Knowledge production and research development in science and technology at higher education institutions in the Eastern Cape ProvinceDye, A. H. (Arthur H.) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aims of this study were to establish whether there had been discernable changes
in the nature of knowledge production at higher education institutions in the Eastern Cape
since the transition to democracy, and to relate these to international and national trends in
the way knowledge is produced. In view of the emphasis in government policy on the
development of science and technology, the study was focused on researchers in this area and
on the administration of research in this context. The research was conducted through
structured interviews with administrators and active researchers at the three technikons and
five universities in the province.
The study found that there had indeed been changes, both in the way research is
managed, and in the nature of the research itself. Research has become more applied over the
last five years and there has been a move towards multidisciplinary, multi-institutional
research, although administrators tended to underestimate the extent of this change. Research
management has also become businesslike with the establishment of dedicated
Deans/Directors of research on most campuses. Administrators ascribe these changes to new
government policies and to changes in the requirements of funding agencies. Researchers,
however, generally ascribe the changes to factors more directly related to themselves, such as
changes in institutional research policy, more opportunities for multidisciplinary work and to
greater linkage with the private sector. The study also found that many of the changes were
already underway some time ago and that there was a degree of proactiveness in the way some
institutions had realigned their research. The study found that there are significant differences between formerly advantaged
institutions and their historically disadvantaged counterparts. The latter are dominated by less
well qualified staff and produce fewer research outputs than the former. Research cultures are
less well developed and researchers complain of a lack of institutional support for research.
Despite this, research continues to be a significant activity on these campuses. In general, staff
at technikons are more positive about the future of research than their colleagues at
universities, irrespective of historical advantage.
The study found that knowledge production has assumed some of the characteristics
of so-called Mode 2 knowledge production as a result of a variety of national and international
influences, and historically advantaged institutions have been able to initiate adjustments to
the way in which research is done in anticipation of new policies. Publication of government
policy on science and technology and on higher education may have accelerated the change
but did not initiate it. The historically disadvantaged institutions, however, appeared to have
done little in anticipation of new policy and have been forced to be reactive to recent
government initiatives. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die studie was om ondersoek na die voorkoms van waarneembare
veranderinge in die karakter van die lewering van kennis by hoer-onderrig institute in die Oos-
Kaap, na die oorgang van demokrasie, in te stel. Verder is gepoog om hierdie veranderinge in
verband met internasionale en nasionale tendense, met betrekking to die wyse waarop kennis
voortgebring word, te bring. In die lig van die regering se beleid aangaande die ontwikkeling
van wetenskap en tegnologie was die studie op navorsers in hierdie rigting, sowel as die
aanpassing van navorsing in hierdie konteks, gefokus. Die ondersoek was deur middel van
gestruktureerde onderhoude met administrateurs en aktiewe navorsers aan die drie tegnikons
and vyf universiteite in hierdie provinsie uitgevoer.
Die ondersoek het aangedui dat veranderinge in die wyse waarop navorsing bestuur
word en in die karakter van navorsing op sigself, inderdaad plaasgevind het. Navorsing het
gedeurende die afgelope vyf jaar toenemend toepaslik geword en hoewel administrateurs
geneig het om die omvang daarvan te onderskat, was daar 'n merkbare verplasing na multidissiplinere
en multi-institution ale navorsing. Die administrasie van navorsing het ook, na die
aanstelling van teogewyde Dekane/Direkteurs van navorsing by die meerderheid kampusse,
toenemend bedryfsgerig word. Administrateurs skryf hierdie verplasing toe aan die nuwe
staatsbeleid sowel as die veranderinge in die voorskrifte van befondsingsliggame. Op hul beurt

gekwalifiseerd is en dat 'n laer navorsingsopbrengs geproduseer word. Die navorsingskultuur
is minder ontwikkel en navorsers is ontevrede oor die gebrek aan institutionele ondersteuning
wat navorsing aanbetref. Ten spyte hiervan is navorsing voortdeurend 'n betekenisvolle
akwitiwiteit op hierdie kampusse. Personeel verbonde aan tegnikons is oor die algemeen meer
positief oor die toekoms van navorsing in teenstelling met hul kollegas verbonde aan
universitiete, ongeag die historiese agtergrond.
Die studie het ook bevind dat, weens die verskeidenheid nasionale en internasionale
invloede en die oorspronklike aanpassings wat historiese bevoorregte institute tot stand laat
kom het met betrekking tot die wyse waarop navorsing, met die oog op nuwe beleid, uitgevore
word, die produksie van kennis van die eienskappe van "Mode 2" aangeneen word. Die
bekendmaking van die staatsbeleid aangaande wetenskap en tegnologie en hoer-onderrig kon
uit eie beweging hierdie veranderinge bespoedig het, maar het dit nie geinisieer nie. Histories
onbevoorregte institute het tot dusver min werk gemaak van die vooruitsigte van die nuwe

Student persistence in higher education : a study of the challenges and achievements of a group of historically disadvantaged senior students studying at the University of the Western CapeSampson, Leonie Georgina 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Students from impoverished economic backgrounds have the highest drop‐out rates
within the higher education sector. Research conducted both locally and
internationally reveals that there are several variables that influence a student’s
decision to leave the higher education institution. Very little research has
concentrated on why students from deprived backgrounds advance academically or
what enables them to do so.
In South Africa, numerous changes have been introduced on the social, economic
and educational fronts in attempts to correct the inequality prevalent in the country.
In education, various changes and programmes have been introduced. Increasing
access to higher education for poor black students has been one of the primary goals
of change within that sector. The results, though, are alarming. Despite this
increased access, many continue to drop out; the reasons are varied.
Some, however, do stay. This research was aimed at finding out what contributed to
a group of poor black students’ advancing academically when many of their peers
had dropped out. There is no theory of what these factors could have been.
