MECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF OSSEOINTEGRATED TRANSFEMORAL IMPLANT SYSTEMS

THOMPSON, MELANIE 06 April 2010 (has links)
Osseointegrated transfemoral implants have been introduced as an alternative to conventional, socket-based prostheses for above knee amputees. This method is showing great promise; however, the frequency of device failure is of concern. As a means to understand some of these failures, this study investigates the mechanical behaviour of three osseointegrated transfemoral implant systems; an in-house prototype design and two assemblies comprised of implant-grade parts provided by Integrum AB, Sweden. A series of mechanical tests were administered to evaluate the effects of tightening specifications and connection geometry on the material response, and mechanical behaviour of the assemblies. The tests included torque-elongation measurements, torque to failure tests, and strain analyses during loading. This research was carried out in an attempt to better understand the behaviour of components under loading, in order to optimize the assembly specifications and improve the useful life of the system. The results obtained confirm that the Integrum assemblies exhibit improved performance when tightened to a level beyond the current specified tightening torque of 12 Nm. Increased tightening torque provides an improved connection between components, leading to increased torque retention, decreased peak tensile strain values and a more gradual, primarily compressive distribution of strains throughout the assembly. / Thesis (Master, Mechanical and Materials Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2009-09-29 12:14:18.438

January 2019 (has links)
However, designing bolted joints requires a complex calculus systematic and its assembly requires attention in order to apply the correct torque and consequently the ideal pre-load. The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the pre-load of bolted joints from the tightening torque. Therefore, it was developed a torque wrench with strain gauges to measure the applied torque, and also developed a load cell to collect the pre-load onto the bolted joint. Both signals were instantaneous collected, and from this data, analysis were made over the bolted joints. Three different lubrication conditions for bolt and nut were analyzed: with and without lubrication and dry lubrication (graphite). Two torque application conditions were analyzed: the torque onto the nut and onto the bolt. Therefore, six different groups of bolted joints were analyzed. For each group of bolt, nut and washer, it was applied three torques simulating three assembly and disassembly operations. At the end, considerations were made on the influence of the different lubrication conditions on the applied torque and the generated pre-load onto the bolted joint, and the influence of successive torques on a bolted joint. Torque and friction coefficient tables were generated for all the above mentioned six groups / Mestre

Estudo mecânico da conexão implante/abutment utilizando parafusos convencionais e parafusos experimentais cone morse / Mechanical study of the implant/abutment connection using conventional screws and experimental conical screws

Coppedê, Abílio Ricciardi 15 July 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of two implant/abutment connection designs; external hex and internal tri-channel, using conventional screws and experimental conical screws. The study was divided in two parts; the first evaluated the effect of mechanical loading in the torque loss of the screws. 40 implants were used. The implants and abutments were divided in 4 groups: Group 1: external hex/conventional screw (HE); Group 2: tri-channel/conventional screw (TI); Group 3: external hex/conical screw (HECM); Group 4: tri-channel/conical screw (TICM). The abutments were installed in their respective implants with a tightening torque of 32Ncm, after a 10 minute interval, loosening torque were measured. The abutments were installed again with a 32Ncm torque, and after 10 minutes, they were mechanically loaded, simulating 1 year of normal oral function; after loading, loosening torques of the screws were measured again. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test, with significance level of p≤0,05. Optical microscopy analysis were performed before and after the tests. The second part evaluated the flexural resistance of the implant/abutment assemblies. The same 40 assemblies were used. The tests were performed in an universal testing machine, with a 500kgf load cell, 1mm/min displacement, and 45° angulation. Maximum bending moment (FMF) and rupture force (FR) were determined. Collected information were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test, for p≤0,05. Optical microscopy analysis were performed for study of the components after the flexural resistance tests. The results suggested that there were significant differences (p=0,000) in the residual preload before and after mechanical loading between the two types of screws: conical screws showed significantly higher loosening torques than conventional flat screws. There were significant differences in the FMF obtained by the conventional flat screws and by the conical screws (p=0,000); the implant/abutment assemblies with conical screws presented higher flexural resistance. For the FR results, there was significant influence of the type of connection (p=0,019); the tri-channel connection presented better results. Considering the limitations of this study, it was concluded that the conical screws presented higher loosening torques compared to conventional flat screws; the design of the implant/abutment connection presented no significant influence on the loosening torques of the screws; conical screws showed higher bending moment values; and the tri-channel connection obtained higher rupture force values.

The evaluation of bone strength

Jain, Atul January 2008 (has links)
Bone drilling is a major part of orthopaedic surgery performed during the internal fixation of fractured bones. At present, information related to drilling force, drilling torque, rate of drill bit penetration and drill bit rotational speed is not available to orthopaedic surgeons, clinicians and researchers as bone drilling is performed manually. This research demonstrates that bone drilling force data if recorded in-vivo, during the repair of bone fractures, can provide information about the strength/quality of the bone. Drilling force does not give a direct measure of bone strength; therefore it has been correlated with the shear strength and screw pullout strength to determine the efficacy in estimating the bone strength. Various synthetic bone material densities and animal bones have been tested to demonstrate the use of drilling force data. A novel automated experimental test rig, which enables drilling tests, screw insertion and screw pullout tests to be carried out in a controlled environment, has been developed. Both drilling and screw pullout tests have been carried out in a single setting of the specimen to reduce the experimental errors and increase repeatability of the results. A significantly high value of correlation (r² > 0.99) between drilling force & shear strength and also between drilling force & normalised screw pullout strength in synthetic bone material was found. Furthermore, a high value of correlation (r² = 0.958 for pig bones and r² = 0.901 for lamb bones) between maximum drilling force & normalised screw pullout strength was also found. The result shows that drilling data can be used to predict material strength. Bone screws are extensively used during the internal fixation of fractured bones. The amount of screw been tightened is one of the main factor which affects the bone-screw fixation quality. Over tightening of screw can result into the loss of bone-screw fixation strength, whereas under tightening can result in the screw loosening. Therefore, optimum tightening of the screw is important to achieve the maximum bone-screw fixation strength. At present, optimum tightening of the screw is entirely dependent upon the skill and judgment of the surgeon, which is predominantly based on the feel of the screw tightening torque. Various studies have been reported in the literature to develop an algorithm to set an optimum tightening torque value to be used in surgery. A method which is based on the use of rotation angle of the screw while tightening, rather than using screw insertion/tightening torque, to optimise the bone-screw fixation strength is proposed in this research. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been successfully demonstrated on the synthetic bone material using the designed test rig. The optimum angle for the tested screw was found to be 120° which is equivalent to 33% of the screw pitch.

Realizace edukační úlohy na experimentální stanici pro modelování předepjatých šroubových spojů / Realization of educational problem based on preloaded bolted joint apparatus

Žaba, Tomáš January 2011 (has links)
In the master’s thesis an educational task concerning an experimental apparatus for quantity measurement in preloaded bolted joint is realised. In terms of its preparation an innovation of the apparatus leading to an easier and faster pretension realisation was implemented. The educational task for students and also teaching material were produced. The educational task itself consists in experimental confirmation of the relation between the tightening torque and the caused pretension. An FEM model simulating an apparatus flange deformation by given pretension was designed to verify the experiment. The thesis also contains information about the preloaded bolts, pretension elicitation methods and pretension control methods.
