Exploring organisational learning within a continuous business improvement context [electronic resource].Baldwin, Coraleen Ann. January 2010 (has links)
The organisation under review, like many others, is currently facing a number of challenges, such as profitability and the life-span of the existing resources, and the ability to locate new resources. This calls for leaders to think and respond differently in such times, which has called for a revision of the current business strategy and operating model. This has included, amongst others, the disposal of marginal/loss making resources, the revision of the traditional organisational hierarchical structure, referred to as the inverted triangle (with a more direct focus on front-line employees) and the implementation of continuous business improvement, supported by lean manufacturing principles. This study aims at exploring the supporting socio-technical change considerations within a learning organisation, specifically focussing on aspects referring to the desired culture, such as communication patterns; social and behavioural patterns and leadership characteristics. In order to effect successful, holistic change, it is imperative that both the social and technological dimensions of organisational change are jointly managed and optimised. The purpose of this study will therefore be to explore and suggest the socio-technical considerations required to facilitate holistic change in order to achieve efficiency within the organisation. / Thesis (M.Comm.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2010.

The role of working memory capacity and fluid intelligence in the organization of memoryHarrison, Tyler Leland 12 January 2015 (has links)
One of the best ways to increase memory performance on a task is to organize the to-be-remembered material (Postman, 1972). Throughout a number of experiments, the amount a subject organizes a list of words has been shown to be related to their overall recall performance (e.g., Mandler & Pearlstone, 1966). However, few studies have investigated whether other cognitive abilities are related to the organization of memory and whether these other abilities contribute to the relationship between organization and memory performance. In the present study subjects completed four sets of multitrial free recall and the consistency in which subjects recalled words (a measure of organization) was compared to performance on multiple measures of working memory capacity and fluid intelligence. I show that working memory capacity is related to the organization of memory particularly when subjects were told to use an organizational strategy and that fluid intelligence is related to organization regardless of strategy. Additionally, both working memory capacity and organization predict unique variance in immediate free recall performance.

Structural equation modelling of the relationship between performance determinants and performance /Lee, Nagarajah. Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop a performance management framework for public schools. / This study examined the relationship between the various dimensions of performance determinants, and the overall performance level of performance determinants of the schools. First, the schools current level in the four dimensions of performance determinants; financial management, learning and growth, internal process, and customer orientation as perceived by the school administrators and teachers, was assessed. Then, structural models were constructed to examine how the performance determinants affect the overall performance of the schools. Since the data was gathered from two distinct populations, school administrators and teachers, separate models were used to explore the relationships. In addition, this study also explores how the performance appraisal moderates the relationship between performance determinants and the overall performance of the schools. The instrument for this study was developed using focus group interviews. The SSM intervention was used during the focus group interview. The instrument was subjected to various types of validity and reliability check to ensure that it has sound psychometric properties. The sample consisted of 521 school administrators, consisting of school principals, senior assistants, and heads of units) and 931 teachers. / The multistage random sampling technique was employed, first the systematic sampling technique was used to select the schools from a complete list of secondary schools in Sarawak, and then the simple random sampling method was employed to select the respondents. Two sets of questionnaires were used in this study: the school administrator questionnaire and teacher questionnaire, each consisting of four sections. Section one elicits background information, section two assesses the performance determinant level of the schools, section three determines the overall performance of the schools, and section four evaluates the performance appraisal practices of the schools. The performance determinants of the schools are assessed from four dimensions; financial management, learning and growth, internal process, and customer orientation. The overall performance of the schools is assessed from three perspectives: effectiveness of services, efficiency of the staff, and academic performance and student quality. / Thesis (DBA(DBusinessAdministration))--University of South Australia, 2005.
