Ultrashort pulsed laser machining of Ti6Al4VAlloy

Bin Ahmad Sabli, Ahmad Syamaizar January 2017 (has links)
Machining of hard metal alloys such as Ti6Al4V alloys with cutting tools incurs high cost particularly in the replacement of worn out tools. In light of this, lasers offer a non-contact processing method which could potentially reduce costs. Lasers can introduce undesirable processing effects, but with the emergence of high powered ultrashort lasers, these processing defects can be greatly reduced. To date, there have been limited studies conducted within the area of picosecond laser machining process. This research has two primary objectives. Firstly, using lasers as an alternative to mechanical processes. Secondly, using a picosecond laser in machining of Ti6Al4V alloy to maximise material removal rate and minimise defects. In this study, an Nd:YVO4 Edge wave picosecond pulsed laser was used for machining Ti6Al4V alloy in air and at room temperature and pressure to understand laser interaction with the Ti6Al4V alloy. The laser was rated at 300W with up to 20 MHz repetition rate and up to 10 m/s scanning rate. Design of experiments was used to understand the effects of varying laser parameters and establishing the ablation threshold. Once the process parameters were established, the next stage was aimed at improving the material removal rates through various strategies. To understand the material removal process, a state of the art holography method was utilised to visualise the laser material interaction. This research has produced three significant results. It was established that the ablation threshold was 45 mJ/cm2 for picosecond laser machining of Ti6Al4V alloy. For the first time in this field of research, the optimal material removal was achieved when the laser was focused at 15 mm above the sample surface resulting in an improvement from 0.1 to 0.6 mm3/min. The holography visualisation revealed that the material removal rate was significantly reduced as the number of pulses increased due to the presence of plasma. Findings of this research support the future of picosecond laser machining of hard metals for micro as well as macro scale applications. Some of the relevant industries for this area of research include aerospace manufacture, automotive parts manufacturing and even manufacture of personal items such as watches, eye wear and jewellery.

Study on Selective Laser Melting of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for biomedical applications / Etude sur la fusion sélective au laser de l'alliage Ti-6Al-4V pour des applications biomédicales

Yan, Xingchen 04 December 2018 (has links)
Selective laser melting (SLM), as an emerging additive manufacturing technology, enables manufacturing complex parts with advanced design. This technology is particularly suitable for biomedical applications, such as the production of personalized implants. Titanium alloys, and particularly Ti6Al4V, are widely used in medical industries because of their excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In order to develop a specific bone substitution, the present research focuses on mechanical properties, post-treatment, light design and biological properties of SLM Ti6Al4V. The most important advances of this work are listed below. The microstructure of SLM Ti6Al4V samples was found to be dominated by acicular martensitic phase. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) treatment resulted in a significant reduction of internal defects, such as residual pores and internal cracks. Untreated samples showed a poor fatigue resistance and low ductility. Heat treated samples (HT) exhibited a reduced tensile strength. However, the tensile behavior and fatigue resistance were improved in comparison with untreated samples. HIP treatment also reduced the tensile strength but improved ductility and fatigue behavior by eliminating internal defects. In order to improve the fatigue resistance of SLM Ti6Al4V, an advanced Surface Mechanical Attrition (SMAT) treatment technology was applied in the frame of this work. The results indicate that SMAT can introduce a nanostructured layer on the surface of samples. This nanostructure may result in an increase in mechanical strength and provide residual compressive stresses in the surface layer. As a result, SMAT samples demonstrated a significant improvement in fatigue strength in comparison with untreated samples, in both low and high cycling fatigue regimes. In addition, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) was performed to enhance the biological activity by forming an oxidized film with calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) on the surface of SLM Ti6Al4V. The microstructure, morphology and chemical compositions of the MAO film prepared with different voltages were characterized. The results show that a coating with Ca and P was formed on the surface of SLM Ti6Al4V, and that it bonded well to the substrate after MAO treatment. It can be concluded that MAO treatment can improve the biological activity of SLM Ti6Al4V parts.Octahedral scaffold structures with a pore size of 500, 600 and 700 μm and porosity levels of 60% and 70% were designed, and corresponding porous structures were manufactured by SLM. The effects of pore diameter and porosity level on mechanical properties of SLM Ti6Al4V porous scaffolds, were systematically studied. In order to evaluate biological performances, in vitro / vivo tests were conducted to study proliferation, cell differentiation and bone growth on SLM Ti6Al4V porous scaffolds. The study indicates that porous scaffolds with a pore size of 500 μm and a porosity level of 60% is promising for the reproduction of bone defects.

