The political economy of public-private partnerships : forestry co-management in northwest SaskatchewanOrb, Jocelyn D 30 April 2008
This thesis examines the political economy of public-private partnerships (PPPs), specifically how power has been shared among the partners involved in the co-management of forestry lands in Northwest Saskatchewan. It uncovers the political agendas of the groups involved, how decisions have been made and costs/benefits been shared, and considers the implications this model of co-management has for the future of forestry in this province.
This study reveals a complex partnership in which power is not being shared equally. A private corporation, Mistik Management Ltd., possesses power over production, knowledge and credit. It purports to be working together with stakeholders in the co-management of forestry lands in Northwest Saskatchewan, but in truth Mistik is managing this resource with minimal input from forest users and residents in the region. The company does, however, appear sincere in its consultation process with stakeholders and is trying to improve the level of their engagement in day to day forestry operations. In addition, and despite this deficiency in stakeholder engagement, Mistik is practicing what is arguably the most environmentally sustainable forestry management in the province.

Culture is dynamic and capable of adapting to new conditions. Practices that are useful and harmless should be made available to those who need them. Many people believe the transmission of the indigenous knowledge will strengthen their cultural life. Attention should be given to the ways of preserving the knowledge. Some elders believe in their knowledge and prefer to see it being protected. Indigenous languages should be developed to become the media of instruction. After talking to people in communities, the researcher understands how important the knowledge is to them. They give attention to the mainstreaming of the knowledge. Some people believe culture molds their lives.Their beliefs about the past are more important than the actual sequence of events. Many believe traditional values emphasising mutual influences beteen various aspects of communities are combined with western beliefs, that place a high value on individuality and independence. Researchers believe each generation grow up in a mass of tradition and pass through. As they grow they learn different cultures, but only need guidance in learning them. Beyond Community: "Global" Conservation Networks and "Local" Organization in Tanzania and ZanzibarDean, Erin January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation explores the complex structures and diverse experiences of globalization through the specific analytical lens of community-based natural resource management (CBNRM). CBNRM is an undertaking which is fundamentally local but also integrally connected to transnational conservation ideology and national structures of authority. While recent critiques of community-based conservation projects have challenged the universal efficacy of the approach, CBNRM continues to be a ubiquitous conservation paradigm and to provide lingering hope for local empowerment through resource management. Focusing on two community-based conservation groups formed in Tanzania and Zanzibar, this dissertation looks at the experience of local groups attempting to engage with broader national or international conservation networks by focusing on three tropes of globalization theory: intersections between traditional ecological knowledge and western science, the relationship between civil society and the state, and the specific mechanisms for local engagement with national and global entities. The community groups in this study use dynamic and adaptive strategies to channel resources into their communities. However, they also face significant structural constraints, many of which reveal the neocolonial effects of transnational conservation ideology. This work explores both the factors limiting or manipulating local participation in resource management and the strategies used by these two community-based conservation groups to ensure their participation in spite of those limitations.

The Integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in Science Curriculum in Canada: Content Analysis of Grades 7 and 8 Official Curriculum DocumentsKim, Eun-Ji Amy 20 June 2012 (has links)
While Western science education has always been ubiquitous in the Canadian educational system and society, many researchers have recognized the scientific and educational values of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). This study aims to contribute to the understanding of TEK and the integration of TEK into science curricula. The prevalence and representation of TEK in grades 7 and 8 official science curriculum documents used in Canada were examined. To describe TEK in the documents, both quantitative and qualitative content analyses were conducted. The results show the high variation of the prevalence and representations of TEK. Overall, Nunavut and Saskatchewan show the highest prevalence and representation of TEK in their curriculum documents, which could establish a benchmark for developing a national learning framework for integrating TEK.