Although the researcher realises that the results of this study will not be
generalisable, it is an important discussion to initiate if we as South Africans truly
want to support disadvantaged students entering higher education institutions.
Without attempts to find adequate support structures, many will continue to be let
down by the system. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Studente uit ʼn verarmde ekonomiese agtergrond het die hoogste uitvalkoers in die
hoëronderwyssektor. Navorsing wat plaaslik sowel as internasionaal uitgevoer is,
toon dat daar verskeie veranderlikes is wat ’n student se besluit beïnvloed om die
hoëronderwysinstelling te verlaat. Bitter min navorsing is al gedoen om vas te stel
wat dit is wat studente uit ʼn verarmde ekonomiese agtergrond in staat stel om
akademies vol te hou en te vorder.
Daar is verskeie veranderings op die sosiale, ekonomiese en onderwysfront in Suid‐
Afrika ingevoer om die ongelykheid wat in die land heers, te probeer regstel. Wat
onderrig betref, is verskeie veranderings en programme ingevoer. Een van die
vernaamste doelwitte van verandering in hierdie sektor was verhoogde toegang tot
hoër onderwys vir arm swart studente. Nogtans is die resultate kommerwekkend.
Hoewel hulle toegang verkry, val talle van hierdie studente steeds uit – om verskeie
redes.
Nietemin is daar studente wat volhou. Hierdie navorsing is daarop gemik om uit te
vind wat daartoe bygedra het dat ’n groep arm swart studente akademies vorder
terwyl baie van hulle eweknieë uitgeval het. Geen teorie bestaan oor wat hierdie
faktore kon gewees het nie. Hoewel die navorser besef dat die resultate nie
veralgemeen kan word nie, is dit belangrik dat hierdie gesprek aan die gang kom as
ons as Suid‐Afrikaners werklik steun wil bied aan benadeelde studente wat
instellings van hoër onderrig betree: As ons nie toereikende ondersteuningstrukture
probeer vind nie, sal talle steeds deur die stelsel in die steek gelaat word.

Evaluating the outcome of voluntary counselling and testing for HIV at the workplace : a Namibian case studyWeimers-Maasdorp, Delia Angelique 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In Namibia the HIV prevalence rate in adults (15 to 45 years of age) is estimated at 18.1%. The first
HIV infection in Namibia was reported in 1986 and the epidemic constitutes the biggest
developmental challenge for Namibia. Approximately 39 new infections occur every day and
approximately 28% of deaths in the country are AIDS-related.
The majority of Namibia’s workforce is in the age group of 15 years to 45 years and it can be
anticipated that HIV and AIDS will have a major disruptive effect on the country’s workforce as well
as its economy over the next two decades. According to the Namibian government, voluntary
counselling and testing (VCT) for HIV is one of the most effective methods to prevent the spread of
the epidemic. With this in mind, this study aims to evaluate the outcome of voluntary counselling
and testing at one workplace in Windhoek, Namibia, to see whether VCT provides education as well
as whether VCT is a vehicle to promote awareness, good attitudes, intentions and behaviour
change. The main purpose of this outcome evaluation is to determine to what extent voluntary
counselling and testing at the workplace has led to HIV-related changes in knowledge, attitudes,
behaviour and practises.
Although the majority of respondents indicated that their knowledge of HIV had increased after their
participation in the VCT programme, upon closer analysis it was evident that participants who had a
secondary or higher level of education had more knowledge, or had had more of a knowledge
increase, than participants with a primary or lower level of education. From the research findings, it
appeared that the voluntary counselling and testing had helped participants to identify their
individual risks, as their self-reported risk perceptions with regard to becoming infected with HIV
and/or a sexually transmitted disease increased after their participation in the VCT. There was also
evidence that participants implemented risk reduction plans after the voluntary counselling and
testing, as the percentage of participants who had casual sex partners decreased while the
percentage of participants who had not had casual sex partners in the previous six months
increased.
It can be concluded that the general attitude amongst employees towards HIV-positive people is
relatively non-discriminatory. However, it seems that the VCT was not as successful in transferring
information and education on HIV amongst employees with lower education levels than amongst
their peers with higher levels of education, and employees with primary or lower education levels
appear not to have benefited much from the intervention in terms of an increase in knowledge.
It is recommended that voluntary counselling and testing be provided to the employees at the
company on a regular basis, not only because employees have requested it, but also to monitor
whether the voluntary counselling and testing for HIV at the company has had the desired effects on
the employees, especially with regard to effecting an increase in knowledge, a reduction of stigma
and discriminatory attitudes, and the desired behaviour change amongst participants. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In Namibië word die MIV voorkomssyfer onder volwassenes (ouderdom 15 tot 45 jaar) op 18,1%
geskat. Die eerste MIV-geval in Namibië is in 1986 aangemeld en vertoonwoordig die land se
grootste ontwikkelingsuitdaging met ongeveer 39 nuwe infeksies daagliks en ongeveer 28% van
sterftes in die land wat VIGS-verwant is.
Die meerderheid van Namibië se werksmag val in die ouderdomsgroep 15 tot 45 jaar en daar kan
verwag word dat MIV en VIGS oor die volgende twee dekades grootskaalse ontwrigting op die land
se werksmag sowel as sy ekonomie gaan veroorsaak. Volgens die Namibiese regering is vrywillige
berading en toetsing (VBT) een van die mees doeltreffende metodes om die verspreiding van die
epidemie te verhoed. Gedagtig hieraan het hierdie navorsingsprojek dit ten doel om die uitkomste
van vrywillige berading en toetsing by een werksplek in Windhoek, Namibië, te evalueer ten einde te
bepaal of VBT opvoedkundig is en of dit bewuswording, gesonde houdings, voornemens en
gedragsverandering bevorder. Die hoofdoelwit van hierdie uitkomsevaluering is om die mate
waartoe vrywillige berading en toetsing tot verandering in kennis, houding, gedrag en praktyke gelei
het, te bepaal.
