Estimating Pedestrian Impact on Coordination of Urban CorridorsUnknown Date (has links)
At most of the US signal, pedestrian walk timings run in concurrence with relevant
vehicular traffic signal phases which means that major-street coordinated operations can
be interrupted by a pedestrian call. Such interruption may increase delays and stops for
major traffic flows. An alternative to this design is to increase the cycle length and embed
pedestrian timings within the ring-barrier structure of the prevailing coordination plan.
Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. This study attempts a novel approach
to address this situation by a comprehensive experimental evaluation of traffic performance
under various pedestrian signal timing strategies. Findings show that either
abovementioned approach works well for very low traffic demands. When the traffic
demand increases findings cannot be generalized as they differ for major coordinated
movements versus overall network performance. While coordinated movements prefer no
interruption of the coordinated operations, the overall network performance is better in the

Understanding Multi-State, Stakeholder Directed, Corridor Coalition Building: An Interstate-81 Case StudyOrr, Glenn Lydell 30 April 2014 (has links)
Corridor coalitions have been described by some as a model for the development of public-private partnerships to help finance and manage corridor wide traffic flow programs and construction projects (Vega & Penn, 2008). Others have suggested corridor coalitions could also be effective tools for the development of strategic growth planning in mega regions and possibly as part of a national infrastructure and economic growth strategy (Todorovich, 2009). Through a case study of the Interstate 81 Corridor Coalition, this dissertation describes the coalition’s characteristics, analyzes its evolutionary development and explores governance participation possibilities. This study based on data from a mixed methods research approach provides a framework for assessing conceptual characteristics, a responsiveness continuum for understanding contextual dynamics and a governance model of components for evaluating collaborations. The evidence suggests some planning, funding and coordination difficulties associated with the absence of governance entities with corridor wide authority are being addressed by various national transportation institutions and associations. Corridor coalitions that exhibit developmental characteristics such as competency, sustainability, diversity and commitments consistent with relevant public agencies may be appropriate for roles in governance. Likewise, the responsiveness of corridor coalitions to governance related contextual developments may be a primary determinant of their possible role in governance. This I-81 case study provides evidence of an evolving coalition, where the descriptive characteristics contribute to a type of responsiveness to corridor concerns that could lead to governance participation. / Ph. The diploma thesis discusses the issues of help mainly by the United States under the Lend- Lease Act during the Second World War. The theoretical part deals with the historical context and the economic s and political framework of the rise of the programme with an emphasis on the USA. The following part is focused on the quantification of the whole extent. A great part of the thesis is devoted to the issues of help by the Soviet Union. The emphasis is placed not only on the content, but mainly on the logistic issues. Following the historical context there are also four major transportation corridors discussed and their occupancy at the time, material flow and mode of transport are analysed.

Identification and Characterization of Fine Particulate Matter Hot Spots on an Urban Arterial Corridor Integrating Probe Vehicle, Traffic and Land Use DataBell, Katherine Eleanor 13 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the use of integrated probe vehicle, traffic and land use data to identify and characterize fine particulate matter (PM[subscript 2.5]) hot spot locations on urban arterial corridors. In addition, a preliminary analysis is conducted to consider volatile organic compound (VOC) hot spot locations. A pollutant hot spot is defined as a location on a corridor in which the mean pollutant concentrations are consistently above the 85th percentile of pollutant concentrations when compared to all locations along the corridor. In order to collect data for this study, an electric vehicle was equipped with instruments designed to measure PM[subscript 2.5] and total VOC (TVOC) concentrations. Second-by-second measurements were performed for each pollutant from both the right and left sides of the vehicle. Detailed meteorological, traffic and land use data is also available for this research. The results of a statistical analysis, including multiple regression, are used to better understand which data sources are most valuable in estimating PM[subscript 2.5] hot spot locations consistent with empirical data; knowledge is gained as to which variables have the strongest statistical relationships with traffic emissions and pollutant levels at a corridor level. A preliminary analysis is also completed to consider which variables are statistically related to TVOC hot spot locations. This research highlights the importance of considering both consistency and magnitude of pollutant concentrations when identifying hot spot locations. An objective of this research is to develop a method to identify urban arterial hot spot locations that provides a balance of efficiency (in terms of capital expenses, time, resources, expertise requirements, etc.) and accuracy.
