Theme and Variations for guitar Op. 77 : an analysis and background of Lennox Berkeley’s brilliant composition for the guitar

Theodoridis, Ioannis January 2014 (has links)
This essay on Lennox Berkeley’s Theme and Variations for Guitar serves as the written half of my final dissertation for my bachelor’s degree in classical music, following my studies for Peter Berlind Carlson at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm between the years 2011- 2014. The other half of this project consists of a studio recording and a concert performance of this piece that I have analysed. Originally, this paper was written in Swedish but also translated to English to serve as an academic writing sample for the Royal College of Music in London, necessary for approving my continued postgraduate studies there starting in September 2014. Other reasons for translating this paper to English is partly the piece’s English origin but also the lack of other available information on this beautiful composition for the guitar. Hopefully, this paper may be of help to guitarists and Berkeley enthusiasts in exploring this remarkable piece of music and Lennox Berkeley’s relationship to the guitar. / <p>Bilaga: 1 CD</p>

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This work issues on the musical work Variazioni Attraverso I secoli, op 71 of Mário Castelnuovo-Tedesco, his first composition for guitar, attending a request from the spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. The proposition is to analyse the historical context of the guitar in the beginning of the XX century, an epoch of great importance in a wide range of human knowledge. The guitar was in an affirmation process in the scenery of the European music, where Castelnuovo-Tedesco is placed. This work demonstrates the use of the form of Theme and Variations in Variazioni Attraverso i Secoli, op71, which is a necessary effort for the comprehension of the compositional process of Castelnuovo-Tedesco. / Mestre

Finding the "Indian" in Amy Beach's Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet, op. 80.

Burgess, Stephanie J. 12 1900 (has links)
Music that is categorized as part of the Indianist movement in American music (ca. 1890-1925) typically evokes Native American culture, ritual, story, or song through compositional gestures. It may also incorporate Native American tunes. Amy Beach (1867-1944) is considered to have composed five Indianist works, but her Theme and Variations for Flute and String Quartet, op. 80 has not been included as one of them. This thesis rethinks categorization of the piece, seeking the "Indian" in it through examination of its gestures, instrumentation, and relationship to contemporary Indianist compositions.

Folias de Espanha: o eterno retorno / Folias de Espanha: o eterno retorno

Apro, Flavio 23 November 2009 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the trajectory of the theme Spanish Folias, which is one of the most remarkable phenomena in musicology due to its permanent recurrence in music history. Our goal was to broaden the scope of interdisciplinary study and musicological reflection through the understanding of the use of the theme in music history and its historiography, in order to enrich the horizon of our academic practice. The Spanish Folias is a simple melody with enigmatic character that first appeared in Portugal in the early sixteenth century as a wild popular street dance that had its rhythmic and harmonic structure modified by passing through Spain. From the Iberian Peninsula, it traveled to Italy and was taken by Italian guitarists to the French court, becoming into a majestic dance. Its history starting from this itinerary is complex and reflects its great popularity, since it still constitutes a great source of inspiration for several composers, since renowned names such as Bach, Beethoven and Liszt, until soundtracks composed for commercial movies. Other musical themes display the same historical recurrence, as for example, the XIII century catholic hymn Dies Irae or Paganinis Caprice N.24, but the resuming of Spanish Folias as musical subject is the most recurrent in the History of Music.

A Comparison of the Variation Technique Employed by Beethoven and Copland

Higginbotham, Mary Kay 05 1900 (has links)
Aaron Copland was born of Russian-Jewish parents on November 14, 1900. Harris Kaplan, his father, had acquired the American equivalent of his name when an immigration official at the British port of entry wrote it on his papers, and from then on the family name was "Copland." Sarah Mittenthal and Harris Copland met at a family social gathering in New York and were married in 1885. They lived in the upper stories of his department store in Brooklyn which remained the family home until 1924 and was where Aaron, the youngest of five, was born.