Alhoewel die meerderheid respondente aangedui het dat hulle kennis na VBT verbeter het, het dit
by nadere ondersoek geblyk dat deelnemers wat sekondêre of hoëronderwys gehad het, oor meer
kennis beskik het of hul kennis meer uitgebrei het as respondente wat slegs 'n primêre of laer vlak
van onderwys gehad het. Uit die navorsingsbevindings blyk dit dat daar onder deelnemers aan
vrywillige berading en toetsing 'n toename in die self-aangemelde risiko-persepsie van besmetting
met HIV en/of geslagsoordraagbare siektes na hul deelname aan VBT was. Daar was ook bewyse dat
deelnemers na die vrywillige berading en toetsing risikoverminderingsplanne geïmplementeer het,
omdat daar 'n afname was in die persentasie deelnemers wat informele seksmaats gehad het, sowel
as 'n toename in deelnemers wat geen informele seksmaats in die vorige ses maande gehad het nie.
Daar kan tot die slotsom gekom word dat werknemers se houding teenoor MIV-positiewe mense oor
die algemeen betreklik nie-diskriminerend is. Dit blyk egter asof VBT ten opsigte van die oordrag
van inligting en opvoeding oor MIV aan werknemers met laer vlakke van onderwys nie so geslaagd
was nie omdat werknemers met primêre of 'n laer vlak van opleiding nie veel by die ingrypaksie
gebaat het in terme van ‘n toename in kennis nie.
Daar word aanbeveel dat vrywillige berading en toetsing op 'n gereelde grondslag aan werknemers
by die maatskappy aangebied moet word, nie bloot omdat werknemers daarvoor gevra het nie,
maar ook om te bepaal of vrywillige berading en toetsing vir MIV by die maatskappy die gewenste
uitwerking op die werknemers gehad het, veral met betrekking tot die uitbou van kennis, 'n afname
in stigmatisering en diskriminerende houdings, en 'n toename in die gewenste gedragsverandering

The appreciation and understanding of value diversity' : an evaluation of a value diversity intervention at the University of StellenboschDittmar, Vera 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa has made a remarkable transformation from an openly racist to a tolerant and
democratic nation. The transformation process removed the legal barriers between subgroups
that formerly postulated separate development for the various racial groups and restricted the
contact between individuals to a major extent. In present day society, one can observe the
transformation process in that South African citizens from different backgrounds have to
develop new patterns of communication and interaction. This process was mirrored in the
student culture of Stellenbosch.
The first objective of this study was to research how individual students experienced their social
and academic environment. Since student relations do not always conform to the University
norm of mutual respect for human diversity, the University felt the need to facilitate an
intervention for valuing human diversity. The second objective of this study was to evaluate the
process of the intervention, focusing on the programme context, the programme activities and
the program theory. In addition, the impressions of workshop participants were studied.
In order to conceptualise the research objectives, the theoretical principles of valuing diversity
were discussed in the form of a purposive literature review on the social psychology and
sociology of stereotyping and related processes, which were examined as barriers to valuing
diversity.
The Value Diversity Intervention was implemented in August 2001. The intervention aimed to
heighten students' awareness of the diversity of the student body and to improve the interaction
among the various student subgroups. The intervention was designed as a workshop and
included 50 students from various backgrounds who were living in the University residences.
Two evaluation types were utilised in this study, i.e. the evaluation of perceived needs and the
evaluation of the intervention process. The research questions were clarified and the specific
methods for gathering and analysing the data were specified. In addition, the aspect of validity
and the quality of the obtained data were reviewed.
The evaluation of perceived needs showed that individual students perceived the student
population to be divided into minority ('coloured', 'black') and majority ('white') groups. Even
though group membership did not affect specific instances of intergroup relations (e.g. individual friendships), it had implications for the social atmosphere on campus, which was
characterised by a lack of intergroup contact and a domination by the majority group.
Accordingly, minority group members interpreted the social atmosphere more negatively than
majority group members. Hence, minority group members perceived a need to improve
intergroup interaction.
This analysis indicates that a value diversity intervention may be beneficial. This corresponded
to the view of the Department of Student Affairs, which arranged the Value Diversity
Intervention.
The evaluation of the intervention highlighted both negative and positive aspects. Firstly, the
intervention design did not include the promotion of the intervention itself, which might have
been essential making students interested in the diversity topic and in motivating students to
participate. Secondly, the intervention did not address the specific diversity challenges as
experienced by students of the University of Stellenbosch. Students expressed concerns
regarding the applicability of the provided information in their daily life. Thirdly, the workshop
focused mainly on stereotypes. Yet, the possible effects of stereotypes were not sufficiently
discussed. In addition, a large number of stereotypes were listed, but these were often biased
due to the lack of participants from diverse groups. Further, no workshop technique which
questioned the presented lists of biased stereotypes was applied or generated. Besides these
technical considerations, it should be noted that stereotypes in general perpetuate the division
between subgroups. Thus, the workshop focused to a large extent on past and present aspects,
which divide the student population, instead of focusing on uniting issues.
The described negative aspects might have been balanced by one of the four observed
workshops. This specific workshop was characterised by a small amount of participants and a
positive presentation of one of the main facilitators. This resulted in a productive discussion,
where the participants used the possibility to reflect on the current situation out of their
perspective and reflected upon the contributions of the facilitator. Students might have been
motivated to take positive impulses of this workshop in their daily life.
Based upon this research, recommendations can be determined. Firstly, the promotion of the
intervention should emphasize the desirability of diversity values and highlight the personal
potential benefits to participants. Secondly, it might be useful to acknowledge differences
between students, but to place a greater emphasis on similarities, i.e. on aspects that connect students. Thirdly, the curriculum of the intervention should be modified to cater especially for
student needs. Fourthly, the selected workshop components should achieve an equal balance
between lecture parts and interactive elements. Participants should have the possibility to take
an active part in the intervention if they are interested in doing so. The final recommendation
entails that future interventions should be based on a comprehensive, sustained strategy with
long-term goals. These strategies should be integrated in the already existing infrastructure of an
institution.
