1. Relevance of the work First medicine used by man was of herbal origin, i.e. prepared from plants, their parts and mixtures. After thousands of years, these preparations have not lost their relevance. Increasingly more and more clinical research is done on verification of efficiency and safety of herbal medicine, whereas methods of modern analysis help to ensure their quality and stability. This allows to objectively determine the potential of herbal medicine use, to foresee their possible side effects and to warn against their interaction with other drugs. It is essential that medicinal plants and their parts should be treated as a whole of biologically active substances. A lot of resources are allocated annually to the development of new herbal preparations and research of new plants, analysis of their chemical composition, pharmacological toxicological action, and interaction of plants with other medicinal drugs. By interacting with regulatory systems of the organism, herbal drugs inhibit or stimulate them and primarily affect subjective symptoms. Herbal medicine must be individually prescribed according to the peculiarities of the patient’s ailment and body. Herbal medicine can evoke reactions of the body, which depend on individual characteristics of the patient and on effect of the herbal drugs. There must be no doubts, though, that this medicine is better tolerated and its side effects are considerably milder that those of synthetic preparations. This can be... [to full text]

A study on the effect of a homoeopathic complex formula consisting of Echinacea purpurea tincture, Echinacea angustifolia tincture, Bapstisia tinctoria tincture and Thuja occidentalis D1 on circulating leukocytes

Davey, Karen Lee 05 February 2014 (has links)
M.Tech. (Homoeopathy) / The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the homoeopathic complex formula consisting of , Echinacea angustifolia tincture, Baptisia tinctoria tincture and Thuja occidentalis D1 on circulating leukocytes. These medicinal plants have immune enhancing properties and an effect on leukocytes. Leukocytes play an important role in the body's defence system. 54 volunteers participated in a randomised double blind placebo controlled trial. An initial full blood count before treatment served as a base-line control for each volunteer. A total of 15ml of the medication placebo was administered over 3 hours. After the last dose, a further three blood samples were drawn at 90 minute intervals. Blood analysis included a differential leukocyte count. The trial was conducted over a single 6 hour period. The homoeopathic medication caused a decrease in circulating leukocytes, specifically lymphocytes. The efficacy of this medicationas an immunostimulant should be confirmed on a larger study sample.

Gastroduodeninės srities gleivinės oksidacinių procesų ir augalų tinktūrų poveikio eksperimentinis ir klinikinis įvertinimas / Experimental and clinical evaluation of oxidative processes and effectiveness of herbal tinctures in the gastroduodenal mucosa

Vasiliauskas, Audrius 16 June 2010 (has links)
Skrandžio ir dvylikapirštės žarnos gleivinės įvairių patologinių procesų atsiradimui (tarp jų ir opaligei) svarbią reikšmę turi organizmo pro/antioksidacinės sistemos būklė, antioksidacinės sistemos pajėgumas, lipidų peroksidacijos procesai. Šių procesų dinamikos pažinimas atskleidžia patologinio proceso grandis, suteikia galimybę panaudoti antioksidantinius preparatus šių ligų gydymui. Pastaruoju metu mokslininkų dėmesys krypsta į natūralių antioksidantų panaudojimo galimybes klinikinėje praktikoje. Darbe nustatyti gastroduodeninės gleivinės oksidacinės sistemos pakyčiai, sergant skrandžio ir dvylikapirštės žarnos opalige, ir įvertintas paprastojo kaštono (Aesculus hippocastanum (L.) bei pelkinės vingiorykštės (Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim) žiedų tinktūrų poveikis gleivinės oksidacinei sistemai in vivo, sukėlus žiurkėms eksperimentinę opaligę, ir in vitro, panaudojant tyrimams eksperimentinių gyvūnų ir ligonių gleivinės biopsinę medžiagą. Remiantis eksperimentinės ir klinikinės medžiagos in vivo ir in vitro tyrimų rezultatais, parodytas šių augalų tinktūrų teigiamas, antioksidantinis poveikis, teigiamai veikiantis pažeistos gleivinės oksidacinės sistemos grandis. Gauti duomenys pagrindžia minėtų augalų tinktūrų vartojimo galimybes ligoniams, sergantiesiems gastroduodeninės srities ligomis. / Status of pro/antioxidant system, its antioxidant capacity, and processes of lipid peroxidation play an important role in various pathological processes of gastric and duodenal mucosa (including the ulcers). The knowledge about the dynamic of these processes reveals the chains of the pathological process and gives the possibility to use the antioxidant agents for the treatment of diseases. Now, the researchers tend their attention on the use of the natural antioxidants in the clinical practice. In the study, the changes of oxidative system in the gastroduodenal mucosa of patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers are estimated and the effects of tinctures from the blossoms of horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum (L.)) and the flowers from meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim) on the mucosal oxidative system of rats with experimental ulcers in vivo and by using biopsy material in vitro are evaluated in the experimental animals and patients suffering from gastroduodenal diseases. According to data (observations in vitro and in vivo) obtained from the experimental and clinical material, antioxidant effect of biologically active substances from the tinctures positively acting on the chains of oxidative system of damaged gastroduodenal mucosa was determined. These data support the possibility to use above-mentioned plant tinctures in the patients with gastroduodenal diseases.

This research evaluated the mutagenicity and anti-mutagenicity of oil and tincture of H. annuus L. seeds using the micronucleus assay in bone marrow of mice. The interaction between these preparations and the genotoxic effects of doxorubicin (DOX) was also analyzed. Experimental groups were evaluated after 24-48 h of treatment with N-Nitroso-N-ethylurea (NEU) and DOX (positive controls), NaCl (a negative control), a sunflower tincture (250-2,000 mg.Kg-1 of THALS) and two sources of sunflower oils (250-2,000 mg.Kg-1 of POHALS and FOHALS). Anti-mutagenic assays were carried out using the sunflower tincture and oils separately and in combination with these controls. The frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs) was significantly different (p  0.05) between (i) the positive and negative control treatments, (ii) the positive controls and animals treated with THALS and (iii) animals treated with THALS and and THALS combined with the positive controls. However, a slight genotoxicity was observed in the animals treated with the combination of THALS+DOX. Both sources of oils (FOHALS and POHALS) revealed similar results; in these groups, the frequencies of MNPCEs were similar to those observed in negative controls. Statistically significant differences were also observed between the sunflower oil treatments and their associated positive controls. There was no genotoxicity (clastogenicity/aneugenicity) observed in THALS, POHALS and FOHALS regardless of the dose, time (except FOHALS) and gender of mouse (except POHALS and FOHALS). The moderate anti-genotoxic effects of THALS suggest a potential slight protective mechanism against DOX-induced genotoxic effects.
