Situé dans le contexte général de la sécurité routière, et plus particulièrement axé sur la sécurité des véhicules légers (VL) en virages, ce travail de thèse a pour objet de proposer une méthodologie fiabiliste de prédiction de trajectoires à risque, basée sur le traitement statistique et la modélisation probabiliste de trajectoires réelles de VL en virages. La première partie du travail concerne la construction de modèles probabilistes simples et robustes représentatifs des trajectoires réelles observées. Ces modèles sont des transformées de processus aléatoires scalaires normalisés du second ordre, faiblement stationnaires, ergodiques et non gaussiens, et permettent de décrire de façon réaliste la variabilité aléatoire observée du triptyque Véhicule-Infrastructure-Conducteur. Ils permettent aussi, par construction, de s'affranchir d'éventuelles difficultés dans l'alimentation des paramètres dominants qui les gouvernent. La seconde partie est consacrée au développement et à la mise en oeuvre d'une stratégie fiabiliste destinée à associer un niveau de risque à chaque trajectoire en entrée de virage. Basée sur l'emploi conjoint de méthodes probabilistes pour la modélisation des incertitudes, fiabilistes pour l'évaluation des niveaux de risque et statistiques pour la classification et le traitement des trajectoires, cette approche est une réponse réaliste au problème posé. De par sa conception et ses possibilités, la méthodologie fiabiliste proposée est une contribution significative au développement de procédures d'alerte destinées à réduire notablement le nombre d'accidents en virages. / This PhD thesis tackles the general context of road safety, focussing on the safety of light vehicles (LV) in bends. A reliability engineering methodology is proposed to predict dangerous trajectories, based on the statistical processing and probabilistic modelling of actual trajectories in a bend. In the first part of this work, simple and robust probabilistic models are built to describe trajectories measured in an instrumented bend. The models are transforms of scalar normalized second order stochastic processes which are slightly stationary, ergodic and non-Gaussian. They offer a realistic description for the observed random variability of the Vehicle-Infrastructure-Driver system. They also inherently circumvent possible difficulties in the identification of the dominant parameters which control the system. The second part of this work is devoted to the development and implementation of a reliability engineering strategy intended to associate a risk level to each trajectory at a bend entry. Based on the joint use of probabilistic methods for modelling uncertainties, reliability engineering for assessing risk levels and statistics for classifying and processing the trajectories, this approach provides a realistic answer to the tackled problem. From its design and its possibilities, the proposed reliability engineering methodology constitutes a significant contribution to the development of warning procedures the deployment of which are expected to notably reduce the number of accidents in bends.

A Study of Road Deicer Pathways in a Small Headwater Catchment in Southeastern Massachusetts

Thesis advisor: Rudolph Hon / Road salt deicers are necessary for road safety, yet pose a risk to wildlife and public water supplies by increasing major ion loads above EPA limits. To better understand the fate of deicers after application, we need to know the migration routes and subsurface pathways that deicers take from their sources to points of discharge. This project used sediment core analysis and major ion chemistry analysis of water quality to evaluate the pathways of NaCl and CaCl2 through the subsurface of a shallow glacial aquifer in south east New England. Assessment of sediment cores revealed a heterogeneous subsurface with great variation in hydraulic conductivity. Analysis of major ion concentrations and ion ratios showed both short, direct pathways and deeper, longer pathways indicative of yearly salt retention in the aquifer. Ion chemistry also revealed deicer sources by their variable NaCl to CaCl2 ratios. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College. Road Maps - Navigating the Road Movie

This Master of Arts project in Creative Writing was submitted to the School of Creative Media at Royal Melbourne University of Technology. It contains a full length feature screenplay for an un-produced road movie entitled Free Radicals. It is primarily a dark love story between the drug-addicted rent boy Roman and the budding actor, the protagonist Jonathan. It is however written in a conventional structure familiar to Hollywood professionals, and a good deal of humour is used to attract interest in the story. The storyline itself is more familiar to the audience of road movies and independent features in the US or European Art House ventures. The exegesis explores the history and the conventions of the road movie genre, in addition to the established and not often debated conventions of screenwriting theory. The thesis attempts to show how these theories were applied to the screenplay and how they influenced the process of writing it within an academic and commercial context. The MA project shows how different expectations may create a conflict in the personal writing process and inspire a product that makes compromises. The reason for reading this project may not only be the product itself but also the insight it offers into a screenwriting profession where it is often important to meet expectations.

This is a bachelor thesis in the course Industrial Automation, PPU301, commissioned by Volvo Construction Equipment in Eskilstuna. This thesis treats how we can increase the effectiveness of production in roadside construction through automation. The report presents different concepts of automation and in the end of the report you can read about the concept I recommend and why. The work has been divided into different stages. In the first stage I have collected information by reading articles and by site visits. The black top process has been identified though a storyboard. The focus is on which machine that would benefit the most from automation. After identifying the process and the customer’s needs, I get a clear view of what the machines should be able to do. After studying both the paver and compactor, I decided to focus on the compactor. There are significant potential for further development of the compactors in regards of automation. I will present a concept of a totally autonomous compactor. The compactor must, among other things, be able to position and identify objects, like machines, workers and other road users. The compactor needs to get a clear signal when the road piece is finished with compaction. The packing operation is automatic controlled depending on the type of mix of asphalt, thickness and speed. There are different solutions to make the compactor autonomous. In the report, I have detailed the different concepts and the sensors needed to realize an autonomous machine.
