The Phantom of the Opera : prehistory, birth and afterlifeBell, Joseph James January 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide a critical account of Gaston Leroux’s Le Fantôme de l’Opéra (1910), which has become one of the most enduring and visible of modern myths. Leroux’s text discloses anxieties about a rapidly changing world, and these anxieties manifest themselves artistically in a simultaneous fascination and horror with the emerging episteme. Leroux’s story subsequently took on a life of its own in popular culture, yet, this thesis argues, many of these adaptations remain bound up in the same issues of futurity and dichotomies of masculinity, as well as concerns about the role of the artist in determining the values of his society.

The American Film Musical Genre Today: A New Breed or Just More of the Same? : The Development of the American Film Musical 2000-2013 / Den amerikanska filmmusikal-genren idag: Något nytt eller bara mer av samma sak? : Utvecklingen av den amerikanska filmmusikalen 2000-2013Askerfjord, Christer January 2014 (has links)
Since the introduction of synchronized sound at the end of the 1920s the film musical has had a special place in American film. But even with that special place the interest in the film musical has varied a lot during the 20th century. From the high interest during the “Golden Age” in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, through low interest in the following decades and then renewed interest in musicals with the animated film musicals from Disney in the 1990s. But what has happened after the millennium? Has there been any development in the American film musical genre or is it just more of the same? This thesis tries to answer the question by analyzing three successful film musicals from the period 2001-2013, Moulin Rouge! (Baz Luhrmann, 2001), The Phantom of the Opera (Joel Schumacher, 2004), and Les Misérables (Tom Hooper, 2012) and comparing them to classical traditional musicals. According to this thesis there is a split answer, some areas of the classical American film musical have developed while other areas still remains the same.

Makabrózní, mysteriózní, monstrózní. Architektura a prostředí v gotickém hororu / Macabre, mysterious, monstrous. Architecture and setting in gothic horrorKolich, Tomáš January 2015 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is architecture and settings of gothic horrors, particularly in films. The work explores the relationship between the genre of gothic horror and gothic architecture, mainly within examples of haunted castles. The aim of the work is to study in what way the haunted castles are depicted in films and how the gothic architecture is applied in their appearance. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first one is an analysis of some of the gothic horror tendencies which have an influence on the image of haunted castles. These can be observed in films as well as in literature and theatre since the beginnings of gothic horror in the second half of the 18th century until today. The second part uses these tendencies to analyse images of haunted castles in films Dracula (John Badham, 1979), Bram Stoker's Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992) and Van Helsing (Stephen Sommers, 2004).

The object of this study is the main character in the novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The purpose of this literature analysis is to highlight the ambiguity and complexity surrounding this character based on a psychological and moral point of view. The analysis is based on the theories of Vincent Jouve about the perception of a fictional character. The result of the analysis shows that the ambiguity of the main character can be deduced from what Jouve calls the "system of sympathy" consisting of three codes : the narrative code, the affective code and the cultural code.