The surface’s modification of the implants is the subject of numerous studies with the intention of developing microstructural changes in titanium and its alloys that can accelerate the osseointegration process. The future of implantology is currently linked to these future discoveries. Titanium and its alloys are widely used in biomedical applications because of their biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate the effect on the surface physicochemical properties of the Ti6Al4V alloy after the piranha solution attack at temperatures of 25 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C at a constant time of 30 min. To characterize the surface were used the techniques of scanning electron microscopy with dispersive energy X-ray spectroscopy, optical profilometry, X-ray diffraction and wettability. In addition, corrosion tests were carried out by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that it is possible to change the texture, surface roughness and corrosion resistance of the alloy with the variation of the etching temperature. The proposed surface treatment did not alter the wettability, which remained hydrophilic, nor the surface chemistry, which remained mainly amorphous TiO2. Roughness and surface area increased exponentially with increasing temperature, which may be related to the increase in reaction kinetics. It was possible to obtain a sponge-like threedimensional texture with formation of nano and micropits, according to the treatment temperature. There was an increase in corrosion resistance with increasing treatment temperature, which may be associated with the increased thickness of the oxide formed. Considering that such properties are indirect results of potential success in the osseointegration of a dental implant, the surface treatment of the Ti6Al4V alloy with the use of piranha solution with the control of the attack temperature is an attractive method and with great potential to be commercially applied by the dental implant production industry.

Caractérisation et optimisation du perçage orbital du Ti6Al4V et d'empilages CFRP/Ti6Al4V / Characterization and optimization of orbital driling Ti6AI4V and stacks CFRP/Ti6AI4V

Rey, Pierre-André 29 June 2016 (has links)
The study presented in this thesis deals with the orbital drilling of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy and CFRP carbon fiber composite. This case study is taken from an industrial problem, from the Airbus company wishing to incorporate parts CFRP to reduce its mass. But the combination of these two materials with antagonistic properties poses many problems for drilling. This is why new alternatives to conventional drilling have been sought. Among these alternatives, orbital drilling with micro-lubrication showed interesting prospects. That is why it was chosen in this industrial application. But this process is still relatively unexplored and there is little feedback and many developments to achieve. Orbital drilling process is very different from the conventional axial bore. The bore is machined with a smaller diameter tool than the hole, which describes a helical path in the material. All work presented focus on the characterization for the optimization of the orbital drilling process. To achieve this, several aspects were discussed. First, a geometric modeling and kinematics of operation has been developed. The inclusion of the exact geometry of the tool and cutting conditions helped to define the geometry of the chip at every moment. This knowledge is important for understanding the achieved material removal mechanism, it allows to estimate the loading of the tool and the conditions in which machining is performed. From this first geometric modeling, modeling of cutting forces was established. For this, a model of mechanistic type of effort was used. Its application was adapted to orbital drilling in order to best represent the operation. The thus modeled efforts were compared to those observed experimentally in order to validate the proposed model. This allowed to consider the use of this model for a better understanding of this material removal process. The influence of model inputs, namely the cutting conditions and tool geometry was studied. Another contribution of this work is the characterization of the orbital drilling of CFRP stacks / Ti6Al4V. Indeed, many tests were developed to characterize the orbital drilling process. Experimental procedures have therefore been put in place. First of all, the instrumented test means had to be characterized so that it better corresponds to the means used by the manufacturer and above all it allows to carry out reliable and repeatable testing. The experimental design implemented subsequently helped to define the influence of cutting parameters on the efforts and realized diameters. In this phase of characterization, the bore in errors have also been studied. Thus, the trends have been observed. The results obtained in this work in the meeting helped to consider the process optimization of routes, through the control of advances, the drilling strategy, but also the geometry of the tool. Tracks have been proposed and are subject to further study. modeling implementation and the identification of phenomena occurring during the operation have also laid the foundation for process monitoring. This can be considered passively, to monitor the smooth running of the operation, but also actively to act in real time to the control of the process, based on identified phenomena, to ensure the desired quality.

