This research investigates the encounter of aesthetics and the everyday in pictures of Instagram’s visual network. It questions what is something instagrammable, departing from Flusser’s concept of a mosaic-world, which establishes that humanity nowadays lives and knows through pictures that eventually compose a great and moving mosaic. Methodologically, it used 900 images collected from the publicly shared pictures of Instagram’s hashtag #postitfortheaesthetic. Thinking of certain parameters established by Manovich, it catalogued and divided these pictures into categories and subcategories, and then composed a series of mosaics to help determining recurrent aesthetic features. It also promotes a discussion about the intertwinement of everyday life and aesthetics, in a debate which is constantly permeated by thoughts on photography. It discusses vernacular photography theories as well as the work of scholars that address the sensibilities created by the little details in everyday life, such as Stewart, Rancière, Highmore and Saito. It also reflects on the connections between habits, the ordinary, and objects of consumerism and of art, in the contexts of everyday life aestheticization, through the art theories of Danto, Duchamp and Warhol, and other twentieth century authors and artists such as Baudrillard, Lipovetsky, Featherstone and Schmid. With all of that, it became possible to think about the creation of technical images in the visual culture of Instagram and to determine some aesthetic and fundamental aspects of the pictures shared in this visual network.

INTRACOMMUNITY USAGE OF "NIGGA" IN SPOKEN AFRICAN AMERICAN LANGUAGE: A CORPUS STUDY

Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how nigga is used between speakers of African American Language (AAL). Nigga has few detailed analyses that examine its intracommunity usage, especially regarding non-negative uses of the word. It is the center of much controversy within African American communities, particularly due to the generational divide on its racist potency, and horrific historical ties. Therefore, I ask whether in-group speakers use nigga in different contexts to convey meanings that are also neutral or positive in sentiment, and whether factors such as gender and age affect these sentiments. This thesis is a partial replication of Smith (2019), and I utilize spoken data from the Corpus of Regional African American Language in my quantitative analysis. I find that AAL speakers use nigga across all sentiments, and in a variety of syntactic environments. Additionally, men seem to say nigga more often than women in spoken conversation, and younger individuals are more likely to use the term over older individuals. Through this thesis, I shed light on the invisible linguistic boundaries that complicate AAL speakers' feelings on nigga. Cultural experiences and social pressures of being African American inform many speakers' opinions regarding nigga, and care should be taken to discuss these complexities. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (MA)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Housing La Habana Vieja: Reframing the Formal and Informal Vernacular

Baralt, Jessica Isabella 16 June 2017 (has links)
The design of housing in an urban fabric designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site requires consideration of the historic character and how each building contributes to the streetscape. Beyond the facade, one discovers the unique story of each parcel through the transformations that its residents have enacted over many centuries in order to accommodate greater density and the evolution of family structures. One might even find a record of building periods following a hurricane, for example, inscribed by hand on a column in the shared patio for the collective memory of current and future tenants. These transformations are almost all realized through self-effort construction and are a community-building exercise. Unfortunately, the paradox that accompanies the informal typologies to construct additional housing is destructive more often than not. The additions to and division of the highly articulated residential architecture in Havana have a pervasive impact on the building structure and exacerbates the decay of the built environment. The formal typologies established to define thresholds and transition between public and private spaces are as much a part of the social landscape as the informal insertions. Housing la Habana Vieja calls for a reconciliation of the architectural heritage with contemporary building attitudes in its design for multi-family housing in the historic city center of Cuba. This project addresses the housing crisis in Havana and proposes a resolution that is suited to the "economy of means, both material and aesthetic,"to appropriate the design philosophy of Cuban-American architect Belmont Freeman. The context investigates the underpinnings of housing attitudes by identifying milestones and gaining perspective from dialogue with the residents of la Habana Vieja. Documenting the formal and informal typologies allowed for a comparison of both their spatial implications and their performance, or function. The design proposal explores the intersection of these typologies to manifest the social behaviors and cultural values in the definition of shared and private space. The formal typologies engage the transitional qualities of space by layering building elements as thresholds to private realms. The informal typologies are engaged in the construction of habitable space by activating the immediate built environment through the addition and multiplication of planes. To design at the corner of the past and present is to preserve the vernacular and brandish the opportunities that the future holds for Housing la Habana Vieja. / Master of Architecture

Constructing the Contemporary Nostalgic Image

Baker, Sarah Lindsey, Baker, Sarah Lindsey January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the intrinsic relationship between nostalgia and vernacular photography, with specific attention to the networked vernacular photograph. Through an examination of early Kodak advertising and current in-phone digital editing and smartphone photography-sharing apps, this paper demonstrates the role of constructed aesthetic nostalgia in contemporary vernacular photography. This research argues that contemporary vernacular photography is a product of contemporary nostalgia, as evidenced through photographs born digital and shared publicly via social media sites such as Instagram and Snapchat, among others.

Understanding a Historic Downtown as a “New” Vernacular Form: Immigrant Influence in Woodburn, Oregon

Larson, Julia 18 August 2015 (has links)
What does historic preservation mean in a historic downtown with a long-standing immigrant population? With 90% of the business owners in the historic downtown identifying as Latino, Woodburn, Oregon presents the convergence of historic preservation advocates and Latino business owners. Some stakeholders view historic preservation as maintenance to preserve what exists, while some view preservation as restoring a building to its build date aesthetics. This thesis addresses what the field of preservation and the stakeholders in Woodburn value and how that causes conflicts when dealing with preservation efforts. The main method employed for study in this thesis was collection of qualitative data through interviewing historic preservation advocates, city officials, and Latino business representatives. By understanding Woodburn as an example of a “new” vernacular form, the analysis explores how the community of Woodburn can negotiate its regional dynamics to create a local distinctiveness, which includes a many-layered historical narrative.

The Malay house : rationale and change

Wan Abidin, Wan Burhanuddin B January 1981 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1981. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Bibliography: leaves 110-113. / The Malay house is defined and described in the Malaysian context . Underlying principles or rules that make up the· house are derived from the analysis of its physical, spatial and functional elements and the variations that these elements exhibit. Tho rules are tested in the reconstruction of the Malay house. Changes based on hypothetical cases are then introduced to find out how the house would transform under these new sets of requirements. It is found that it is possible for a person, having not seen a Malay house prior to this, to reconstruct one based on the rules stated in this work. It is also found that new systems have to be added to the existing systems in the Malay house to meet the requirements for change. The addition of new systems however, do not mean the destruction of the tradition. It is hoped that this prototype would be the basis for further research in the Malay house. / by Wan Burhanuddin B.