This intervention has to be understood as a contribution to the transformation process that South
Africa is currently undergoing. Based on the recent discussion at the University of Stellenbosch
about the adoption of a comprehensive diversity strategy, it is hoped that this singular
intervention will be linked to further contributions in this transformation process. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Suid Afrika het 'n merkwaardige transformasie vanaf 'n openlik rassistiese tot 'n tolerante en
demokratiese nasie ondergaan. Voorheen het die wetlike skeiding tussen subgroepe aparte
ontwikkeling en, vir verskeie rassegroepe, minimale kontak met individue in verskillende
rassegroepe beteken. Die transformasieproses in Suid-Afrika het hierdie omstandighede
verander en in die huidige Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing is die proses waardeur mense van
verskillende agtergronde nuwe patrone van kommunikasie en interaksie moet ontwikkel,
merkbaar.
Die transformasieproses kan ook in die studentekultuur van Stellenbosch gesien word. Die
eerste doel van die tesis was om ondersoek in te stel na hoe individuele studente hulle sosiale en
akademiese omgewing ervaar. Aangesien studenteverhoudinge nie altyd tot die Universiteit se
norm van wedersydse respek vir menslike diversiteit konformeer nie, het die Universiteit gevoel
dat daar 'n behoefte is om 'n intervensie te fasiliteer om waardering vir menslike diversiteit
skep. Die tweede doel van die tesis was om die proses van die intervensie te evalueer deur te
fokus op die konteks van die program, die programaktiwiteite en die programteorie. Verder is
die indrukke van die deelnemers aan die werkswinkelook bestudeer.
Die teoretiese beginsels onderliggend aan die waardering van diversiteit is bespreek ten einde
die navorsingsdoelwitte te konseptualiseer. Dit is verwesenlik deur 'n "doelgerigte"
literatuurstudie oor die sosiale sielkunde en sosiologie van stereotipering en verwante prosesse
wat gesien word as struikelblokke in die evaluering van diversiteit.
Die intervensie vir die waardering van diversiteit is in Augustus 2001 deur die Universiteit van
Stellenbosch geimplimenteer. Die intervensie het as doel gehad om studente 'n verhoogde
gewaarwording van die diversiteit van die studenteliggaam te bied en ook om interaksie tussen
die verskeie studente-subgroepe te bevorder. Die intervensie is ontwerp as 'n werkswinkel vir
50 studente van verskillende agtergronde wat van Universiteitsbehuising gebruik maak.
Die tesis verduidelik hoe die navorsingsdoelwitte korrespondeer met die evalueringstipes wat
gebruik is, nl. die evaluasie van waargenome behoeftes en die evaluasie van die proses. Die
navorsingsvrae is duidelik gestel en die wetenskaplike metodes vir dataversameling en dataanalise
word gespesifiseer. Verder word die aspek van die geldigheid en kwaliteit van die data
ook bespreek. Die evaluering van waargenome behoeftes het gewys dat individuele studente die
studentepopulasie sien as verdeel In 'n minderheidsgroep ('bruin' en 'swart') en 'n
meerderheidsgroep ('wit'). Alhoewel lidmaatskap tot n betrokke groep rue
intergroepverhoudings affekteer nie (bv. individuele vriendskappe), het dit tog implikasies vir
die sosiale atmosfeer op kampus wat deur 'n tekort aan intergroepkontak en dominasie deur die
meerderheidsgroep gekarakteriseer kan word. Vervolgens interpreteer minderheidsgroepe die
sosiale atmosfeer meer negatief as lede van die meerderheidsgroep. Dit kan dan ook as die rede
aangevoer word waarom lede van minderheidsgroepe 'n waargenome behoefte het om
intergroepinteraksie te bevorder.
Die persepsies van die respondente wat 'n onderhoud toegestaan het, het aangedui dat 'n
intervensie vir die waardering van diversiteit voordelig sal wees en dit het ooreengestem met die
siening van die Departement van Studentesake, wat die intervensie gereël het.
Die evalusie van die intervensie beklemtoon albei die negatiewe en positiewe aspekte. Eerstens,
het die intervensie intervensie-ontwerp, nie die promosie van die intervensie self behels nie, wat
noodsaaklik sou gewees het om student geinteresseerd te maak in die diversiteit van die
onderwerp en om die studente te motiveer om mee te doen. Tweedens, het die intervensie nie
die spesifieke uitdagings soos deur die studente van die Universiteit van Stellnbosch ondervind
is, aangespreek nie. Studente het hulle bekommernis uitgespreek oor die toepassing van die
informasie in hulle daaglikse lewe. Derdens het die werkswinkel hoofsaaklik gefokus op
stereotipes. Nogtans was die effekte van die stereotipes nie deeglik bespreek nie. Boonop was
daar te groot aantal stereotipes gelys, maar dit was bevooroordeeld as gevolg van die gebrek van
deelnemer van diverse groepe. Daar was ook geen werkswinkel tegnieke van toepassing wat die
aangebode lyste van die bevooroordeelde stereotipes bevraagteken het nie. Naas die tegniese
oorwegings, moet daar gelet word dat stereotipes in die algemeen die verdeling tussen
subgroepe in stand hou van stereotipes in die algemeen. Dus het die werkswinkel tot 'n groot
mate gefokus op huidige en vorige aspekte wat die studente verdeel het in plaas daarvan om te
fokus op sake van ooreenstemming.