Poutord, Antoine 15 December 2014 (has links)
The aeronautic field has stronger and stronger requirements so the use of materials for structures has been unavoidable. That’s why carbon fiber composite is appeared in plane structures, used with elements in titanium alloy, and most part of them in Ti6Al4V. These materials are also dispatched in stacks and are drilled in a “one shot” operation, in the aim of being assembled with rivets or bolts. Through the industrial point of view, many problems are highlighted by this operation, generating several over costs. Technologic and scientific locks linked with this operation will be analyzed in this study. The knowledge of local stresses exerted by the tool on the machined matter is the first point allowing the improvement of the understanding of phenomenon that occurs during cutting. Few processes will be experimented to determine stresses submitted by the tool during drilling with accuracy. In the aim of completing the knowledge of the cutting operation, the analysis of the temperature inside the drill is needed. That’s why different experimental devices of thermal measurement are developed. These devices have allowed instrumented machining of holes in each material separately and in the stack of Ti6Al4V/CFRP in order to understanding phenomenon that occur during this operations.

étude des chargements thermomécaniques induits par le resserrement du trou en perçage du Ti6Al4V sous assistance cryogénique / study of the thermomechanical loads induced by hole shrinkage in Ti6Al4V drilling under cryogenic assistance

Merzouki, Johan 19 June 2018 (has links)
On account of the major economic and ecological stakes to which the aeronautic industry stakeholders had to react during the last decades, the composite mass percentage in aircrafts never stopped to increase and reached more than 50% in 2013 for the Airbus A350. Indeed, the aim always being to build lighter aircrafts, aluminum alloys (which represented more than 75% of the total mass in the 70’) were gradually replaced by other materials which were considered to have more advantageous mechanical properties to weight ratios and especially by CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). Since the CFRP/titanium alloy pair demonstrates a better thermal and electrochemical compatibility compared to the CFRP/aluminum alloy pair, the use of titanium alloys in aircraft increased as well. Therefore, many assembly cases are currently CFRP/Ti6Al4V hybrid stacks for which the goal is to be able to drill them in one shot, just as it was done for metal/metal stacks. Studies were carried out concerning hybrid stacks drilling and highlighted that the elevated temperatures during the Ti6Al4V drilling were mainly responsible for the non-fulfilment of aeronautical specifications. Based on these observations, the idea of using the cryogenic assistance emerged: cooling down the cutting area by using liquid nitrogen instead of classic modes of lubrication and cooling.Indeed, the latent heat that liquid nitrogen absorbs when it vaporizes makes it an excellent candidate to efficiently cool the cutting zone. Moreover, since it evaporates quickly at room temperature, it eliminates the need to clean the parts and to recycle the fluids while being neutral for the planet and the machine operator. This Ph.D thesis revolves around the study of cryogenic assistance effects in Ti6Al4V drilling and focuses especially on its impact on hole shrinkage. Indeed, the shape and dimensions of the drilled hole, as well as the thermomechanical loads induced by the operation depend on this little-known phenomenon. Therefore, this thesis proposes to highlight the key role of hole shrinkage in Ti6Al4V drilling and to give elements of analysis and understanding on the phenomenon, for dry and cryogenic cutting conditions.

