional CHO/CSLO technique with a large sample size, a conventional CHO/CSLO technique with fewer samples, and an approach that we will show requires fewer samples to mimic conventional performance with a large sample size. The mean value and standard deviation of areas under ROC/EROC curve were estimated using the well-validated shuffle approach. The results indicate that an 80% data reduction can be achieved without loss of accuracy. This substantial data reduction is a step toward a practical tool for routine-task-based QA/QC CT system assessment. (C) 2016 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

A Study and Critique of the Mean Position Concept in Relativistic Wave Mechanics

Gebhart, Hugh David 01 1900 (has links)
The basic concept to be used in studying the question of one-particle interpretations of relativistic wave equations is that of observables and operator representations that are different from the more usual classically motivated observables and representations. In particular, the concept of a mean-position observable will be used to determine to what extent the one-particle "problems" can be resolved.

Oddlužení - jeden ze sanačních způsobů úpadku / Discharge of a debtor - one of modes of insolvency solution

Horňák, Henrich January 2013 (has links)
As of 1 January 2008 Act No. 182/2006 on Bankruptcy and its Settlement (Insolvency Act) has become effective. This statute has completely reformed bankruptcy law in the Czech Republic including but not limited to by implementation of new legal institute of discharge of a debtor. Discharge of a debtor is designed to be a mode of solution of consumer's bankruptcy for non-business individuals and non-business legal entities. Being modeled by foreign legal forms this institute has acknowledged a relief from debts and hence new start for economic life of the subject. New form of solution of consumer's bankruptcy has proven its need of existence also by the fact that discharge of a debtor is by far the most frequent mode of bankruptcy solution in the Czech Republic. The aim of this thesis is to deal with entire issue of discharge of a debtor from filling bankruptcy petition through the very process of discharge to debts relief of a debtor. The thesis text itself is divided into six chapters. First chapter introduces the matter by traditional historical digression of the bankruptcy form in Czech territory, by clarification of the bankruptcy term itself and by provision of basic information on new Insolvency Act. The following chapter endeavors to express particular issues which are common to all modes of...

Beyond avian influenza : policy considerations for the implementation of a 'one health' approach in developing countries

Okello, Anna Louise January 2013 (has links)
The global One Health movement has become firmly entrenched in both political and scientific discourse pertaining to emerging infectious diseases in the past decade. Since the discovery of the H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Hong Kong in 1997, the promotion of more holistic programmes for the control of emerging infectious disease has garnered “unprecedented support” in terms of donor funding and political mobilisation (Scoones 2010). Advocates of One Health argue that intersectoral approaches promoting better communication between the veterinary, medical and environmental disciplines at all levels of governance make not only sound economic sense, they are fundamental to the “new approach” required to address the growing disease threats of the 21st century. However, despite international endorsement of the One Health rhetoric, there is growing pressure to now “turn the rhetoric into reality” (Okello et al 2011). Using a multiple, embedded case study methodology, this thesis seeks to examine questions surrounding the practical implementation of One Health interventions, particularly in developing countries which experience limited resources and competing health priorities. Through examining the livestock and public health policy processes at both local and national levels in Uganda and Nigeria, I attempt to identify whether policy spaces exist for the formal inclusion of One Health approaches in future policy decisions. Furthermore, by scrutinising the current internationally dominant One Health narratives in light of global health governance perspectives and the emerging One Health Global Network, I question whether One Health can be better “packaged” to include endemic diseases and a more focussed sustainable livelihoods approach; arguably inciting greater motivation for developing countries to truly participate. Data from my three empirical chapters are presented in the context of three overriding “One Health propositions” for consideration; by questioning “whose world, whose health”, I aim to delve further into the issues of not whether, but how this “new health paradigm” can be operationalised, and how to address the potential gaps which may ultimately prevent One Health from becoming a truly global phenomenon.

The Effect of Management and Policy Change on the Diversity of Output Broadcast by BBC Radio One and BBC 1xtra between 2000-2004

Moult, Lisa 26 October 2006 (has links)
Student Number: 0416806D MA Art and Culture Management 2004 Faculty of Humanities / British broadcasting has undergone significant change in recent years, as the nation prepares to switch from analogue to digital broadcasting. This process has already begun, with the full switch over to the digital platform scheduled in Britain for 2012. Appropriately, at the forefront of the development of digital broadcasting in Britain is its public broadcaster: The BBC. In line with both government, and organisational objectives, the BBC has developed a range of new television, and radio channels aimed at providing a service that will continue to be appropriate to audiences further into the twenty-first century. This research examines the output of two BBC music radio stations, Radio One and 1xtra, considering how changes to management, policy, and strategy in each station can affect the output they broadcast. Radio One and 1xtra both use a strategy of broadcasting new music to target a youth audience. However, Radio One is a mixed-genre station broadcasting on analogue radio, while 1xtra is a niche station broadcasting on the digital platform. By comparing the stations I attempt to draw conclusions about the BBC’s digital strategy, and what implications these have for the output of both Radio One and 1xtra in the digital age. Discussion in the first half of the research focuses on the internal operations of the BBC. I consider the BBC’s approach to the diversity of the content it broadcasts, and what this approach reveals about the different priorities of the organisation. Close examination of the management changes made at both an organisational, and individual station level provide further insight into the context guiding priorities and policy decisions made in the BBC, Radio One, and 1xtra. The second half of the research pays greater attention to the actual output broadcast by Radio One and 1xtra, using content analysis methodology to measure similarities, and differences between the two stations. Through the simultaneous examination of management and policy changes, and of the output broadcast by the two stations, I aim to make conclusions about how changes made internally have had a direct impact on the diversity of music broadcast on Radio One and 1xtra.

Conception d'un système de transmission ultra-large bande par impulsions orthogonales / Design of the ultra-wideband transceiver based on pulse orthogonal

Tabaa, Mohamed 21 November 2014 (has links)
In this thesis, we propose a design methodology for communication architectures dedicated to wireless sensor network based on impulse radio techniques for UWB communications. The impulse technique proposed in this work relies on pulse shape modulation. The architecture design approach proposed in this thesis focuses on pulses shape and their generation, which is of major interest as it constitutes the carrier of the information exchanged. The study on the choice of pulse shape led us to propose two different architectures. The first one is based on orthogonal polynomials, more especially on the Hermite polynomials, for impulse generation, and on a correlation architecture for detection and recognition of transmitted impulses. The second architecture is based on discrete wavelet packet transform and can be used according two different modes, mono and multi-users. The use of both synthesis and analysis architectures for emitter and receiver, respectively, offers a new way for digital communications and allows the wavelet transform to ensure the impulses generation on the transmitter and their recognition on the receiver. A major interest point of the proposed technique is to facilitate the multi-users access to the ultra-wideband channel and to allow simultaneous communications (many-to-one, from the sensors to the sink) or broadcast (one-to-many, from the coordinator to the nodes) but without overloading the MAC layer. Hence, the proposed architecture is part of the interface between both PHY and MAC layers, and allows to release their specific design constraints