Gegrond op hierdie navorsing, kan aanbevelings gemaak word. Eerstens moet daar klem gelê
word op die bevordering van die verskeie behoeftes en waardes van die intervensie en die
potensiaal waarby deelnemers kan baat. Tweedens, kan dit waardevol wees om verskille tussen
studente te erken maar groter klem te lê op eendersheid, d.i. aspekte wat die studente tot mekaar
verbind. Derdens moet die leerplan van die intervensie gewysig word om in die behoeftes van die student te voorsien. Vierdens, moet daar 'n balans gehandhaaf word tussen die lesings en
interaktiewe elemente. Daar moet 'n moontlikheid bestaan vir deelnemers om 'n aktiewe rol in
die intervensie te speel indien hulle dit verlang. Ten slotte word aanbeveel dat toekomstige
intervensie gebaseer word op begrypende en volgehoue strategie met lang termyn doelwitte. Die
bogenoemde strategie moet in die alreeds bestaande infrastruktuur verweef word.
Hierdie intervensie kan beskou word as 'n bydrae tot die transformasie proses wat Suid-Afrika
huidiglik ondergaan. Gebaseer op die onlangse gesprek by die Universiteit van Stellenbosch oor
die aanneming van'n omvattende diversiteitstrategie, word daar gehoop dat die enkelvoudige
intervensie kan inskakel by verdere bydraes in die transformasie proses.

Biological citizenship in Blikkiesdorp : the case of the disability grantKelly, Gabrielle Gita 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis examines local understandings and use of the Disability Grant in The Symphony Way Temporary Relocation Area, locally referred to as Blikkiesdorp (tin can town). The study takes an ethnographic approach and focuses particularly on a group of people accessing or seeking to access Disability Grants who formed a support group as a result of the study. Findings reveal that in a context of social and economic marginalisation, there is a high reliance on government grants for survival and a particularly high demand for Disability Grants by the unemployed in Blikkiesdorp. As social assistance in South Africa is categorically targeted at particular vulnerable groups, the majority of the unemployed of working age are not eligible for social assistance. As a result, Disability Grant recipients face significant pressure from their households and the community at large to share their grants with those who cannot find unemployment but are not catered to by the social security system. It also means that disability or illness is often valued over health. Given the use of the Disability Grant as a livelihood strategy within households and the related importance of Disability Grants to individuals and families, those who receive their grants on a temporary basis engage in a struggle to reapply for grants through performances of disability and humanitarian appeals to medical doctors who, as a result, are not only burdened by high numbers of grant applications, but also pressured to make decisions that go beyond their role as medical professionals. The analysis draws on the concept of biological citizenship to explore the relationship created between illness or disability of the bodies of marginalised citizens and the potential to access to social citizenship rights, enabled through the receipt of the Disability Grant. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis ondersoek aan die hand van ʼn etnografiese benadering plaaslike begrippe en gebruike van die Ongeskiktheidstoelaag in Die Simfonieweg Tydelike Hervestigingsgebied, plaaslik bekend as Blikkiesdorp. Die studie fokus op ʼn groep mense wat die Ongeskiktheidstoelaag ontvang of probeer om daartoe toegang te verkry en wat as gevolg van hul deelname aan die studie, ʼn ondersteuningsgroep gevorm het. Die bevindinge dui daarop dat in ʼn konteks van maatskaplike en ekonomiese marginalisering, daar vir oorlewing tot ʼn groot mate op staatstoelaes staatgemaak word en dat daar spesifiek onder werkloses in Blikkiesdorp ʼn groot aanvraag vir die Ongeskiktheidstoelaag is. Maatskaplike ondersteuning in Suid-Afrika word op spesifieke kategorieë kwesbare groepe gerig en die meerderheid werkloses kwalifiseer nie vir maatskaplike ondersteuning nie. Treatment through empowerment? : exploring the dynamics of ‘responsibility’ in antiretroviral therapy (ART) in two clinics in the Cape WinelandsMyburgh, Hanlie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates how the new technology of treatment, i.e. antiretroviral therapy (ART), is
incorporated into public health care institutions. The success of this technology ideally relies on the notion
of the ‘responsibilised’ patient as one who, simply put, consistently maintains the level of ARV-adherence
necessary to suppress the viral load and to avoid drug resistance. The stringent management and continual
monitoring of treatment adherence necessary to achieve these outcomes lie beyond the direct control of
the health care institution. Given that the institution sees its patients irregularly, a patient’s divergence
from treatment guidelines is established only after the fact. The institution takes on a supporting role while
it is the patient who, on a day-to-day, dose-by-dose basis manages and monitors themselves, making ART
a seemingly individual endeavour and responsibility. This shift in responsibility is compatible with the
‘new contract’ between provider and client, necessitated by ART. Even so, the institution attempts to
manipulate the day-to-day behaviours of the patient to conform to those required in order to achieve
treatment outcomes. This thesis examines how these different aspects of ART play out within two clinics
in the Cape Winelands, and more specifically, the institutional intricacies of managing a disease which
requires treatment that is not directly observed. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die studie ondersoek hoe die nuwe tegnologie van behandeling, antiretrovirale behandeling (ARB), in
publieke gesondheidsorgklinieke geïntegreer word. Die sukses van hierdie tegnologie hang af van die
nosie van die ‘verantwoordelike’ pasiënt wat, eenvoudig gestel, die nodige vlak ARV-gebruik handhaaf
om die virale lading te onderdruk en weerstand te voorkom. Die streng kontrole oor die toewyding tot
behandeling wat nodig is om hierdie uitkomstes te bereik, lê buite die direkte beheer van die
gesondheidsorgkliniek. Aangesien die kliniek sy pasiënte slegs periodiek sien, word ʼn pasiënt se afwyking
van behandelingsriglyne eers later gemeet. In hierdie opsig neem die kliniek 'n ondersteunende rol in,
terwyl dit die pasiënte is wat op 'n daaglikse, dosis-tot-dosis basis hulself moet handhaaf en monitor. Dit

Who will I be now? : the lived experience of adolescent sibling bereavement within the school contextSchroeder, Lesley Ann 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the needs of sibling-bereaved adolescents in high schools in the Western Cape, South
Africa. A grounded theory approach was used to examine unexpected sibling bereavement with specific
focus on participant perceptions and experiences regarding support provided by their high school.