Development Of Sol-gel Derived Hydroxyapatite-titania Coatings

Un, Serhat Nusret 01 April 2008 (has links) (PDF)
A processing route for development of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 or HAp)-titania (TiO2) hybrid coatings on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) has been established. HAp powders of different size and morphology were synthesized by aqueous precipitation techniques using different precursor couples and XRD, SEM and FTIR were performed for complete characterization. Hybrid coatings were then prepared via sol-gel by incorporating presynthesized HAp powders into a titanium-alkoxide dip coating solution. Titania network is formed by hydrolysis and condensation of Ti-isopropoxide (Ti[OCH(CH3)2]4) based sols. The effect of titania sol formulation, specifically the effect of organic solvents on the microstructure of the dip coated films calcined at 500 &ordm / C has been investigated. The coatings exhibit higher tendency for cracking when a high vapor pressure solvent, such as ethanol (C2H5OH) is used causing development of higher macroscopic stresses during evaporation of the sol. Titania sol formulations replacing the solvent with n-propanol (CH3(CH2)2OH) and acetly-acetone (C5H8O) combinations enhanced the microstructural integrity of the coating during evaporation and calcination treatments. Sol-gel processing parameters such as multilayer coating application and withdrawal rate can be employed to change the titania thickness in the range of 0.120 - 1.1 microns and to control the microstructure of HAp-titania hybrid coatings. Slower withdraw rates and multi-layer dip coating lead to coatings more vulnerable to cracking. A high calcination temperature in the range of 400 &ordm / C-600 &ordm / C lead to more cracking due to combined effect of densification originated stresses and thermal stresses upon cooling.

Characterization of Micro-Machining of Dental Screws and Abutments

York, Richard January 2017 (has links)
In today’s society, dental implants are a growing solution for dental care. However, most dental components are very expensive when imported, and are purchased at premium costs solely from a few international companies. It is estimated that the current market price of dental implants is as much as one thousand times the material cost. To be cost effective in a growing competitive market, a local company is looking into producing their own components, and requires knowledge of manufacturing and quality assurance or expertise in order to validate the effectiveness of their fabricated components. These fabricated components need to be tested against currently in use market components in order to assure that prototype components are not inferior to the current market supply. The present study focuses on the analysis of the fabrication process of dental implants, specifically the abutments and screws. The objective is to compare material properties of prototype and market components to determine if the prototype components have adequate quality. Furthermore, simulated models are developed for predicting material property changes due to the manufacturing process. The material properties are determined through hardness testing and microstructure analysis. Visual inspection is then used to investigate and characterize the components. The simulations use different machining parameters, such as the feed rate and the cutting speed to determine residual stress patterns. Dental implant abutments and screws were successfully tested and compared. The prototypes show a good hardness and microstructure properties similar to market components, indicating a high level of prototype quality. The simulated models were successfully created and provided an adequate level of customization to be usable in place of future mechanical testing and showed results that complimented experimental findings. The standard cutting speed of 2000 rpm (100%) in the prototypes produced the optimal hardness and surface roughness. Prototypes were found to have an acceptable level of both hardness and surface finish for the investigated 50%, 100% and 150% of the standard 2000 rpm feed rate.

Mesure et estimation de la température lors du perçage de l'alliage Ti6Al4V / Temperature measurement and estimation while drilling Ti6Al4V alloy

Marinescu, Mihai-Emil 13 November 2009 (has links)
The titanium-based alloys are materials widely used in the aviation industry. Among these alloys Ti6Al4V is the most common. But many studies have shown that titanium and its alloys have poor machinability. This is due to their low thermal conductivity, which concentrates heat from the cutting area, their high chemical affinity with the tool material. This thesis is separated into two parts, an experimental and numerical that are intended for measuring and estimating the temperature during drilling. For the evaluation of the 3 temperature measurement techniques are used: one using a thermocouple placed as close a possible to the corner the tool, a second measuring the temperature at the interface between tool/cutting edge using the Seebeck effect: sandwich Ti / insulation / constantan / insulation / Ti is achieved and the measurement is made between the constantan and the tool edges and a final technique with thermocouples mounted in the workpiece, ahead of the drill point, so that the drill stops at a distance of 0.1 mm from them. For all these measures, three different drills were used. To achieve the simulation part, two approaches, analytical and numerical, have been used. The analytical approach allows the approximation of cutting forces during drilling. The finite element approach, using the software "Advantedge", allows the evaluation of cutting forces and temperature in machining. The goal is to find the same behavior as in the case of measures
