Nesse sentido esta pesquisa, por meio de uma abordagem qualitativa, analisa o caso do turismo no espaço rural no município de São Martinho, localizado no Estado de Santa Catarina, no Sul do Brasil. Foram entrevistadas pessoas de quatro categorias, agrupadas de acordo com seu envolvimento com a atividade turística. Não se verificou diferença significativa na visão dos moradores envolvidos e não envolvidos com relação aos efeitos do turismo no espaço rural no município. O turismo no espaço rural, mesmo com sua capacidade de gerar diversos efeitos positivos na economia local, não leva ao desenvolvimento e, mesmo em termos de crescimento econômico, seu reflexo é muitas vezes pequeno, dependendo do nível espacial que se analisa. Mesmo com todo o sucesso alcançado por São Martinho nesta atividade, a grande maioria dos moradores não participantes não sentiu nenhum tipo de melhora no seu nível de vida em decorrência do turismo. No entanto, o turismo no espaço rural tem uma função muito importante, pois consegue mobilizar alguns recursos e principalmente despertar capacidades humanas que estavam latentes e mesmo subutilizadas. Considerando que crescimento não é a mesma coisa que desenvolvimento, o turismo no espaço rural pode vir a ser importante para o crescimento econômico, mas sozinho não reúne condições de promover o desenvolvimento do local onde é realizado. Assim, na busca por uma situação real de desenvolvimento do espaço rural local, deve, necessariamente, ser incluído numa política de desenvolvimento que envolva a agropecuária e outras atividades agroindustriais. / This thesis aims to analyze the effects of tourism in the rural space. More specifically, it intends to analyze if such activity either provides development for the place that starts to have visitors flow or if it is only reflected in the growth of local economy. Thus, through a qualitative approach, this research analyzes tourism in the rural space of São Martinho a town located in Santa Catarina State in the Brazilian Southern. People from four categories and grouped according to their involvement with touristic activities were interviewed. In the view of both the involved and not involved residents, there was not significant difference concerning the effects of tourism in the rural space of São Martinho. The tourism alone in the rural space does not lead to development even with its capacity to generate several positive effects in the local economy. Besides, even in terms of economical growth, many times its results are small depending on the space level that is analyzed. Even with the great success reached by São Martinho in this activity, a great majority of not participant residents did not feel any kind of improvement in their quality of life as a result of this activity, although tourism in the rural space has a very important role because it is able to mobilize some resources and mainly to arouse human capacities that were latent and even subutilised. Considering that growth is not the same as development, tourism in the rural space may become very important to the economical growth, but alone it does not combine conditions to promote development of the place where it is carried out. Therefore, when searching for a real situation of development of the local rural space it must be necessarily included in a policy of development that involves farming and other agro-industrial activities.

Este estudo realizado com base em fontes primárias e secundárias está embasado no trabalho de campo que consiste em entrevistas e observações in loco. Consiste em analisar as Fazendas Imperiais no Vale do Paraíba Fluminense para a implementação da atividade turística. Trata do elemento histórico e da cultura material como valor capaz de alavancar o turismo, tendo como sustentáculo a história cotidiana da região do Vale do Café, no período da cafeicultura durante o século XIX. Revela resultados abrangentes para a consolidação de um novo pólo turístico regional tendo as fazendas imperiais como fator motivador da destinação. / This study done with basis on primary and secondary sources is based on the fieldwork that consists on interviews and observations in loco. It consists on analyzing the Imperial Farms in the Vale do Paraíba in Rio de Janeiro in order for the implementation of tourist activity. It is about the historical element and the material culture with value enough to promote tourism, having as basis the daily life story of the Vale do Café region, in the period of coffee growing during the 19th century. It reveals inclusive results for the consolidation of a new tourist regional pole having the imperial farms as a motivating factor of the destination.