Interviews and focus groups were conducted with siblings who were in high school when their brother or
sister died suddenly. An argument is developed for why high schools need insight into effective ways of
supporting sibling-bereaved adolescents as they attempt to fit in and function at school.
As this study was conducted in a multi-language environment, attention is given to the differing abilities of
adolescents to articulate their bereavement experience. The effectiveness of focus groups with this
population and the importance of providing psycho-education support during the interviewing process are
emphasised. The scarcity of studies on adolescent bereavement in South Africa can be attributed to a
combination of the emotional painfulness of the subject for adolescents and gatekeeping by school
personnel and parents. Understandably, concerns about disclosure and fresh trauma/grief triggering may
be given precedence over research.
Themes grounded in the data uncovered a psychosocial journey involving disruption, transition and
changed self. Bereaved siblings felt singled out as different from their peers when they return to school.
Hence discreet acknowledgement and disclosure of the death is important to them. A key finding is that
accomplishment plays a significant role in boosting the flagging morale of bereaved adolescents.
Accomplishment aids their inviduation and stimulates them to regain interest in their own life goals. While
individual teachers and other school personnel were considered helpful, there was an absence of a
structured plan of support for bereaved adolescents in the schools examined. Attachment theory
foregrounded an explanation of why the loss of a sibling during adolescence can have a lasting influence
on the future of those left behind. Most adolescents in the study evidenced a desire for an on-going
connection with their sibling who died while they simultaneously took on new roles to try and fill the void
created by their death. Findings from this study are intended to provide richer insight into the complexity of
adolescent sibling bereavement and may also serve to inform educational and health care interventions for
bereaved learners in South Africa. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie verken die behoeftes van adolessente in hoërskole in die Wes-Kaap, Suid-Afrika, ná die
verlies van ’n broer of suster. ’n Gegronde-teorie-benadering is gebruik om ondersoek in te stel na
adolessente wat onverwags ’n broer of suster verloor het, met bepaalde klem op deelnemers se opvattings
oor, en ervarings van, die steun wat hulle van hul onderskeie hoërskole ontvang het. Onderhoude en
fokusgroepe is dus gehou met adolessente wat op hoërskool was toe hul broer of suster skielik gesterf het.
Die studie beredeneer waarom hoërskole insig moet hê in die doeltreffende ondersteuning van
adolessente wat ’n broer of suster aan die dood moes afstaan, namate hulle weer op skool probeer inpas
en funksioneer.
Aangesien hierdie studie in ’n meertalige omgewing uitgevoer is, word adolessente se wisselende
vermoëns om hul ervaring van verlies te verwoord, in ag geneem. Die doeltreffendheid van fokusgroepe
met hierdie populasie, sowel as die belang van psigo-opvoedkundige steun gedurende die
onderhoudproses, word beklemtoon. Die seldsaamheid van Suid-Afrikaanse studies oor adolessente wat
broers of susters verloor, kan toegeskryf word aan ’n kombinasie van die emosionele pyn wat die

van die self aan die lig. Adolessente wat broers of susters aan die dood moes afstaan, het met hul
terugkeer skool toe uitgesonder en anders as hul portuur gevoel. Dus is oordeelkundige erkenning en
openbaarmaking van die sterfgeval vir hulle belangrik. Een van die belangrikste bevindinge is dat prestasie
’n beduidende rol speel om die verswakte moreel van sodanige adolessente ’n hupstoot te gee. Prestasie
help met hulle individuasie, en stimuleer hulle om opnuut in hul eie lewensdoelwitte belang te stel. Hoewel
individuele onderwysers en ander skoolpersoneel as tegemoetkomend beskou is, was daar geen
gestruktureerde ondersteuningsplan vir die adolessente in die betrokke skole nie. Die gehegtheidsteorie
doen ’n verklaring aan die hand van waarom die verlies van ’n broer of suster gedurende adolessensie ’n
blywende invloed kan hê op die toekoms van die kinders wat agterbly. Die meeste adolessente in die
studie het ’n begeerte getoon na ’n voortgesette band met hul oorlede broer of suster, terwyl hu lle
terselfdertyd nuwe rolle aanvaar het om die leemte van die oorledene te probeer vul. Bevindinge uit hierdie
studie is bedoel om dieper insig te bied in die kompleksiteit van adolessente wat broers of susters verloor,
en kan ook opvoedkundige en gesondheidsorgintervensies vir sodanige leerders in Suid-Afrika rig.

