New protectorates, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and Kosovo, have experienced a medium to long term international presence, which has sought to ensure security and implement liberal democracy. Given that social movement activity has been linked to democratic development, the presence and development of social movements in new protectorates presents a novel and interesting context in which to study social movements. Using a political opportunity framework as a guide, this research examines the extent to which international actors in new protectorate contexts influence the strategy of social movements. A case analysis of two entities, Vetëvendosje, a social movement and social movement organisation (SMO) in Kosovo, and Afghanistan 1400, a civil society organisation (CSO) in Afghanistan, is supported by documentary sources and a range of interviews with members, and employees of international actors and CSOs. To date, there has been little research on the wider effects of this type of international presence and the consequences for social movement activity have been largely overlooked. This study analyses the influence of international actors on two levels. The first is seen via the impact of international actors on political opportunities. The second is seen via the strategic decisions made in response to the international presence, by the case studies. Although the international presence generally increases political opportunities, the level of opportunities in Afghanistan and Kosovo is still low. Both case studies have taken the decision to participate in electoral politics alongside their existing activities in an attempt to exert a greater level of influence. The study concludes that international actors play a key role in shaping social movement strategy within new protectorates, but that this influence often occurs in unexpected and indirect ways.

This thesis demonstrates the powerful relationship between ethnicity, culture, nation and state in the Basque Country and the Former Yugoslavia. In placing Basque and Yugoslav sub-state nationalism in comparative relief this study argues that political state or autonomy seeking behavior on the basis of an ethnically defined or imagined community continues to have powerful contemporary salience. Furthermore when situated within the literature on nationalism, these two cases suggest that the theoretical literature needs to be reworked beyond the positions of Anthony Smith and Ernest Gellner. The endurance of cultural claims to a political state suggests that the connection between ethnicity and the nation is stronger then many contemporary observers have suggested. It is argued that the cultural, political and territorial rights of sub-state nations are likely to remain highly divisive sites of historical, cultural and political contestation. As a force, nationalism is by no means relegated to the past by cosmopolitanism or a ‘post-national’ shift as a number of high profile commentators in the contemporary social sciences have argued. Throughout history, military officers have relied on maps to provide spatial information and make informed battlefield and other problem-solving decisions. Today’s officers can put even more spatial information at a soldier’s fingertips if they are made aware of the power of geographic information systems and software. This paper makes the argument that an informal education and introduction to the uses of geographic information systems (GIS) during their participation in reserve officer training corps (ROTC) can help provide future officers with a basic understanding on how GIS can impact their ability to solve military relevant problems with these technologies and can aid in their decision making. This project created a web application using python and based on military mapping manuals and defense tools that allow a user to create a model of how quickly the user could be able to move over a given terrain. This web application was given to military officers in ROTC training at the University of Arizona prior to participation in a land navigation exercise to help them plan and prepare their path through the event. Students using the app prior to the exercise were able to see how the information provided by GIS can help them make decisions and times were compared between those that used the tool and those that did not. This tool, and the subsequent exercise provided increased awareness in military applications of GIS for those future military officers and helps inspire them to pursue more information on the technology.
