This research aims to survey the Aaron Beck’s thesis about personality and analyse the state of the theory of personality in his approach. The theoretical framework of Cognitive Therapy is somewhat neglected and still has many gaps, especially in personality theory. To analyze the current state of this problem in the Cognitive Therapy, we first described some criteria of scientific theory and personality theory, and briefly present a discussion about the concept of personality and its theories. Later we described Beck's thesis from the models he showed throughout his work, the first of them, his model of depression, which was originally developed by Beck to explain and treat depressed patients. The second, the psychopathology model , in which the author proposes an expansion of the original theory to other psychiatric disorders with little change in the basic theoretical framework, and the third is the modal model, his recent theoretical proposal in which he presented and incorporated new concepts and hypotheses to the original theory. This model appears as an attempt to solve some problems in TC raised by Beck himself and by his critics. Finally, we evaluate the thesis found. We conclude that although Beck's thesis about personality are relevant and consistent, don't constitute a complete theory of personality, because of important gaps. The main of them refer to a lack of a theory of motivation and an explicit theory of nonpathological personality.

Computer Aided Text Analysis in Personnel Selection

Garrad, Mark, n/a January 2004 (has links)
This program of research was aimed at investigating a novel application of computer aided text analysis (CATA). To date, CATA has been used in a wide variety of disciplines, including Psychology, but never in the area of personnel selection. Traditional personnel selection techniques have met with limited success in the prediction of costly training failures for some occupational groups such as pilot and air traffic controller. Accordingly, the overall purpose of this thesis was to assess the validity of linguistic style to select personnel. Several studies were used to examine the structure of language in a personnel selection setting; the relationship between linguistic style and the individual differences dimensions of ability, personality and vocational interests; the validity of linguistic style as a personnel selection tool and the differences in linguistic style across occupational groups. The participants for the studies contained in this thesis consisted of a group of 810 Royal Australian Air Force Pilot, Air Traffic Control and Air Defence Officer trainees. The results partially supported two of the eight hypotheses; the other six hypotheses were supported. The structure of the linguistic style measure was found to be different in this study compared with the structure found in previous research. Linguistic style was found to be unrelated to ability or vocational interests, although some overlap was found between linguistic style and the measure of personality. In terms of personnel selection validity, linguistic style was found to relate to the outcome of training for the occupations of Pilot, Air Traffic Control and Air Defence Officer. Linguistic style also demonstrated incremental validity beyond traditional ability and selection interview measures. The findings are discussed in light of the Five Factor Theory of Personality, and motivational theory and a modified spreading activation network model of semantic memory and knowledge. A general conclusion is drawn that the analysis of linguistic style is a promising new tool in the area of personnel selection.

The relationship between temperament and serum serotonin concentration in migraine without aura

Harvey, Jaqueline Ceridwyn 05 1900 (has links)
Cloninger’s Psychobiological Theory of Personality proposes four temperament dimensions, each underpinned by a different neurotransmitter system. The serotonergic system is purportedly linked to Harm Avoidance (HA). The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between HA and serotonin in migraine without aura (MO). A second aim was to explore the personality profile of MO patients. Sixty-six participants completed an online questionnaire and donated blood samples. Results indicated no significant association between HA and serotonin and a significant relationship between MO and HA. This study indicates that both Cloninger’s Psychobiological Theory of Personality and the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire used for its assessment have value in South African personality research. In addition, the findings of the study reveal support for personality influences on the processes involved in migraine. This not only produces worthwhile avenues of research but also an alternative perspective for clinical practice. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology (Research Consultation))