Imagining "whiteness" : an ethnographic exploration into fantasy and experience of young women (and men) seeking bazungu partners in Kampala, UgandaHugo, Nicola Mercia 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In one of Uganda’s main national newspapers, the New Vision, women and men advertise that they
seek ‘white’ partners. Using emergent design, this study set out to explore this yearning for local -
‘white’ relationships. I conducted exploratory and semi-structured interviews with 20 of these women
and men. As I started conducting the interviews, it became clear that this was a topic which provoked
emotionally charged responses and a great deal of ‘identity work’, with participants identifying with,
or disidentifying from, particular groups and categories, notably ‘prostitutes’ and ‘traditional’,
‘cultural’ or ‘modern’ women and men. Engaging critically with post-colonial writings and
contemporary feminist research, I argue that my respondents provided important insights into the
broader dynamics of gender, sexuality, race and power, as well as processes of identity construction in
post-colonial Uganda. I explore the fantasy constructions and stereotypes perpetuating beliefs in
‘white’ superiority and address the various influences upon which respondents draw to bolster
constructions of ‘whites’ as superior. These are marked by explicit beliefs in racial hierarchy, as well
as ‘modernisation’ and ‘developmental’ discourses which positively associate ‘modernisation’ with
‘Westernisation.’ I discuss respondents’ negative constructions of local, ‘black’ men and women born
out of past experiences with local partners. Male respondents expressed frustration with Ugandan
women, whom they constructed as ‘money minded’, whom they believe forfeit dignity, for love of
money, in their search for modernity. ‘Tradition’ and ‘culture’ were often invoked by men against
women, who were seen as failing to live up to presumed cultural standards of femininity. I also
explore female respondents’ appeals to ‘tradition’ and ‘culture’ which they feel benefit Ugandan men
to the detriment of women and romantic relationships. I show that female respondents draw on
discourses of Western ‘modernity’ and human rights, to illustrate the extent of gendered inequalities in
Uganda, and find that Western humanism, embodied in the ‘white’ male, is constructed as a solution
to their relationship dilemmas. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In New Vision, een van Uganda se vernaamste nasionale nuusblaaie, plaas vroue, sowel as mans,
advertensies waarin hulle aandui dat hulle op soek is na ‘wit’ metgeselle. Hierdie etnografiese studie
steek voelers uit en probeer vasstel wat die motivering is om in verhoudings met ‘wit’ metgeselle
betrokke te raak. Semigestruktuele onderhoude was met respondente (wat advertensies geplaas het)
gevoer. Die studie vind dat respondente hul geslags- sowel as rasse-identiteit konstrueer. In sommige
gevalle word dit gedoen deur identiteite te konstrueer waarmee hulle hulself nie wil assosieer nie.
Deur bogenoemde in diepte te ondersoek, kry ons insig in die wyse waarop, in die kontemporêre
Ugandese konteks, identiteitsvorming plaasvind. Ek ondersoek ook respondente se verbeeldingryke
konstruksies en stereotipes wat die opvatting wil vestig dat ‘wit’ gelyk aan ‘superieur’ is. Ek spreek
dan ook die verskeie beïnvloedingsvelde aan wat respondente gebruik en waarop hulle hul ‘wit is
superieur’ opvatting bou. Ek dui aan dat die beïnvloedingsvelde dikwels gekenmerk word deur ‘n
eksplisiete geloof in die bestaan van ‘n bepaalde hiërargie van ras. Diskoerse oor modernisering en
ontwikkeling waarin ‘modernisering’ en ‘vooruitgang’ sterk geassosieer of gelykgestel word met
verwestering is ook aan die orde van die dag. Voorts bespreek ek respondente se negatiewe
konstruksie van plaaslike mans en vroue en die feit dat dit dikwels gebore is uit hul vorige (negatiewe)
blootstelling aan plaaslike metgeselle. Manlike respondente spreek dikwels hul frustrasie uit met
‘geldgierige’ Ugandese vroue wat, volgens hulle, van hul eertydse waardigheid afstand doen in hul
koorsagtige soek na modernisasie. Mans assosieer sterk met eie ‘tradisie’ en ‘kultuur’ en hulle voel
dikwels dat vroue nie voldoen aan die mans se selfopgelegde kulturele standaarde van vroulikheid nie.
Voorts ondersoek ek die pleidooie van vroue waarin hulle aanvoer dat sekere ‘tradisionele’ en
‘kulturele’ gebruike Ugandese mans onbillik bevoordeel. Ek dui aan dat vroulike respondente gebruik
maak van redenasies oor Westerse modernisasie asook menseregte, in hul pogings om die mate van
geslagsongelykheid wat in Uganda bestaan, uit te lig. Laastens vind ek dat Ugandese vroue Westerse
humanisme (wat verpersoonlik word deur ‘wit’ mans) beskou as die oplossing vir hul verhoudingsprobleme.

Good in theory but not in practice : exploring perspectives on inclusive educationDe Winnaar, Mariska 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The introduction of inclusive education in the South African educational system may be seen as
one of the first steps to promote equality and human rights in post-apartheid South Africa. With
the implementation of inclusive education, education became less segregated and fragmented,
with the aim of ensuring equal learning opportunities for all children, including those with
disabilities. The main driving force of inclusive education in South Africa is the Education White
Paper 6 on Special Needs Education: Building an inclusive education and training system
published in 2001.
The aim of this study was to understand inclusive education from the perspectives of those who
are charged with the implementation thereof. Classroom educators (teachers) together with
district-based support teams are seen as the primary resource for achieving the goal of an
inclusive education and training system. This study focused on the perspectives of teachers from
one primary and one secondary school in one education district (Education District A) and
District-based support team members from another education district (Education District B) in
the Western Cape.
The study takes on a social constructionist paradigm and illustrates how our understanding and
conceptualisation of disability have changed overtime. A social constructionist paradigm
highlights the way in which disability is a socially constructed and how it changes according to
our understanding thereof. The different models of disability and the role of education was also a
main focus of this study. A qualitative research design was used, with purposive and opportunity
sampling being applied. Data was gathered using focus groups and in-depth semi-structured
interviews and was analysed using thematic analysis.
The key findings of this study showed that the teachers and district-based support team members
believe that inclusive education can be successful in South Africa provided that changes are
made in how it is currently conceptualised and implemented. The teachers have a very different
perspective on inclusive education from the support team members. The teachers believe that the
success of inclusive education can only be ensured if barriers to teaching are prevented or
eradicated, while the support team members believe the success of inclusive education depends
on the identification and prevention of barriers to learning. Both groups do however believe that inclusive education is a very good ideal to strive towards but that it has not yet been achieved
and that the inclusion and education of all learners are of great importance. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die bekendstelling van inklusiewe onderwys in die Suid-Afrikaanse onderwysstelsel kan gesien
word as een van die eerste stappe om gelykheid en menseregte in post-apartheid Suid-Afrika te
bevorder. Met die implementering van inklusiewe onderwys het die onderwysstelsel meer
toeganklik en minder gefragmenteerd geword. Die doel van inklusiewe onderwys is om te
verseker dat alle kinders, ook dié met gestremdhede, gelyke leergeleenthede kry. Die
belangrikste dryfkrag agter inklusiewe onderwys in Suid-Afrika is die Onderwys Witskrif 6 oor
Spesiale Onderwys: Die bou van 'n inklusiewe onderwys-en opleidingstelsel wat in 2001
gepubliseer is.
Die doel van hierdie studie was om inklusiewe onderwys vanuit die perspektiewe van diegene
wat dit moet implementeer te verstaan. Klaskamer opvoeders (onderwysers) asook
distrikgebaseerde kringondersteuningspanne word gesien as die primêre bronne vir die bereiking
van 'n inklusiewe onderwys-en opleidingstelsel. Hierdie studie het op die perspektiewe van
onderwysers, van een primêre en een sekondêre skool in een onderwysdistrik (Onderwysdistrik
A), en kringondersteuningspanlede, van ʼn tweede onderwysdistrik (Onderwysdistrik B), in die
Wes-Kaap gefokus.
Die studie neem 'n sosiale konstruktivistiese paradigma aan en illustreer hoe ons begrip en
definiëring van gestremdheid oor tyd verander het. 'n Sosiale konstruktivistiese paradigma
beklemtoon die manier waarop gestremdheid sosiaal gekonstrueer is en hoe dit verander volgens
hoe ons begrip daarvan verander. Die verskillende modelle van gestremdheid en die rol van
onderwys was ook 'n hooffokus van hierdie studie. 'n Kwalitatiewe navorsingsontwerp is
gebruik, doelgerigte steekproefneming en geleentheid-steekproefneming was toegepas om die
deelnemers te kies. Data is ingesamel deur middel van fokusgroepe en in-diepte semigestruktureerde
onderhoude en is ontleed deur gebruik te maak van tematiese analise.
Die belangrikste bevindings van hierdie studie was dat die onderwysers en distrikgebaseerde
kringondersteuningspanlede van mening is dat inklusiewe onderwys slegs in Suid-Afrika
suksesvol kan wees mits daar veranderinge gemaak word in hoe ons dit tans konseptualiseer en
implementeer. Die onderwysers se perspektief van inklusiewe onderwys verskil heelwat van die
perspektiewe van die kringondersteuningspanlede. Die onderwysers is van mening dat van inklusiewe onderwys slegs verseker sal wees indien hindernisse wat onderrig verhoed, voorkom
of uitgewis word. Kringondersteuningspanlede is weer van mening die sukses van inklusiewe
onderwys afhang van die identifisering en voorkoming van hindernisse van leer. Beide groepe is
egter van mening dat inklusiewe onderwys 'n baie goeie ideaal is om na te streef, maar dat dit
nog nie bereik is nie, ook dat die insluiting en opvoeding van alle leerders van groot belang is.

Women and the management of household food security in PaternosterSwartz, Eleanor 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study focuses on the gendered social relations that are attached to food, through an exploration of women’s management of food and food security in poor households in Paternoster, a small fishing community on the west coast of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. My study explores how women navigate the everyday provision, management and distribution of food within a context of limited resources, with food understood both in terms of sustenance and as implicated in processes whereby gender norms and larger concerns with ‘respectability’ (ordentlikheid) are established and maintained under difficult economic conditions. One of the important strategies employed to ensure food security within households in Paternoster is the establishment and maintenance by and among women of foodways in and between households. An exploration of foodways between households sheds light on the various social networks that exist in Paternoster and the important role of women within these networks.
Paternoster is a space where the navigation of these issues is informed by the long history of subsistence fishing in the area and the symbolism attached to fish and fishing in the ways in which the local fishing community engages with the challenges of food security. Of particular interest is how women manage individual and/or household food security in Paternoster in the light of existing gender dynamics involved in the production, collection and consumption of food. The sharp division of labour historically has meant that women have traditionally been involved in the pre- and post-harvest sector, rather than in the actual catching of fish. This study is also driven by concerns around the impacts of the changing fishing environment on food security and social relations in this small village. One of the major consequences of these changes is the feeling of impending food insecurity experienced by many households. The increase in mechanization in marine resource use activities, drastic changes in fishing policies and the process of fisheries rights allocations as well as diminishing fish stocks are systematically impacting on the social systems and lived experiences of the people who were, and still are, heavily dependent on the fishing industry in Paternoster for their livelihoods.. Paternoster has seen the development of new sources of employment as a result of the growth of tourism, which has presented women in particular with new work opportunities, including working in guest houses and restaurants. However, this is on the low wage end.
In this context the management of food security within the household and between households through maintaining foodways and established food networks is predominantly the responsibility of women. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie fokus op sosiale verhoudings van gender wat verband hou met voedsel, deur‘n verkenning van vroue se bestuur van voedsel en voedselsekerheid in arm huishoudings in Paternoster, ‘n klein vissersgemeenskap aan die weskus van die Wes-Kaap Provinsie van Suid-Afrika. My studie verken hoe vroue die daaglikse voorsiening, bestuur en verspreiding van voedsel navigeer in ‘n konteks van beperkte hulpbronne, met ‘n begrip van voedsel as lewensmiddele sowel as geïmpliseer in prosesse waarin gender-norme en ‘n gerigtheid op 'ordentlikheid' onder moeilike ekonomiese omstandighede gevestig en onderhou word. Een van die belangrike strategieë wat deur en tussen vroue in huishoudings in Paternoster onderneem word om voedselsekerheid te verseker is die vestiging en onderhouding van voedselnetwerke (foodways) in en tussen huishoudings. ‘n Verkenning van voedselnetwerke tussen huishoudings werp lig op die verskeidenheid sosiale netwerke wat in Paternoster bestaan en die belangrike rol van vroue in hierdie netwerke.
